Ding Dong, the witch is dead....

I'm not talking about threatening.. or concessions.. I'm talking about a trump'ish style response.. take shots back at them.
They want to put a 25% tariff because of immigration and fentanyl.. point out the amount of illegal guns that come in from the US.. the amounts of drugs, illegal immigration flowing into Canada from the US... their murder rate.. type of thing.
To Trump, anything Ford or Trudeau say is as important as a squeaking floor. A large number of Americans think the same. Their chit doesn't stink attitude

BLOTUS doesn't like it when people push back - he likes to fire them or force them to quit.
Remind you of someone else we know? I think his body count is up there with Trump's by now.

Trump responded to Ford right away.. The news is showing the clip of him say "That's okay.. that's fine.. The US is subsidizing...."
But right after he said that.. He said he wants to get a deal done with Canada..
Trump is a blowhard... everyone knows it.. blowhard comments deserve blowhard replies.. He said similar things the last time... it's negotiating tactic.. and we got a deal done and life went on.
We are the largest US car importer... We are the US's largest oil supplier.. Canada is the US's biggest importer of it's goods.. etc..etc..
Our economies are too intertwined for the anyone to say, or think, that we don't matter.

Wasn't Cuba a cold war logistical thing?
They would like you believe it was... but the cold war is gone but the embargo lives on, hobbling the Cuban economy.
I think the biggest problem Cuba has is the fact that Castro threw the mafia out of Cuba. There was never a time when the US couldn't just roll over Cuba... but the whole Cuban missile 'crisis" made the US look bad... and WEAK.
Cuba has never posed any threat to the US... the 'missile crisis" was a Soviet plan to get rid of the missiles in Turkey... and it worked... and it made the US look powerless.
There is no reason the embargo should continue other than SPITE. Cuba has actually done very well in the world, when they have no access to the world markets (thanks to the US embargo)
JFK inherited the problem, Castro TRIED to make nice with the US when he came into power, but the CIA would have no part of THAT. Alan Dulles and the mafia had more power than the US president and senate.

Canada supplies 52% of the US oil imports.
Canada is the US's biggest trading partner, by FAR
Trump can make all the noise he wants, but that ain't going away, and if Trump thinks industry will allow him to tax that by 25% he is stupider than he seems.
If Trump gets a 25% tariff on Canadian imports there will be a world recession starting the next day and Canada is better prepared (we have the resources that industry needs... we just don't have the industry that those resources need)

One of our biggest problems is we live next door to the US.
it has made us lazy, and we now rely WAY TOO MUCH on that trade. All (well... ALMOST all) our oil pipelines go south. Atlantic Canada buys oil on the international market because we don't have enough pipe to get them oil. We could sell LNG internationally but we have no pipelines going east or west... just south.

We took the lazy way out and now we are 100% tied to the US market... and so when the US elects some whackjob as president we have a wackjob controlling a big part of OUR economy
Selling a ton of hydrocarbons to China would REALLY help Canada's balance of trade with China... instead of giving China mining rights IN Canada.

But Canada being the 51st state? Over my dead body. America is the best place on earth to make money, but one of the worst places on earth to live. Canada is one of the BEST places on earth to live, and one of the worst places to make money. I don't know about YOU, but I spend more time and effort on living than I do on making money. Money is nice, nice life is better.
We're living in the US's shadow, but we don't have to. Canada COULD be a world power IF we wanted to be.

Industry can be built up with time.

Resources can’t. Those are fixed in physical locations.

Canada should focus on leveraging the resources we have, and build the industry around it…

But….

Greed. Laziness. Ineptitude.

Those don’t go well together.

Also harvesting resources alters the natural environment. Greenwashing politicians want to save every tree, bug and speck of dirt while at the same time spending like sheiks.

I'm hoping the new guy fixes that. The pipeline to the East stops at QC for one and only one reason - they want a gazillion dollars to cross their lawn. The pipelines to no LNG ports are a Steven Guilbeault problem.

If all goes well, PP will run the east-west pipeline thru La Tuque.

And maybe reduce their coal burn enough to get a few extra breaths of fresh air.

Almost any Canadian could live better and make more money south of the border -- including you. I split my adult life living between Canada and the USA -- the reason I live here now is because of deep family ties to the GTA.

I agree, but I'm not sure we're that ambitious as a nation.
