Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

No dust , no progress

Trust me. It’s causing a strain between us as I want to get the work done but she’s complaining about dust and not having a functional bedroom.

Lost a full week this week because I was home and could’ve done good progress.

Super frustrating.

Might take all of April off as vacation time and just do it.

Send her on a vacation with the kids for the month

I posted this last July of the one I built (first attempt). I did custom boxes but you could just as easily do pre-made HD boxes which is what I did in the pantry. Shelves are pine with mdf trim but you could just as easily use all mdf. This wasn’t a difficult project if that’s kinda what you’re looking for.
I might just copy you. Patents or copyrights?

Installed new weather stripping around the side door into the garage, and the big double door into the living room. Hopefully this helps keep the heat in better.

On another note. Alectra stated they can come and disconnect and reconnect power during installation of siding on the exterior for free once per year.

@SunnY S and @backmarkerducati any idea on whether the mast and exterior meter need to be moved away from the house in order to install 2” siding? Or can I cover the mast and just keep the meter visible?

they will disconnect and reco for "free", but you still have to hire a licensed electrician to secure permit for them to reconnect or they won't do it.

cleanest look is if you pull everything off, and re install it over the siding, otherwise, most siding guys just butt up to it and work around it.

Just don't cover (conceal) service pipe, they might not like that.

Great thanks! Lady on the phone said no electricians needed or permits for a disconnect and reconnect so glad to know this tidbit.

I’ll call the electrician as I’d rather just move everything out and do the mast and meter atop the siding for a cleaner look.

Thanks!

Does mast go through roof? If yes, what is your plan to deal with that offset?

Please go to the effort of pulling and reinstalling the mast . I see siding jobs done with a butt up and box around the mast and meter base and it looks so amateur. 10k in siding and they halfass the last steps

So I’ll ask the next question…

What is a place to buy siding and hard insulation besides HD?

The black market? Or are there shops that sell with better pricing?

Have we convinced you to do hardie board or are you sticking with vinyl? In any case, Crankcall always advocates for the independent/semi-independent shops (eg. Simcoe building supply).

Yup , Herman’s is Oakville , even the Rona on speers in Oakville ( go directly to the contractors desk) . I find the big box a complete pain . The sq ft price of siding is not bad , they make all the money on the trims . If you have access to a brake and some talent you can save a fortune doing some basic bends . Don’t waste time trying to make complicated corners ect . They cost what they cost , fit and look proper .
Buy a siding nailer , it will make you happy .
In terms of market share , vinyl is huge , it’s cheap , easy to install and ugly. Cement siding (Hardie) is making huge gains annually, it’s easy to install , lasts forever , can be ordered prepainted to make life easy and is rodent proof ish, fire resistant. Wood is only about 5% of the market , expensive, looks awesome , has to be maintained.
If you decide to go Fraser wood siding or Hardie plank cement , I’ll ask at the office for a suggestion close to you for a friendly dealer to work with . Can’t help you with vinyl .

Will be measuring house soon and will price both.

Unfortunately price IS a factor and needs to be considered.

Thanks! Is the brake the long tool that bends aluminum siding? Dad has one of those for sure. Maybe 6-8ft long though so it wouldn’t do a single 20ft run unfortunately.
