How to get M1 license without knowing any English?!?

Read some of the post and it seems people have high expectations of immigrants. It's not as easy to pick up a language when you're a landed refugee fleeing a war torn country starting off with $0 and having to raise your kids and saving for their education.

Yes, but if that is your situation then you shouldn't really be concerned with a motorcycle, should you? A MetroPass costs less than insurance, let alone gas, maintenance, and such costs associated with being a biker. (Well, perhaps a bicyclist would be a better bet still...)

And I skipped a lot of this thread but in case it hasn't been clarified here's some info about immigration:

To become a landed permanent resident you don't need to know English or French. (And, for the record, you can get OHIP before you're even landed).

To become a citizen you must pass a short written test (that is ridiculously easy) in either French or English, but here's the kicker... if you fail you get a do-over where you go before a judge and he/she administers the test verbally...

I know all this become I've immigrated and gone through the entire process.

She read somewhere that $400 will guarantee you pass the exam and she's willing to pay that much just to pass the written exam. She taught me to ride my first bike so all she needs is to pass the written test and the rest will fall in place.

Wait so you say some ppl have high expectations of immigrants but yet she is willing (and you sound ok with) her paying $400 to circumvent the system so she can get an m1 (illegally)? How the hell did she get her G when she cant even pass her M1 (can she even read and understand road signs)? She is a danger on the road!

We need to go back to the old system of immigration and also stop allowing them to coming to major cities such as Toronto when they first come over. Go someplace less crowded where there isnt an already shortage of jobs, learn the language and dont try making such huge changes to our way of living. And before you get all pissy my father and his family are immigrants and they learned to live with how Canada was in a hurry.

I agree, GTA is a multi cultural society so i don't see why not to have ministry tests that don't require English to be in only English.

so what.. ?? There are two official languages in this country. Thats fine by me and I knew that when I moved here. This is CANADA and I have INTEGRATED. Thats the problem with fukwits in this city, they want everyone else to bend over for THEM.

If someone comes from somewhere else, part of living here is to Integrate to Canadian society and laws.

G1 is offered in many different languages, G2 is just simply turn left, turn right, and park instructions. G is the same. As i have said previously a majority of the signs are VISUAL, so language isn't a factor in determining what the signs mean.

Toronto is a multi cultural city, if we stop immigrants from landing in Toronto, Toronto will be vastly different. IMHO not for the good but for the bad.

G1 is really no different from an M1. If she knows how to ride a bike already as well as an understanding of the rules of the road she should be able to pass with out issue. The fact that they are willing to pay to bypass the system is just wrong.

Toronto is already culturally diverse. By over populating one region you are taking away jobs and putting a greater stress on the economy. Its time that immigrants are put where it isnt so densely populated and build other sectors.

Why do people immigrate though? I'm an immigrant and I came here because the way of life fitted with my expectations. Why would you come here at all if you don't intend to integrate with society?

I could move to Saudia Arabia and get a fantastic paying job with great benefits etc but the reason I don't is because the way of life there doesn't fit with how I want to live. I would have to integrate into a system that doesn't agree with me.

I worked and lived in France for 4 years or so, I learned french as it was the polite thing to do, I wanted to learn the language so I could better integrate.

Wow! Is this thread still alive?

Anyways he did the test with an interpretor and passed with flying colors.

Now lets see if he can pass the M1 Exit test at RTI. Hopefully i'm allowed to be there to explain what the instructor wants him to do.

I've talked a fair bit with an instructor from RTI, their two biggest requirements are 1) you can ride a bicycle 2) You can understand (both written and spoken) english... I've been told about a number of students who were great riders but failed because they didn't understand the directions. I don't believe you'll be allowed on the course due to liability reasons (I went to visit once and I couldn't step foot on the pavement). There are couples who are both in the course but sometimes both end up failing, 1 due to language and the other due to worrying more what the other person was doing... good way to spend $800?

Read up to page 11. But then gave up.

You said he's been riding since you were born.
meaning he should have a license from another country.

When you immigrate, can't you transfer your license?

Plus the written test is like.. $14-$15?
Just write it a bunch of times?
I'm sure he'll get it eventually.
Then you can spend >$100 and not feel as "ripped off"

I have the same situation with the dad, he wants to ride, as well as save me money on insurance. But does not speak fluent english well.

I already have a bike and deal with everything myself. But if its what HE wants and not what I (MYSELF) want, I'll be glad to help him find a solution.

What am i doing to solve the problem?
I'm taking time to help him go through the MTO issue handbook.
Page by page, word by word.
If you really want it, you'll be willing to sacrifice something, either it be time or money.

also, $100 is nothing. a G1 test costs $125.
Just pretend the M1 costs $114.50 or whatever.

So what'll it be? Time or money? You choose.

Why don't you teach your parent english, or take advantage of the many programs out there that aim to help immigrants learn english?

It's great that we are a country full of immigrants, but whose fault is it when they don't want to learn english?

Thats exactly what i did, went through all 90 questions in the MTO handbook and even took the liberty of translating it into Chinese (most of them were accurate), and then hired an interpretor.
Test has been done, also the G1 test is $125 because it includes the G2 road test.

I'm teaching him at home, but "immigrants" simply don't have the luxury of learning a new language due to two reasons.

1. Its hard to learn a new language when your old
2. No time

If you came here rich or your not the first generation then this doesn't apply.

I understand it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but no time? There is always time if you are willing to make it, especially for something that is important.

Learning the language of the country in which you intend to reside is not a luxury it should be a necessity and a requirement.

Why would this or anything else be offered in another language or why would a translator be available? Are you going to have a translator ride around with you to read the signs for you aswell, no wonder why half the city drives like my 2 year old in her pedal car(actually she watches where she goes)

Bingo!! Award Prize.

If he can't read the road signs I don't want him out there.

If you go to China, they speak Chinese.

If you go to Portugal they speak Portuguese.

If you to go Russia they speak Russia.

Why is it everytime someone comes to Canada they don't bother learning the language and wants everything to be available to them in some other non-official language?

so why aren't we speaking aboriginal language? like the Inuit or Metis people? they didnt cry like you saying how "immigrants (early english settlers)" should use their language coming to THEIR country.... your lack of intelligence and incorrect historical knowledge makes your argument invalid..... take example like China, does everyone NEED to speak Mandarin? nope, they have cantonese, haka, shanghainese etc etc... get your facts straight before you make what you consider as a "intelligent yet obvious comment".

To answer your first question, because we had guns.

What was THEIR country? Nothing, because they didn't have one.
