Holiday destinations

We have done 12 cruise ship cruises and if you count charters and small boat we are over 30 . We like it .
I get horribly seasick and only once on a cruise ship and even that was treated in 1 day with gravol. Most have state of the art gyro controlled stabilization. They sit pretty flat . We like waking up on a different island or in a different city harbour. We day trip off the ship every day , snorkeling, diving , visit a new beach , see some ruins , tour a cathedral, visit a volcano or see the what’s left of Pompeii. Or just walk through town. We don’t buffet much except breakfast ( because it’s fast) and both enjoy sitting down in the evening for a nice formal meal in the dining room. Every ship we have been on features floor shows at night , a casino if that’s your thing , one has a theatre showing new release movies . And multiple bars that usually have some sort of entertainment. Or you can take a beer , sit on the upper deck ( usually all alone ) and watch the stars , look over the horizon for other ships , or just dream.
Just never take a Carnival ship as your first because it’s a cheap introduction, yes they are cheap for a reason and you get what you pay for .

All this talk and now trying to convince partner to take her dream cruise
She can afford one fare but not two and I'm not agile enough to get the most of the shore expeditions. $50k a pop....

So now of course we both have the bug to do something..
I'm thinking Hurtigruten - she can fly business class via Dubai and I can go cheap seats to Canada, visit dottor then on to Norway and meet up there.

In related news....try cruising. Amazing bang for the buck, you can do as much or as little as you can possibly want or desire every day of the trip, it's a giant floating resort that takes you to other resort cities so you can see and experience different cities and cultures as part of your trip instead of just one, and with few exceptions, there's remarkably few problems on cruises unless you're doing the 2-3 nighter booze cruises on Carnival or something.

People who **** around on cruise ships find out in a hurry that their cruise just came to an end, problem solved.
Is it really? Squeeze and I have never done a cruise. We don't like crowds. Years ago we went to Greece and were in Santorini on a rented scooter when the cruise ships pulled in. All of a sudden I was manuevering through giant crowds of ship tours. We quickly skeedaddled off to the topless and nude beaches I'd looked up before we left.

That single moment has come to be how we define a cruise.

Also we're not foodies. Everyone talks up how great the food is on a cruise but that's so wasted on us. I don't want to go on a vacation just to home 5lbs heavier.

If you're not a foodie or a fan of crowds does a cruise still make sense?

Short answer , yes . I’ve never come home from a cruise heavier , I eat great food, but grazing the buffet because it’s there isn’t me . Sometimes there can be crowds , sometimes lots . You can skip that problem by picking a better boat and different cruise . We did east side of Italy on a 180 person boat. Did Tahiti and BoraBora on a boat with 6 people . We will do Granada in the fall 8 people max . It can be done , it just costs a bit more .

Doesn’t make sense to me for similar reasons. Crowds are a dealbreaker…I rent houses that are intentionally isolated or have big gardens if I can. Last place I basically had the beach to myself every day. Absolute heaven. Another place was on some trails that went for miles and I wouldn’t see more than three or four people all day with gardens full of sloths and other wildlife.

Food is what the locals eat in many places. I get to sample a wide variety that way or I cook for myself with fresh local produce that I wouldn’t be able to do on a boat.

I have to say the only thing that appeals to me is waking up in a different place.

Swarm of locusts on big cruise ships, but more amenities. Galapagos was a cruise, but there were 40 something on the ship, about half were our friends.

Is there at St. Petersburg in Russia?

Is that pastor?

BTW Tortas ahogadas and carne en su jugo are the "typical" dishes from Jalisco.

Don't forget the birria!

The only crowds are getting on the boat initially ( think airport ) as you check in. Your bags are delivered to your cabin.
You can get on and off the boat at your own timing tho you don't want to be late boarding....you will have a bag scan after each day trip....some items not allowed.

You cannot cook for yourself but you get local cuisine at the stop overs and the ship tries to match ports of call with varied buffet items related to where you are docked....Don't think anyone cruises for the onboard food tho some of the sit down restaurants are very good.

A huge advantage....unpack once and go explore every day at your own pace
Or choose an excursion ( we don't often tho the salmon breeding facility in Alaska was fascinating ) The train up the Whitehorse Pass was an astonishing ride through history ....the narrow track they climbed with 100lb each on their back is still there and visible along with the original Mountie Station at the top.

We went first time because there is only one way to see Muir Glacier.

We did a few more due to value for money and a relaxed holiday ...doing the Baltic Capitals cruise was mainly for The Hermitage but we enjoyed the other capitals too...Finland in particular tho we avoid cities most times.

Kicking back reading a book on the balcony while moving to a new port makes for a very relaxing time....one reason we try an choose cruises that stay close to land.

I've never done it but many speak highly of self navigated canal boat tours in UK and Europe.

Narrowboat

Narrowboat

I’ve driven/pilotted/manned whatever the boat term is…one of the narrow boats. Very relaxing way to travel. Super slow so you have no choice but to take it easy.

very extensive canal system with old fashioned pubs along the way

Behave yourselves folks. Cya in Feb!

Sh*t, have fun. Did a trip over 25 years ago now where we stayed in Chiang Mai and I rented an NC30 to do day rides into the Golden Triangle. Some of the best riding ever, but I didn't pack any gear, so had to take it easy. Eventually cobbled together a jean jacket, some leather work gloves and a helmet that may have been less than 15 years old, but they didn't have rugby prop farang sizes in t-shirts, let alone riding gear. Still had a ball, especially on that little screamer V4 400.

Make sure to remember to ride on the left! You don't have the constant reminder that you do by being on the right side of a car...

Thailand is on my list. Just need the time off work to do it justice.

I’ve promised the wife I will take her to (ethically) see elephants. Ethically means rescued or the like..not performing animals for tourists so this will take a bit of research.

I also want to go back to El Salvador and take this tour Guided guerrilla tours explore a unique side of El Salvador. It is guided by actual guerrillas that were operational during the civil war.

And also one of the Pablo Escobar tours in Colombia.

Rented a Triumph Bonneville when i was in Chiang Mai for a trip to Pai, had an absolute blast

Yes I did CM and the Mae Hong Son Loop back in 2017. Revisiting but with friends this time. Left side of the road didn’t take long to get used to, but I quickly realized you have to go into every blind corner expecting a large truck half in your lane. Everyone is hyper aware of motorcycles tho, it’s a breathe of fresh air riding there for sure.

Did not enjoy Pai the last time I was there. Full of loud hippies and these giant months or something everywhere. Hoping this time is better.

Yes one of my friends wants to visit an elephant sanctuary while here.

Oh I absolutely hated Pai because of the hippies, not my kind of place. I meant more riding through the mountains and stopping off at some tiny villages along the way
