Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Anybody know what kind of material is good for building a tv wall unit?

Plywood?
MDF?
Actual wood?

Would you consider re-purposing something. There’s lots of cheap cabinets and shelving units available that can be modified. Depending on what you want for final effect there are various choices in paints

A neighbor does a lot of chalk paint refinishing.

I’m kicking myself for not grabbing a solid walnut dining table with leaves for $90. I was going to scrap the bottom and rework the top into a sofa table. I was holding out for a price drop. :(

I actually haven’t considered the used market at all.

Good call!

All of the above. Design, cost and finish should dictate which is best for your particular case.
Agreed.
If painting I'd go with MDF and poplar. No real benefit to using plywood unless moisture is a concern.

When I retired I didn't need the office so it went back to a spare bedroom. While this isn't perfect it's something to fill the gap while I search out the right stuff. $45 at Restore. It's IKEA so it came apart and got put back together in the rec room.

I'm not always good at visualizing and if it didn't work out it wasn't a lot of money.

The modification is the wider desk top. It doesn't show well in the picture but there are two side angles that a deeper top slides under. It adds 7", making it more workable as a desk. I need a bigger waste basket though.

The plan is to have a mini office that looks more like a library. There's about four feet to the right that would be convenient for a filing cabinet that doesn't look like one. Maybe disguise it as a liquor cabinet.

If you would consider mdf and can wait till January when i consider going back to work , let me know how many sheets in what size , I may have a few sheets . I also have extira mdf ( waterproof) but unless you desk will sit outside , you don’t need it .

January is non issue. I’ll draw up some plans for the wall tonight once the monsters go to bed.

I posted this last July of the one I built (first attempt). I did custom boxes but you could just as easily do pre-made HD boxes which is what I did in the pantry. Shelves are pine with mdf trim but you could just as easily use all mdf. This wasn’t a difficult project if that’s kinda what you’re looking for.

Beautiful job! Very similar to what I want to do.

Wife gave me poo that there’s too much junk in the house so cleaning up.

Bonus…found the charger for my heated gloves!

Any use for old network routers or should I just toss them?

I use them in locations with lots of equipment (like office, near TVs, etc). Either wifi bridge (wifi into router, cables out) or switch (one cable in, lots of cables out).

I was using one in place of a switch, with the wifi turned off.

Right now I have the bedrooms, living room, kitchen and basement wired.

I should toss the old router I have, as the security on it is probably crap now.

I’m thinking of tossing as these are all 5-8 years old.

I’m told life expectancy is 6-8 yrs on a router and gains are happening quickly , you get much faster / reliable for less than you paid 8 yrs ago.

With some help from a kind Gtamer I found my hidden transformer. TDR gave us an idea (and showed that my suspected location was very unlikely). Beeper got me close. Cut a hole in the garage wall to access. Beeper triggered on a group of parallel wires carrying the tone but transformer was less than a foot away. Now to come up with a good solution for an LED driver and complete the light swap. Wife was unimpressed that I cut another hole in the house.
