HP pad instead of Ipad

man I have been thinking that for 2 days now but that would have been a move that cost HP valuable shares and I am not sure they would wanna risk it, but the end result is a bunch of brand new people using webOS and realizing how good it is that otherwise would have got an iPad.

I don't care if HP loses as long as somehow webOS persists
It's just wishful thinking. If it was a stunt, they would of dropped the price to 250, so to still make money, but selling for 99 seems desperation to recoup some loses. I think HP's days as a company may be limited.

Check how many news items there are because of the pricepoint. This is all free publicity for HP kind of like when Wii's first came along and everyone wanted one. I mean..I want one now dammit and I didn't even know about it a while ago. There wouldn't have been the frenzy at $250. I'm hoping there's a restock.

so to clarify, this is coming from the head of the global business at HP on an interview with engaged "all we announced yesterday is that we are not making the tablet anymore". Webos is still the center of their future plans.
This is very interesting, at 100 bucks anyone that doesn't get one is wasting an opportunity...if you find it. Lol iPad not the only product with lineups ;-)

by the way...written on my HP pad

I really wanted one of these. Actually wanted two, since I wanted one for myself. But I was hoping to get one for a friend who has mobility issues. It would be fantastic for him. I was hoping to set it up for him so that he could use it in his room while he watched TV, to check sports scores, horse race results and betting. Also could be a good tool to keep his mind engaged. Maybe I'll score one later somehow.

I picked up a 32gb model yesterday morning, all of the 16gb models were sold. I had to check a few stores in town and bought one of the two remaining ones they had at Staples. The only reason we had not already bought an iPad was price. We just could not justify the cost of an iPad so when these tablets went on sale for $99.00 and $149.00, how could we resist. I use a Mac, so I am quite familiar with their operating system and this one will take a little getting used to. We were happily surprised by the number of apps available and plan to use the HP to surf the net and check email when travelling.

*fingers crossed*

Is HP going to deeply discount their desktop systems as well since they say they will be exiting the PC business?

My Dell is due for replacement and I'd jump at one of their awesome and ravely reviewed for years all-in-one systems in a heartbeat.

go to precentral.com and do a search for homebrew, once you open the developer mode and install preware you will enter the world of patches and thousands more of homebrew apps.

Just an FYI - The model advertised @ $99 is discontinued.

HP is not going anywhere. The retailers wanted to push it off the shelves ASAP + its a marketing move to draw in the masses to the stores in order to have people walk out with more. IIRC Canadian Tire did this many years ago with lawnmowers and it was a very successful campaign. People walked out with a lot more than just the lawn mowers.

Don't hold your breath, that decision is yet to be made. Don't get me wrong, I'd love the chance to score some deals too. However from what I recall IBM did not offer massive discounts when they sold their PC devision to Lenovo. Instead they just sold off whatever remaining stock existed and ramped up production of the new Lenovo products to meet demand.

"The company said its board of directors has authorized executives to explore "strategic alternatives" for its Personal Systems unit, including a full or partial spin-off or sale. HP said it plans on making a final decision on the division within the next 12 to 18 months In addition to PCs, that unit also makes some other consumer devices like mobile phones.

Anyone who owns an HP Touchpad or has one on order isn't as screwed as it appears. Android developers have already publicly announced their intentions to port the Android OS to the Touchpad. When that happens it will mean all of the advantages and offerings of the Android community and platform will be bestowed upon Touchpad owners.

"There’s now a project page for TouchDroid at the RootzWiki forum. A team of skilled Android developers plan to first try to get a version of Android based on the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) up and running on the HP TouchPad. If that works, the next step is to port CyanogenMod."

Until the Android port happens the existing WebOS will be sufficient for surfing the interwebs and all of the usual day to day stuff. Its not like the Touchpad got terrible reviews.

the HP pad is a Ferrari engine inside a Honda civic chase, if you put android on it, is like taking that engine and putting an acura engine inside a Honda civic chase.

Are you saying you expect it to be slow? The specs aren't too dissimilar from that of the Galaxy Tab.

Plus the Droid developers who release the modified or hacked versions of the OS often put emphasis on keeping things speedy and bloat free. How much power do people really need to surf the web, play music and watch some YouBoob videos?

Tablets shouldn't be treated like PC's because they aren't computers. Instead they are semi-proprietary hardware and software platforms which allow for users to access resources with the convenience of mobility. Perhaps in the line between notebooks and tablets will be blurred, but we're still a few generations away from that.

I ordered a Touchpad today, when the devs put out the Touchdroid OS I'll be unleashing it on my tablet.

Update:

For those of you who ordered directly from HP's website here's what I can tell you as I just spent an 70+ minutes waiting on hold.

The rep I spoke with said late Fri. night or early Sat. AM HP ran out of stock. They cannot tell you specifically if your order will be shipped, the only thing you can do is wait to see if you get a cancellation or shipment notice via e-mail. Also, if you clicked on the price and it said $150 but at the checkout it went to $499, the price will be adjusted automatically if you are lucky enough to get it shipped. So you're welcome for saving you an hour of your time to find out this info.

What do you think of the zbar lib sdk?

i'm an apple developer (ios) I have ios5beta6 on my iphone 4 right now and I'll be the first to admit that apple's products are not only inferior to android by a metric mile, but that 99% of apple's users are blind sheep who couldn't think their way out of a wet cardboard iphone case.

:)

what you don't know, you shouldn't talk about.

i'm an iPad Guru, and i don't mean i know about a lot of apps.
The info i know about iPad surpasses everyone combined on GTAM, so don't test me, PLEASE!!!!

i have both iPad's(which means nothing, just saying), i chose to buy the second, because its that good.

Please explore the possibilities and what it is capable of right now, before passing judgement on the iPad.

And be ready for an Ipad 3, cause you will see one.

When iOS 5 is available this Fall, people are gonna go Bonkers.

Sales are gonna go thru the roof, remember i said that!!!!!!

iCloud!!!!!

more, more, more....Etc, Etc, Etc.....

oh and ios 5 is ok, its pretty cool that features I've had for 5+ years now are finally making it to the iphone, its really hugely funny how apple sheepfanbois think notifications are new, or info on your lockscreen, or "the cloud" remote storage are new.

Sometimes i just want to slap the f--- out of an apple sheep but it wouldn't help beat any sense into one :(
