A few observations:

1. I never knew Alzheimer’s was contagious
2. What I thought about the average intelligence of Americans is woefully incorrect. George Carlin had this one right.
3. Odd to have a G7 head more widely liked by an actual enemy of the G7
4. Wildly promising everyone ponies despite not having any ponies does actually work

I wonder if it was the lies, felony convictions, the sexual assaults or the admiration of Putin that drew all the voters in?

Trump voters now: Look at me, I cut my arms off and now I’m more aerodynamic!

Trump voters in a few years: “Hey Cletus, why am I earning peanuts picking lettuce on a farm or cleaning toilets? And why did that Orange guy not make me more wealthy?”

That ain't over 'til it's over. Lots of charges that were put off that he still has to face - federal and state wise.

If he's still alive in Jan. 2028. The guy that made the McDonald's diet documentary (Spurlock IIRC?) is dead, and he wasn't 78.

I fear we are witnessing the decline and fall of the American Empire.
I'm not sure that's the case. I know a ton of Americans, I lived there for years, and I have many friends, neighbors, and colleagues. You see a lot of guns and Bibles in the media; it's not like that at all on the street. While there are political differences, people get along in day-to-day life just as political opposites do in Canada.

This election came down to what Americans want to see in their future, not necessarily who they love as a leader. Look at the Senate, Governer races, and the House, and the popular vote, everything moved right, 100% of the battleground states went to the Republicans.

The last 4 years have been tough for the average American high inflation, affordability crisis (housing and food), mounting costs for foreign wars, border insecurity, and a rise in crime. They are suffering most of the same issues as we are in Canada, and like Canada (and just about everywhere) these happened under the leadership of their left-leaning party. Democrats pushed their party's agenda over their democratic mandate, that's the key reason they got removed. The same thing happened to Wynne in Ontario, Trudeau will face this too.

The Dems also mismanaged their own leader selection, Harris just wasn't ready. She was not experienced, and the party did not prepare her for the job, and the same way they push their agenda, they subverted the democratic process with a Leader coronation.

So, we have 4 more years of Trump. Hopefully this time he will spend less time in courtrooms and hearings and more time making America great again.

Concur.

I watched a lot of interviews and everyone across the country was saying the same thing;

criminal record? Strong man? Liar? etc?

We don't care, we trust him more to fix the country. That's what we care about.

Before or after golf?

To be honest the Americans get the leader they deserve. Good luck with that. Version 1.0 should have informed them what version 2.0 will get them. Empty promises, diminishment on the world stage, extreme division. Instead they followed the words of a salesman over those of a politician. My opinion is they have been sold a dream that won’t be fulfilled but the words sure sound nice.

I feel really sorry for what the Ukrainians will have to put up with now. They don’t deserve any of what they have been suffering with and it’s likely to get worse. Putin must be pissing himself with laughter today.

Because politicians have been failing them, their system is busted.

And Trump was excellent for the US economy in his first term.

I really hope the rest of the world has made contingency plans for operating without US participating in the world, because that's what I see happening.
This is an interesting topic.

Team America World Police.

Some feel that Superpower or not, the US (and others) should keep their nose out of other peoples business. Do they have a moral obligation to intercede?

It's well proven that people react more to how they feel than what they are promised.

When Americans, (like Canadians) don't feel positive about their economic prospects, security, safety, and the future of their families - they are most likely to look for change - they have lived under Trump and Biden policies, they know which made them feel better.

As always, it's the economy, stupid. Or to explain in more words from the brilliant historian, Dominic Sandbrook (short video, well worth a watch):

And before anyone draws some bigger conclusion about the world moving right, etc., the Conservatives were recently destroyed in the UK by Labour. The lesson to me is that folks are not happy with a notably declining quality of life and a larger global sense of insecurity. Anyone who was in power through the post-Covid inflation years is incredibly vulnerable. The so-called culture wars are a distraction from a declining prosperity in the west. Each 'side' has their bogeymen, but the reality is neither is addressing the real problem. That said, on the whole the right has found a resonant message in limiting immigration and lowering taxes, but the left has struggled to move beyond outdated ideas and a focus on social issues that are mostly peripheral to the average voter.

On a historical level, it will be interesting to see how much permanence Trump's instinct to withdraw the US from global affairs will actually have. There are many in my circle of friends who see the US as having done far more damage globally than Russia and China combined, so maybe the net result is positive for some in the long term. Western Europe will feel this acutely, as they'll have to stand on their own two feet regarding defense for the first time since the Second World War, and they're not going to like it. They're the ones most exposed by events in Ukraine, even if the US is largely responsible for the mess in one way or another.

Palestine, while being one of the greatest moral abdications of the West in a long, long list (my opinion, etc.), is largely meaningless on a geopolitical level at this point. The real one will be Taiwan. The semiconductor business is one that affects every facet of our lives, for better or worse, and it will be interesting to see how Trump handles China. Despite his tough guy rep, he was mostly a pussycat with the other true global powers the last time out (that's one key to maintaining the 'no wars' talking point), but China isn't going to be so easily mollified.

“No wars” is a pretty terrible poker tactic to be honest. Now any dictators, Tin Pot and otherwise, just know that the consequences for less than optimal global citizen behaviour are not that severe anymore.

If solving the Ukraine problem means Ukraine ceding 20% of it’s territory to an aggressive Russia then that’s a green light for China to take Taiwan and for N Korea to get all misty eyed over reasonably recent history.

About the only countries that are concerned are Arab ones and that’s only because Trump hates them unless they happen to have vast oil wealth, contribute cash to him and also like cutting people into tiny cubes if they become inconvenient.

I agree, US policy under Trump made the world less safe, not more.

…oh, and the immigration issue has been the trump card (pun intended) for any right wing government since time immemorial.

“Keep your eye on Abdul, he’ll steal all your cash. It’s definitely not me and my rich buddies that exploit Abdul and rob you blind that you need to be concerned with”.

Harris didn't overperform Biden in a single county from what I can tell. That is...insane.

Clarification; conditions were 3% or more
