How to get M1 license without knowing any English?!?

I thought about getting an ministry approved translator/interpreter but they cost like $100 just for them to translate the whole test... Which my dad isn't willing to pay.

Thanks

When I wrote my m1 there was a Persian guy who had troubles writing the test because his English was bad. His gf was talking to the drivetest worker saying he's not very good at English. The drivetest dude offered to sit down with the GF and him to write the test. I thought it was a wonderful gesture. The gentleman at the drivetest center was doing above and beyond his normal duties.

I don't imagine any other drivetest worker would go out of their way to do that. However, in all honesty. The questions are pretty much word for word out of the hand book. I'm pretty sure your dad is smart enough to memorize the questions and answers in order to pass!

btw sushii is very oishii!!:)

If you're going to ride in a Canadian vehicular environment that uses English as it's primary communication tool, then that's the way it is and should be.

If you cannot do the test, then you cannot ride. Plain and simple.

I'd feel even more uncomfortable than I already am knowing someone's driving out there who cannot read the signs and directions posted on the street.
Even though, to be objective, a part of the blame is ours for using non-standard signs. We decided to follow the Yanks instead of the rest of the world. Our signeage, the way it is, should follow the dinosaurs and the Imperial system as far as I'm concerned.

You should probably look at this whole scenario from a long term perspective. First of all the M2 course is delivered in English therefore your dad woud probably need to know some form of English. Second, what happens when it's time to take the M2 exit to get his M? That again requires comprehension of the english lanuage as the test instructions are delivered to the rider in english.

Hes perfectly fine with the road signs. He had his G license for over 10 years with no accidents and a couple parking tickets (on the street across from his house).

Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the G2 Exit taken in English? If he can pass that he can pass the M2 Exit.

Might as well try that XD worth a try right?

Yes Sushi is very very very oishii!! And Tempura!

I told him that but its like 40 questions. Quote a bit to memorize. Especially if your not very good at reading and writing.

Why would this or anything else be offered in another language or why would a translator be available? Are you going to have a translator ride around with you to read the signs for you aswell, no wonder why half the city drives like my 2 year old in her pedal car(actually she watches where she goes)

no wonder she read the signs to tell you what to do, since you are not reading the sign here, "write the test" not the road test....

I just kind of skimmed so some one may have posted this.

spending $400 on the rti course might be a waste of $$$ for your dad. they require two things. 1 that you are able to ride a bicycle and 2 that you speak fluent english. people have failed even though they were excellent riders because they didn't understand "stop in the box"

fork up the $ for a translator or get him english lessons.

Why is everyone assuming he understands no English at all... If you can keep a basic conversation going i'm sure you can understand STOP and BOX.

I disagree with the knowing fluent English part. From what i gathered in videos, the instructor shows you a diagram of the layout and just tells you go to around the pylons and do other tests ( i believe it was 8 different kinds of skills). Both visually and verbally. I'm not saying you don't need English at all just saying that FLUENT isn't needed.

Either pay the $100 or drill your father on the motorcyclist handbook and try and show him key words.

The M1 test is partially on the Motorcycle Handbook and partially on the Driver's Handbook which he can probably request that portion in his native language.

If he wants it that badly and isn't confident, I'd go for the translator.

When I wrote my M1 test, I schooled a ROOM full of people. I walked in, sat down and was finished in 10 minutes with double checking and focusing on questions I wasn't sure of.

I've been driving for many years - the people in the room I schooled?

Type 1: teenagers applying for the first time. Many things I knew from my years of experience.

Type 2: Immigrants (mainly women) who probably were applying for their first license as well as fighting the language barrier.

I was in, done the test, had it marked and out of there before ANYONE that was there before me left.

Don't let your father be a type 2. The people looked so stressed and confused. It was sad.

At the risk of being called a racist and outcast from society, I think people should learn either French or English before immigrating here.

Back in the day thats how it was. My grandfather immigratted from Germany. He had to take schooling to learn to speak and write english before he could even come here. Them he had to set up what we was going to do for profession. Than had to wait till he was done school 5 years(MECHAINICS) before my grandmother and mom could come over. Some diffrent now.

But better yet, take your dad, and every other NONE speaking english or french person and make them go to school as a pre req into getting into our country ( like they used to) If they fail they have one more try. If they fail again they have 3 days to leave. This is BS that we as a country have to hold peoples hands that want to come here, live on our land, drink our water, breathe our air and work our jobs but refuse to learn to read and write the langue of their new home. Australlia has it right when they said " do it out way or get the f u c k out"!

I never said my dad doesn't know any English :\. For the fourth? Fifth? time.. i'll say it again. He can keep a basic conversation going -_-''

Anyways this topic is dead.

Sushi - when you start a thread with the title stating "How to get M1 license without knowing any English" people tend to get the impression that your dad doesn't know any English.

I will assume that he has been living in Canada for the 10 years that he has had his G license. So how is this an issue? In 10 years here he cannot read a test well enough to understand it? really? C'mon!. Did he go out of his way not to become fluent?

Ignorance at its finest. This thread has nothing to do with immigration.

Unless you are aboriginal (native) I don't think you should be screaming "our land, our water, our air..." and "GTFO" comments. We are all immigrants. Canada, as a country, depends a lot on immigration. Atleast for population and economic growth.

I hate this place yet I keep coming back.

I've already posted a reply so I'm technically in but I'll say it anyway:
