Hiring Immigrants instead of " our own people "

We don't need a system of tax credits, for hiring immigrants. We need a system to get people to work. Period.

What we do need is a system to get immigrants, with valuable professional skills our Province is in need of, up to speed and qualified to practise their professions here. We don't need trained doctors driving cabs. We need them serving patients.

/thread right here.

Not sure if McGuinty is propsing this tax credit as a way to get the immigrant votes, or if he genuinely cares about this issue. Maybe it's both? Either way, I don't think this method is the right way of solving this problem.

spoken like a true politician...telling us what we want to here but not really saying how...

If they don't have the motor skills to drive a cab worth crap do you want them taking out your appendix?

More seriously, are the professionals not available or is the money to hire them not available? It's amazing how shortages disappear when money shows up.

I agree. Everybody is a doctor or engineer when they're driving a cab. There are ways to practice engineering or medicine when you're from another country. The tests they have to go through are legitimate and important. I'm sure the process could be improved, but there needs to be a thorough process in place.

There was a great article in the paper yesterday about someone who had emigrated here from Russia and was talking about how tough it was to get a job..she had her Masters..in RUSSIAN LITERATURE! Wow..that's worth a lot here..

Darn immigrants! Ill help you defend against those Morans!

my brotherdad is all loaded, get ya'll hillbilly redneck brotherdads too.

This is somewhat related. My wife brought our youngest child to school Tuesday, first day of grade one. My wife met the teacher and was standing there speaking with some other mothers when, in her words, a mother and child of either Indian or Pakistani origin came up to the teacher and told her that her child was not going to stand for the playing of the National Anthem. When asked why, the teacher was told that they did not respect Canada and hated the country. Apparently, this woman went off for a few minutes about her hate for the country, leaving the teacher flustered and my wife, never one to be at a loss for words, speechless.

I'm all for immigration, but if I were to hear something like that, my response would be to offer to pay for their plane ride home. I'd even help them pack and drive them to the airport. It's a shame that such a small minority of people make so many look bad.

That's ****ing disgusting.

im not 100% on this, but i think jehova's witnesses dont stand for the anthem either

There is a need for doctors in this country which might be the reason they bring them over, but then stop them from getting anywhere. If you're going to do that then just bring people qualified only able to do manual labour if that's what you want.

That's a right hand...left hand thing. Right hand (immigration) prioritizes these people who have skilled backgrounds...then the left hand (Medical organizations like the OMA) prevent them from practicing.

It's messy.

The thing is also only 1,500 bucks. Thats like pocket change.

Food for thought, then I'm going to grab myself some popcorn:

1. Medical schools in India are actually far more advanced than Canadian ones, which means that Indian doctors who hail from these medical schools are often times more qualified to practice medicine than our 'own'.

2. Immigration doesn't allow new immigrants into the country all willy-nilly. It's actually quite a lengthy process, and the applicant must be bringing so much money into the country to qualify as well. The rich have a much easier time getting in.

3. Many immigrants are forced to take low paying, dangerous or messy jobs with terrible hours that our 'own' don't even want. E.g., late night gas bar attendants, taxi drivers, laundry staff in hospitals, etc. And many of these people have better educations than most Canadians have. E.g., my esthetician has her Masters in Engineering, and yet here she is waxing armpits and plucking eyebrows because the Canadian qualifier exams that would allow her to practice her field here are so expensive to take, she simply cannot afford it.

4. In arguments about immigrants, one needs to think about the 'type' of immigrant they vilify. If someone bashes an immigrant from India, do they also bash an immigrant from Australia? How about Sweden? Probably not. A lot of those that scream about immigrants would probably find that their anger is seated in racism and/or ethnocentricism.

@stormcat - Who allowed you to pollute this thread with reason? I already got my 2x4's, gasoline and ***** sheets ready!

On a serious note, I have to admit that I'm against any form of discrimination, which includes "affirmative action" or as we call it here in Canada "employment equity."

1. Document are easily forged. Testing isn't.

2. Good...I wouldn't want it any other way.

3. Ever hear of paying dues? We make 20somethings do the same.

4. Your confusing immigration with flat out racism.

We already have things like retraining programmes. Fund them. Expand them. Both 'new' and 'old' Canadians can benefit from them.

As to getting new professionals up to speed, it varies by the profession and the professional groups involved. Some are throwing up roadblocks. There is no single answer. In most cases, though, it requires qualifying their current level of knowledge. That's an educational issue; testing.

The professionals are available, but you have to insure that they come up to our standards of performance. That requires some sort of a vetting process. As I stated, above, some professions are putting up roadblocks to proving that ability.

Amen to that!! Fairness and equality means you don't have a quota for certain types of people...every man/woman for themselves and best man/woman for the job no?

My cousin did up a documentary i think that was shown on BBC about struggling Canadian immigrants and he followed this dude who came here and was a taxi driver..was a legitimate doctor in his country, and worked for 5 years or so to save the money up to get his license back to practise here.

There are certainly "sponges" but I wouldn't limit that to immigrants...there are a TON of Canadians who sponge off the system. It's not fair to anyone who's a hard worker..I see people who were on EI....it runs out and they granted ANOTHER young adult EI type of extended policy which includes dental/health benefits, grocery money, etc...I had to work as a contractor for a year before I could get my company to offer me benefits! Before that I was paying thousands for wisdom teeth/root canal, etc.

and one last thing, that story of the parent/child at grade one, that is truly disgusting. It's one thing to be a sponge, but a sponge that bites the hand that feeds..? That's like a Domo or evil spongebob.

They're not expensive, unless $130 is expensive... But they DO require her to actually know what she's doing. I suspect her "masters degree" is not the equal of what is required by Ontario to practice as an engineer. There are all kinds of useless degrees in the world. I suspect she may have some kind of degree that is not sufficient to practice here and she is unwilling to go back to school to upgrade. She's also been out of the field for a while, if she was ever in the field, is has lost all her practical knowledge. She might also simply be lazy..
