Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Had a new hot water tank, and new air conditioner installed today. Not too bad I guess, but I'm happy with the work. 4 hours in/out.

No heat pumps or fancy models. Simple and to the point.

I'm helping (ie doing most of the work) my parents renovate their basement. I'm installing crown moulding to hide the ugly corners where the walls meet the ceiling. It's a bit of a challenge due to the height of the ceiling coupled with some doors and windows. The doors with casing won't allow for the crown to pass over top, so it looks like I'll be doing lots of returns .

I don't know about that approach. I suspect there are better looking ways to solve your problem. Image is obviously a vent but the return with bare wall between is harsh. I think I'd try to fit casing and crown together so the crown continued through.

Compared to what is there now, anything will be an improvement.

I got the pressure washer home and will look to wash my horrible looking fence. Might not look half bad after clearing off the junk.

Appliance woes continue....

My 7yo Samsung French door refrigerator recently became possessed and decided that the refrigerator portion wasn’t cold enough and so froze everything in there. Found this out by hearing a small explosion of a pop can in the fridge one day just for fun. Technician is here and says we are doing well as the life expectancy of these (really expensive!) refrigerators is 6.5-7y. Thermistor panel is going to be replaced. If the part is in stock it won’t cost a lot.

I had an old simple fridge that started grenading pop cans. Oddly enough it was a door leak. I forget the logic but somehow the door got twisted and when I wrenched it back into shape it settled down. My beer fridge could apply for CPP.

We had a 1950s vintage fridge running in the garage , it left when I figured out the house A/C took less power .

My parents still have a fridge in the basement that dad remembers getting a new compressor when ontario switched from 25 cycle power to 60 cycle power. It works but has a tendency to freeze food. It's only turned on a few days a year.

I've started refinishing the hardwood in a spare bedroom. Sand off the original varnish and prepare to refinish with with water based stuff.

Personally I don't like the way the water based stuff handles but the light coulour of the wood is the trade off.

Good news, bad news. The good news is the room is small. The bad news is that a heavy duty floor sander isn't practical.

My backyard was all deck and the dog had no place to “go” . Sawed out an L at one corner and placed 8” of crushed stone and sand then Astro turfed it . Yes the stadium grade grass is crazy money , but it looks great and never needs mowed .

The neighbour had his small backyard done in artificial turf a year back. He was having it power brushed the other day.

Yard cleanup at the cottage. Dad rented a shredder/chipper…not bad but the small funnel jams up easy so have to really slowly put the leaves/needles in.

That rental chipper looks frustrating, just big enough to look like it should work and small enough to be almost useless

It works but you have to really control the amount of leaves / twigs going is as it gets chocked up in the funnel.

Def need a larger opening.

Well we finally got all 5 homeowners ( freehold townhouses) to agree on a quality level and all same Color for roof shingling, picked a contractor and have the deposit in . Now comes the wait while he tries to schedule us in . Final is $9,400 per house , taxes in. More than l wanted to spend but we won’t have to think about this again for 20yrs and I don’t think the costs will ever go down.

Good job. If you can see the roof, multi-colored townhouses look like crap. Even if you cant see the roof, I never trust the tie-in to existing shingles. Far too many lazy/incompentent trades. Surprised the number came out so high but I assume you looked around and that is now a reasonable price.

We could have gotten a bit less , but we went with top end shingles , it’s a really architecturally interesting roof ( peaks and eyebrow windows and some copper roofing , that is not being replaced) so I’m happy enough with the number , and it’s three floors up . The company we gave the contract to has been around 60yrs so maybe my 30yr warranty has legs .
The roofer that can start in two days , that’s the guy you do not want.

What shingles did you pick? Did you upgrade to the super-pricey super-thick ridge?

Buddy just got quotes for a detached house in Orillia. 8k for the whole high pitched roof.
