HP pad instead of Ipad

dang, I totally missed out.. at $100/150, thats a great buy. Even if WebOS isn't so popular, who cares the unit is still great for media and surfing. Perfect for travel too as its not that expensive and I wouldn't be crying if it got stolen.

dam shame, such amazing operating system killed by a bunch of monkeys, and by consumers that don't have the knowledge.

anyone should grab one, cheaper than a kendle...... "face palm"

shoe post your impression about it. I can show you how to ramp the speed to 1.5 and get homebrew free apps

Followed your posts and went to Precentral and installed the homebrew thing and that opened up the door to unofficial/free apps. Thanks.

Keep in mind, I have never used a tablet device until now (not even played with the store demos) and aside from playing Angry Birds and a few other games, I've never really used an iPhone before.

My impression of the device is this: For $150... GREAT STUFF but I wouldn't pay full price for this device.
Nice interface but it takes some getting used to - I still have "Windows" ingrained into my head and I'm not used to the advanced gestures yet.

The WebOS integration with popular online systems - Yahoo mail, Gmail and Facebook, Dropbox etc... Made it easy to set up my accounts and get up and going pretty quick.

The availability of 1/2 decent apps is pretty good but of course, Apple/Android has more due to their popularity.

Drawbacks:

User documentation for the device is pretty slim. I still haven't figured out how to calibrate the touch screen but i'll get around to that eventually.
Fortunately Precentral has some FAQs and threads for newbs available. It looks like they're responding to the influx of total newbs like myself that just got in on the fire sale so that looks promising in terms of support.

Bluetooth connectivity but again, this could be a documentation/I don't know what I'm doing issue but I've paired/used many different peripherals with many different devices over the years and it's all more or less a standardized method.

I managed to connect a BT keyboard to the device and it works find. No problem.
The issue comes from trying to connect my phone to share data (tether) or my laptop/phone to transfer files.

I can connect to my devices but the Touch Pad seems to think that they're headset devices. I believe this may be because the TouchPad was designed to connect to other Palm/WebOS devices with the touchstone method anyway I can't transfer files to/from the device wirelessly. This leads me to another issue...

File Management: There doesn't appear to be any kind of "Explorer" or file management shell that comes stock. I've seen a few on the app store (or whatever they call it) but I haven't bothered to install them yet as file management hasn't become a critical issue for me yet. You can connect the TP to a computer with the enclosed USB /charging cable and it will show up as removable storage (like a flash drive) but I haven't done it yet so I haven't even seen the directory structure - at this point, I'm mainly interested in wireless connections.

I have entered my Dropbox login into the Accounts area but I have yet to see any of my files or even a Dropbox app. I'll need to explore more.

Camera:
There is only a 1.3 mpxl front facing camera for "video calls" - well the standard app for that is Skype.
Internet calls/chats are free on Skype so it's not a big deal except that there's no real vid support for other "popular" systems such as MSN or Yahoo.

The worst thing about the camera is that there's no native app to even USE it! Sure it's a front facing so you'll be basically taking self portraits or whatever but hey.. the hardware is there! It's almost ridiculous that they didn't put an app in to even access it!
I found a 3rd party app that does the job. Nothing fancy (free app) but it at least allows me to make use of the camera, should the need arise.

Browser:
The browser is okay. Fine enough to get around while on the go but is by no means a replacement for a full fledged browser.

It does the job. I can get around the web and use Facebook etc... but I miss the "tweaks" and addons that a browser such as Firefox or Opera offers. SSH is available through the Preware store/OpenSSH but I haven't been able to get it to work - I think some hacking is required but I haven't had the time to get around to it.

It CAN render Flash which is a BIG plus over Apple and their stubborn reluctance to push Quicktime down everyone's throats.
On the weekend, I had asked my friend to check the weather radar for me - I prefer Intellicast personally and although there "is an app for that", I didn't want to ask my friend to install it JUST so I could check the radar that one time.
So I used the browser and went to the Intellicast website and guess what? iPhone fail...

Apps:
The app selection for this device is a little slim, I think this is owing to the fact that it's been on the market for less than 2 months before the plug was pulled. There "many" apps available as the device can run WebOS software designed for the Palm Pre and other WebOS phones but those app show up in the middle of the tablet on the image of a cellular phone emulation. Sure I can use the app but it doesn't make maximum use of the screen real estate available. Hopefully the devs out there will continue to create HD apps for the TouchPad.

Keep in mind that these are my impressions and i've only been puttering around with this for the weekend/have had no prior experience with WebOS or tablets so a lot of my issues most likely have solutions to them, I just haven't found them yet.

As I've said though, this is a GREAT device for what I paid. It's small and light with good battery life (spec wise, I haven't tested it myself).
This is a device I could tote around easily and being solid state, I don't have to worry about vibrations on the bike.

