Dream job

found out today my meeting/interview next week is with the incoming GM and AGM, as well as a pair of Directors. Sounds pretty intimidating, glad i know them all lol.
Sounds like a good thing. I had a chat with a buddy on the other team I want to apply to. It went well.

Talked to the boss to let her know I applied. Wasn’t happy but very supportive and said to let her know if it moves forward. I know my chances are slim....but why the hell not? LoL
Mine went OK. Seems they want to put a lot of responsibility on this role that I hadn’t seen coming. Not quite in my wheel house.

we shall see

I’ve been told not to get my hopes up for the senior role, but that I have a shot at the mid level role. Let’s see what happens in the coming weeks. Haven’t told my direct supervisor but I think I will as he seems fairly cool and would be supportive. Plus I’d still have interaction with him moving forward as the two functions are very integrated.

it's doable, we do something similar. but there's about 10 people walking the entire plant and wiping down every touch point every 15 minutes all day every day.
Cleaners come about once a month here ?

But I think the boss did increase it to twice?

Definitely not daily... Nobody is being paid to wipe stuff down every x minutes with a record.

Got back at least 20 rejection letters this week :(. At least some of my stocks went to the moon

That’s a ****** work condition then wherever you are.

Also, in 24 years of working and applying for jobs....I think I can count on one hand how many rejection letters I got. Less than 5 from hundreds of applications.

Wow

How

Yeah years ago wifey got her MPH and then applied like crazy. She had 1 interview and 2 rejections out of maybe 30 + applications. She was ****** about non response.

Surprised no one has mentioned the steel mills in here. Talk about doing nothing all day. My uncle tells me stories. Sometimes working for an hour on a 12 hour shift is a lot of work for him. Load up 3 steel coils on a truck, wait for it to drive to nanticoke and back and load up 3 more...
Even better, management allows them to come in On overtime for a 10 or 12 hour shift KNOWING there is no work for them to do. Or will give them a job that might take half an hour. Lots of movies get watched.

Thanks for this I’ll forward to my steel buyer lol

LoL what do you mean? I applied to hundreds and hundreds of jobs, yet only got rejection from less than 5. The others were silent with no rejection or acceptance letters.

since graduating I’ve had....7 jobs. 3 before graduating university.

Hmm I graduated less than 5 years ago and 99.999% of the time it is contract work. So my resume is getting longer and longer

Or I just suck at my job so they don't want to hire me full time (unlikely...)

Ex bil was an electrical maintenance manager at Dofasco. He worked 3 shifts and on nites he had a cot in his stores room. As long as there were no bulbs to change, he slept the shift away.

Employers have figured out that they can fill most of their roles with contract employees and save some money and maintain flexibility. I dont like it but it's common. Hell, even govt does this for some roles where people are routinely contract for five years or more before getting a permanent offer.

Buddy is a nuclear operator at OPG. Homer Simpson stereotype to the T. I have applied a million times there to no avail. Had an interview once but once they heard I graduated in engineering they pulled the plug.

bastard (and I say this lovingly) making 130-150k/year for 15 years doing literally nothing. And ready to retire with full pension in a few years...he’s 39. Yes, I’m jealous.

@george__ nothing wrong with contract work in my opinion. So long as you’re gaining experience and making more money than full timers to account for lack of benefits.

This is very weird because in software, I've noticed many employers following the pattern of:
  1. We have no idea wtf we're doing so we will outsource our software dev, plus we are not a software shop (contract)
  2. Oh ****, we want to have more control (buys back software)
  3. Oh ****, we have no idea how to actually develop software (hires internal software developers)
Then there's there's a ton of SAAS jobs.

Exactly what's happening here and they think I am a magician that can do the work of a team for a crappy salary

Thanks COVID
