HP pad instead of Ipad

You can't hear the bugle playing?
so I had to swipe my finger up to minimize the card with the gtam browser in, I just typed bugle on the screen without having to open another search browser like google and gave me the option to open Wikipedia where I found the meaning of what a bugle is in about 3 sec. Then I swiped my finger up again and touched the gtam card which was still open to maximize it and I am typing this now.I love webOS :-)

if you don't know what I'm talking about ....get webOS

Just a note: Apple is pushing for HTML5 (not quicktime) which is a web standard and not at all proprietary like Adobe's Flash. Flash is already fizzling away from most major media websites, and video sites like YouTube are all converting to H.264/HTML5. This is the way the internet is headed- Apple, IMO, is just doing their part to speed up the process. Flash sucks.

/carry on

Flash, HTML 5, whatever. I'm just glad to have a full view of web pages.

ZX, do you know how to get SSH tunneling going?
I've tried installing OpenSSH but I don't understand the setup. All of this linux crap.
I've managed to install the SDL Terminal app manually but it doesn't run.

It's too bad that the WebOS platform hasn't matured for the Touchpad.
SSH on other platforms is so much easier/non-technical.

no commenting on the crash from that app, its beta 1, currently beta 6 right now.

lol like swiping left on any iOS device and typing in a search? I just did what you did on my iPhone and it returns a web search option as well as wiki lookup. If my search was a name it would also show local results on the phone like sms messages, contacts, emails, etc etc.

This has been in iOS for as long as I've had it.

start reading books ...

the cookbooks, programmers guide and bibles are usually the best source of technical information

I woud also suggest completing at least an undergrad degree in comp sci as it will teach you the fundamentals of computer science, not that there are no self-taught developers, but in all honestly, knowing how to hack together a php script is really bottom-feeding in the comp sci world.

Unfortunately college or university isn't an option for me. I could only pursue this as a personal project until such time as I created an app which might be useful and stable enough to release. I have an absolutely brilliant idea for an app which would be useful for any of the major 3 smartphone O/S. However giving up my day job to pursue something I may or may not be good at isn't in the cards.

Thank you for the recommendations, I'm going to see what reading material I can get my hands on.

I am glad that ios5 can finally do what the first webOS version did a couple of years ago. Not bashing, just goes to show

is it just me or the video above seems like some OS from a couple of years ago? It must be an old version of the ipad

now lets see a modern OS

oh my if we could find a device that did all this and only cost $100....wait a minute :-)

the video i found there was iOS 5 beta 1, its actually been around a bit now, only mac users had access to it by using Xcode 4.0(not jailbroken).
apple is fully integrating it in iOS 5(this fall), but might only be available for iPads.

i have it on my jailbroken iphone 4 too.

I continuously see the webOs videos and I honestly don't see the big deal. Everything WebOs does iOS does, so where is this vast superiority?

Lisa, I suggest reading the latest articles about the future of webos,it will be licensed, how is that dead tech?

For a guy who started this whole thread referring to Apple buyers as "cool-aid drinkers", you are really going out of your way to show willful blindness on this issue. HP has abandoned development of the product. They are practically giving them away so they can get rid of their inventory. They haven't even announced who this new licensee is, probably because they don't have one yet. And maybe never will. The most likely outcome is that people will use this discounted hardware to run Android.

And yet you continue to extol the virtues of the brilliant future that WebOS is going to have? Let it go, man. HP has, and they had a lot more invested in it than you.

But, but, but...... iOS sucks man!

Lol

Its a very slick looking UI and for me would be the only option after an iPad. Android feels beta to me right now, WebOS feels well thought out and put together. If I can find one, I will definitely buy one for $100 if I can find one.

I would not say its superior to iOS, but it does look to be a good solid tablet with a solid OS that looks refined and completed, not a work in progress.

Oh I agree that it does look very polished, but aside from that I really don't see the massive advantages the OP keeps talking about

The only advantage I see now is the cheap price point. I would not pay full price for the device, its just not worth it when comparing to an iPad in my opinion. But at the $100 level, its a very nice device for the price point.
