Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Pull the trigger. Quick. That's the cheapest I've seen in a long time.
He did. At that price it wasn’t worth doing it alone.

They did my cousins houses over the years. I’ll probably use them on my roof when it’s time.

We will be using Certainteed landmark pro hi def shingles , with the special starter row and formed cap shingles . My understanding is its about as good an asphalt shingle as the market has right now. Labour, disposal, manufacturing costs will likely never go down on this stuff so its a 30yr solution.
There is zero fun in doing something like a roof , but less fun in doing drywall ceiling repairs so......

That's what we used. No issues so far (as expected). I wasn't sure if Oakville townhouse prices justified shake/tile/grand manor shingles. They can look good on the right house but the price is eye-watering.

My fridge got repaired. Surprisingly even with the callout fee it was only $200 for a new thermistor and fan panel. My fridge water filter seems to still be frozen though so we will see if there’s been any damage there. Turned the pressure back on and will see if it actually flows at some point or maybe even floods if the filter cracked.

I'd pull the filter as a start. If you get lucky, there might be a valve behind you can push to see if the blockage is before the filter (sprayed in face equals water to filter is good). You might be able to use a tap to push water through the filter, otherwise just leave it out for a while so you know for sure it's not frozen. Thawing the internal fridge circuits will probably require defrosting the whole fridge (pre filter tubing can normally be accessed by removing a panel inside the fridge at the back and blowing warm air around the coil but at that point, you might as well melt the whole thing).

Can’t get the filter out currently, I think it’s frozen in there. I did think about using pliers at some point but then ran through that scenario and what would happen taking into account my past history with impatience and using excessive force on various components and decided it would end in an expensive bill.

Tech said to switch the water back on, keep trying the dispenser until water runs then use the water pressure to help push the filter out to check if it’s all good. Said it might take 24/48h.

I’d keep the water off until the filter thaws and then you can inspect it for damage. It would be a shame to wake up to a flooded kitchen and basement.

I know for our fridge, you have to push in on the filter and then turn it to remove it. Check YouTube or google.

Friend was away for a couple of months. I noticed their outside faucet had burst so I shut off their water (entire house), I could not reach the internal shutoff for the faucet (stuff in the way). Week or so later they had another friend turn the water back on after digging out the internal shutoff for the outdoor faucet, then...

When they came back the entire kitchen floor and the basement below it was destroyed, ice maker/water dispenser in the fridge had also failed, just some irony.

Only slightly related but..
Couple of years ago we had a flyer that told us the council was relining the main water pipes and that our water supply would be disconnected and then come in via above ground supply hoses while the work was being done. These hoses turned out to be an inch or so diameter. I tweeted a message to the utilities people asking if the work would be done before the weather turned crap and the hoses froze. Got a response “yes, no problem”. So this continued for quite a bit, still no work done, still getting water supplied via these hoses and the forecast turned and it got really cold. Everything froze…some of the supply hoses burst. No one had water in the entire street. I sent some very smug tweets to the utilities people for everyone to see along the lines of “remember what I said weeks ago?”. Don’t think I was on their Xmas list for a while.

A cottage up north had a fridge ice maker issue and sprayed water for months while the owners were away. The heat was on so mold developed. The place became contaminated and insurance wouldn't cover the damage because they didn't have the cottage checked on regularly.

One of my many bosses had his fridge water supply let go on the ski chalet down in Ellicottville last fall . They couldn’t get there , but had been paying a local to check the place every 30 days . It may have only leaked for 3 days or 28 but the insurance claim was over 40k US . Finished basement flooring , drywall , kitchen hardwood , what a mess.

If I'm away for more than a week, I shut off the water. Not a lot of upside to leaving it on and it can avoid a big downside.

That's a great idea too bad we can't shut the water off when we go away when it's winter cuz this water pump also supplies the furnace

While not perfect, couldnt you isolate domestic water? That gets rid of a lot of failure points. If the pump or pressure tank leaks, at least that's in the utility room with a drain.

The more convenience we add to our lives , the bigger the insurance settlements .
The included coverage for basements would barely cover replacement of mechanical equipment. Then they price upgrading to useful coverage to the moon.

On that note, some of the houses in the subdivision have sump pits/pumps. Ours doesnt. Apparent basement elevation seems similar. Most never come on according to owners. At least one does and house is a few blocks away and ~10` higher elevation. Looks like a 2" discharge pipe and runs for less than 5 seconds before kicking off. Runs even when it hasn't rained so it must be a groundwater issue. Pump seems grossly oversized but maybe there are times where they need that ridiculous flow.

Filter came out easy peasy this morning. You guys had me paranoid so I shut the water off overnight to the fridge. Swapped in a new filter and she’s good to go. Just got to wait now and see if the ice maker is working.

I would also be paranoid. For some reason my wife preferred engineered hardwood flooring in the kitchen instead of tile.

Our ice maker is only crushing ice. Can’t seem to get it to actually provide the cubes.

Anyone have any clue about that?
