That is a smart way to do it.I have no issue with Mexico , we go , enjoy ourselves and stay out of bars after 8pm unless it’s at the hotel I’m staying at.
Same in Guatemala or Panama , we like it , stay out of trouble and don’t go looking for it. I learned 40yrs ago in Venezuela , in places where life is cheap , don’t think being a wht Canadian is of any benefit. .

Mexico, it's literally a wolf in sheep's clothing. You are basically gambling with your safety by going there. The problem is the bad stuff can happen everywhere, there is no way to completely avoid it or thinking you are actually safe. I know you can say the same thing here, but down there anything can happen and to a farther level of extreme, we are not accustom to, and basically the country is lawless so counting on the law(s) that is useless once something happens.