You forgot to mention its the device of choice for TAFB

Its a shame this is going under. I played with some android tablets at a staples, and was amazed at how clunky, ugly and beta they felt. The WebOS looked great and felt like a polished product. Now this is from a short time of just glancing and light exploring of these different tablets. The android tablets came no where near to feeling as complete as an iPad. The only one I would have looked at outside of my iPad would have been a WebOS tablet.

Going to try and hit a local staples and bestbuy and see what deals they have on these still, if they are around. For $100 I think its worth it.

Nah.. I got the 32gb model. If there were 16's in stock when I bought, I'd have grabbed more than 1.

Good luck with the hunt. I went out on Saturday morning to look for more AFTER I had got mine and ALL stores were out of stock.
Been kicking myself in the *** because I could have grabbed 4 more on Friday night but I didn't think ahead. I didn't think people would be lining up for these things!

Just a note: Apple is pushing for HTML5 (not quicktime) which is a web standard and not at all proprietary like Adobe's Flash. Flash is already fizzling away from most major media websites, and video sites like YouTube are all converting to H.264/HTML5. This is the way the internet is headed- Apple, IMO, is just doing their part to speed up the process. Flash sucks.

/carry on

Maybe HP will eventually catch up to Apple's sales after all! Congrats?

As for the Kool-aid thing, I hate the use of this reference. "Drinking the Kool-Aid" refers to people who have joined a cult, and will drink anything they're given, blindly, to their detriment. It's a reference to the Jim Jones cult mass-suicide in Guyana.

The reference is used to put down "fanbois" (another stupid expression), but it really isn't correct. People who buy Apple products aren't harming themselves by buying into the brand. They are quite happy with the products they get, they work as advertised, and there is no adverse consequence to them. Have they paid too much money? Maybe, maybe not.

Now, if someone goes out and buys an unsupported product that has been discontinued by its manufacturer, I'd say that is closer to "drinking the Kool-Aid". Those folks will end up with a product that no longer receives updates or new software, and will become obsolete more quickly. Not to mention a complete lack of remedy if there are any product failure issues.

Regardless, if you're going to use the Kool-Aid line, please figure out what it means and use it properly.

And buy whatever tablet makes you happy. If you're defining your identity by the products you purchase, you are probably a loser. Buying one product or another can't possibly make you anti-establishment, alternative, or cool. It just makes you a member of a particular consumer market segment.

What do you think of the zbar lib sdk?

i'm an apple developer (ios) I have ios5beta6 on my iphone 4 right now and I'll be the first to admit that apple's products are not only inferior to android by a metric mile, but that 99% of apple's users are blind sheep who couldn't think their way out of a wet cardboard iphone case.

:)

Sounds like you're due for a career change.

I wish I knew what that meant. With all of the excitement and anticipation of the coming generations of tablets I'm lending consideration to trying to learn how to develop for the Android OS. Anyone here have advice on where to start with this? I don't have any programing experience other than extremely basic HTML from the late 90's.

All of the hating on flash vs. HTML5 and Apple vs. Android/Google is pointless. What matters is the competition. If it wasn't for another company or individual looking at what the other guy is doing and saying "I can do that too and make it better" then we would only have the iPad. Personally Apple products are not where I'm headed but that is because I don't like where they seem to be taking their products. For people with simplistic needs or who don't care about how Apple is plans the future of their development and or they just like Apple; then to each their own.

My first smartphone was an iPhone 3G. When I first got it I was very excited and thought it was the sweetest piece of phone technology ever invented. But eventually it started to develop reliability issues and even though it is still functional I now use it as a paperweight until I can find a worthy individual to bestow it upon or maybe use it for app development. Now I have a Samsung Droid phone and I love it even more than when I got the iPhone.

What it really comes down to is what product is right for the person and their needs. The HTML vs. flash can just be left up to the web development geeks because it doesn't have a major impact most of the time for average users. Heck, even tonight my buddy and I were discussing how some websites just aren't geared for mobile browsers regardless of the software platform.

In some respects it is unfortunate that HP decided to murdercide the tablets but we as consumers benefit greatly from it, just look at what it has done to the tablet market. People who went to the stores to by the Touchpad only to find they were sold out still bought other tablets because at that point they had just decided they want a tablet. That speaks volumes to me about how little the importance is to many people about Android vs. Apple and HTML vs. flash

What app do you have for the camera? So far that's my only complaint like really no stock camera functions lol what a waste!

oh and ios 5 is ok, its pretty cool that features I've had for 5+ years now are finally making it to the iphone, its really hugely funny how apple sheepfanbois think notifications are new, or info on your lockscreen, or "the cloud" remote storage are new.

Sometimes i just want to slap the f--- out of an apple sheep but it wouldn't help beat any sense into one :(

its pretty cool that those features you had 5+ years now are finally making it to the iphone, and notifications and lockscreen info and a cloud.
those features will be new to a lot of people, that will be downloading it on the first day and be happy.

you call yourself an iOS developer, what did you develop, a developers account to have early access to iOS 5 Beta.
even if you are, why did you choose iOS and when?

multi-million dollar client uses ipads thats all i can tell you bud

:)
