I have no issue with Mexico , we go , enjoy ourselves and stay out of bars after 8pm unless it’s at the hotel I’m staying at.
Same in Guatemala or Panama , we like it , stay out of trouble and don’t go looking for it. I learned 40yrs ago in Venezuela , in places where life is cheap , don’t think being a wht Canadian is of any benefit. .
Mexico, it's literally a wolf in sheep's clothing. You are basically gambling with your safety by going there. The problem is the bad stuff can happen everywhere, there is no way to completely avoid it or thinking you are actually safe. I know you can say the same thing here, but down there anything can happen and to a farther level of extreme, we are not accustom to, and basically the country is lawless so counting on the law(s) that is useless once something happens.
We are a bit off topic…however, you know, and the courts showed, police charges showed, and legal precedent showed and even the court of popular opinion showed that you’re wrong.
Check out what is happening in El Salvador.... Nayib Bukele seems to have found a "solution" but when things are that bad the cost of the solution is VERY high. It is an interesting read none the less (agree or disagree with the approach).
An inept police force allowed it to happen, escalate, complacency and ignored it. Causing it is a stretch.

I have zero fear of Mexico , but I’ll go to Cabo or the Quintanroo area where your miles from the problems . I dress down and take cabs, rental cars are targets .
Don’t go out looking for trouble and it won’t likely find you . So many horror stories have lots of drinking and coming home from the bar late attached to them .

The tolerance for stupid is much lower outside the bubble of canada/western europe.
You wouldnt want to get into a drunken bar fight in ukraine or russia either, but if you know where you are, and move accordingly, you'll have 0 problems.

Mexico isn’t too bad as they know tourism is a big part of their economy and they protect it. The cartel crap does spill over every now and then though.

My preference is a sleepy gated community in SW Florida. It's cheap, the food and drink are great, the pool and surroundings clean, and it's as safe to drive as the GTA. And I can get 1st world health care should an emergency happen.
I've never felt unsafe or scared walking around town or up to an ATM.
I do see some violence -- the senior's hour lineup at Bob Evans can get nasty!
When I travel by myself for work I like to hit local spots, pubs, etc. as much as possible. BUT I am smart about it and in some locations I only do so with a group of the locals I am working with, others not at all. All about knowing risk and being cognizant of it.
Travelling with family and my aversion to risk increases.
