Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

No cooktop ventilation? How do you find that works?
We have a 30 year old downdraft Jennair range. Thing will not die. Eventually we will have to replace it. I've considered doing without ventilation but concerned for obvious reasons. It's in an island.
No real issues in all honesty. We do have a ventilator higher up, but it doesn’t vent outside just through a filter.

Had the same setup at our old place and no real issues.

Jennair's are not what they used to be. Whirlpool bought them out and raped it of the high quality it once was.

While it is obviously a prick to install, lots of hoods designed for islands available now. Iirc, someone also makes as add on downdraft so you could utilize your existing duct with a normal cooktop.

When I can find one for the right price, I am converting my hood to remote fan. So much quieter and more airflow if you want it. The only plausible way to get control wires from hood to fan are through the duct. Dont love that option. I need to how low-voltage control wiring or wireless. Line voltage inside a greasy duct is a terrible idea.

I'm aware of all the options. More difficult with a range than just a cooktop. Buying a regular slide in range and a separate telescoping vent gets really expensive.

If I was designing a bathroom from scratch I’d install a men’s urinal . 90% of my trips are for a tinkle . I have yet to see one in residential use , but why not

Marble floors and misguided urine doesn't work well. Marble is porous and there's no way of getting rid of the stains. I imagine a urinal is better than a crapper, especially if you get a urinal with a fly painted on the inside. Having a target apparently helps.
Problem with flies is they hang out on the rim of a urinal.

Gets messy when you piss them off.

I pulled ours out decades ago and have had zero issues. Maybe if you cook restaurant quantities but for regular meal prep I don't think most people need one.

What are you (not) cooking that you can get away with no ventilation? I have an overhead microwave and I can't stand how bad the ventilation system in that is for things like searing meat or frying eggs. Not too many (good) vent hoods can be installed in its place due to the proximity of an angled corner cabinet right next to it, so we've been living with it.

Also, lots of recent articles about poor indoor air quality if you use a gas stove without ventilation. I dont have a pm2.5 meter so I dont know if that is universal or just in the sample kitchens.

I normally have hood on low when stove or oven is on in summer. Heating the air to air condition the air is expensive. When colder, I run hood if doing something smoky or crazy amounts of steam but not every time I'm cooking.

Internally vented hoods are a waste imo. They pick up a tiny amount but I suspect that if you sampled the air in and out there wouldnt be a huge difference (especially given the complete lack of filter maintenance that most people do).

Probably everything you cook. Sure sometimes the house smells like a 3 storey walk up after cooking supper. So what, it quickly dissipates. There has never been any kind of grease or moisture build up above the stove.
Electric range so no gas concerns.

All sorts of food and as mentioned by @timtune it is VERY rare that it’s an issue. I don’t even thing we turn it on unless it’s a big production.

As for me. Installed the new bathroom fan with dad today. The silence is fantastic.

And the surprise at HD…electrical cabling behind lock and key.

Noticed the cage at my local HD the other day too. Guess with the price of it, theives risk vs reward analysis means its worth stealing.

So….dad bought some fresh chickens near Wasaga and just had it for soup. Holy snap what a delicious meal that was.

Now wife wants our own chickens. We’re in Ward 6 of Mississauga which is apparently doing a trial with results in 2023. I know a few people on the street already have them so need to have some discussion and maybe buy some chickens for next year.

Egg chickens are easy when the local wildlife isn't eating them.
