Feds say border protection is adequate and no changes are required. I almost spit my tea out when I saw big bad billy blairs current job title "Minister of Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction". Holy mother. He is probably the most corrupt person in the liberal party (and that is a high bar to try to achieve).

"Canada's border controls - and the 14-day quarantine requirement for returning travellers - are among the strictest in the world, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair told reporters" Another straight up lie. Suggesting you quarantine is substantially less strict that you spending 14 days in a locked down hotel that you pay for as is done is many other countries. I have hated that guys guts for decades, glad to see he is still worthy of that opinion.

" 81 per cent of the 6.5 million travellers who arrived in Canada between March 31 and Nov. 12 were exempt from quarantine, said the Canada Border Services Agency." wtf!!!!

How the hell can someone be exempt from quarantining. Is thier job or personal life more important then the health and safety of canadians? How about they arrive 2 weeks ahead of time then... 5.265million people came into the country and entered society with no quarantine required during the worst pandemic in a century...

Relax....

Every trucker who crosses the border to pickup a load and bring it across the border is counted as 1 of those occurrences.

Yes it is actually. Their job is 'critical' for the work and they are exempt for such reasons. The definition of exempt (for our project anyway) was that the particular person is responsible for the ongoing maintenance / operation / repair of a critical piece of infrastructure / machinery that is required for completion of an (identified) critical project.

So for instance, you have a particular job that is required to be done because it's 'essential' and it uses a specialized crane. The only people authorized for this crane are from Austria, or whatever country you choose the machine from. As such, this piece breaks down, and you need a person pronto to get it back up and running. You won't have the guy on standby because no one wants to pay him for 14 days to sit in a hotel, plus the cost of hotel, food, and daily allowances. Hence the project gets classified as essential, the workers for the equipment get classified as essential, and quarantine can be bypassed.

It literally comes down to how good your lawyers are to draft up the justification.

In addition, please remember that the workers are NOT essential....it's the work that's essential. You and I are unimportant in the government's grand scheme of things, we don't matter. The work needs to be done, and there is a line up a mile long of people willing to do that work.

Straight from the horse's mouth:

Essential work considered exempt under the Emergency Orders

  • A person or any person in a class of persons whom the Chief Public Health Officer determines will provide an essential service:
    • Persons in the trade or transportation sector who are important for the movement of goods or people, including truck drivers and crew members on any aircraft, shipping vessel or train, and that cross the border while performing their duties or for the purpose of performing their duties;
    • Persons who must cross the border regularly to go to their normal place of employment, including critical infrastructure workers (Energy and Utilities, Information and Communication Technologies, Finance, Health, Food, Water, Transportation, Safety, Government and Manufacturing), provided they do not directly care for persons 65 years of age or older within the first 14 days after their entry to Canada;
    • Technicians or specialists specified by a government, manufacturer, or company, who enter Canada as required for the purpose of maintaining, repairing, installing or inspecting equipment necessary to support critical infrastructure (Energy and Utilities, Information and Communication Technologies, Finance, Health, Food, Water, Transportation, Safety, Government and Manufacturing) and are required to provide their services within 14 days of their entry to Canada and have reasonable rationales for the immediacy of the work and the inability to plan for a 14 day quarantine;
I'm just happy that our employer refused these people to enter the site, and we actually did pay them close to $800-1000/day to sit in a hotel and diddle their bits. As well as providing them with full service and people bringing food/booze as they sat there for free.

This. Considering probably 80% of the people still crossing the border openly right now are commercial drivers, that 100% accounts for that number.

The other 20% are probably a significant portion of people who legit cross the border daily for work - IE all the nurses in Windsor who work at Detroit hospitals, etc.

Anyhow, that aside, here's some factual levity people can spread around to any of their "I ain't gettin no vaccine!" friends and family.

US numbers, but yeah, meh. Facts are facts.

A friend that is a doc in the US is the first person I know to get the shot.

I sure hope once more and more people start getting it and having no major issues the naysayers will slowly come on board.

I suspect it will still take some restrictions (likely next fall/winter) to push the remainder...things like restrictions for concerts/sporting events/etc where no proof of vaccination = you're not coming through the doors. By then any "OMG the vaccine is poison!" nonsense should be mostly behind us.

One of the best bits of legal advice I ever got was from a manager I worked under. He said that anytime you think about saying or doing something questionable, imagine yourself on a witness stand with a nasty lawyer pointing his finger at your nose and asking why you did what you did. If you say you did it to save money or make more profit you might as well kiss your future goodbye.

Lol.

Timely but completely unrelated to coronavirus ... just this afternoon, I got an email from the (US-based) project manager on a job site asking me if they could temporarily bypass a certain safety feature in order to teach two robots at the same time so that they could get done faster.

Uhhh, no. That would be a code violation. I ain't getting involved in that. My reply email consisted of an excerpt of the clause that they would be violating if they did that.

(If they did it without me knowing - which may well still happen - Doing so would reset a time-stamp and a "signature" feature, which means they wouldn't be able to do it without me finding out at some point ... and now it's documented that I told them they weren't allowed to do it ... I have a funny feeling that the question came about because they've already done it and are now asking for forgiveness ...)

Sounds a bit like the line i used to hear repairing hydraulics."We fixed it,but now it's broken".

Similar. While on a service call at a condo I found an electrical error that was made at the time of construction. Due to cross wiring some fuses could be live even with the disconnects in the off position. After testing I left the switches off and warned the property manager of the risk.

Later I was asked to turn the system back on. I sent an email that I refused to repower a system I thought that dangerous. I also sent a blind copy to the contractor that serviced the building. He got the job of reworking the system, $400.

Well was finally able to cancel my flight credits to Poland. With everything that's going on, I anticipate 2021 to be a **** show still and I'm not willing to go through that. We pay for 3 tickets (plus baby which is just tax) and we get dinged $300 x 4 to cancel. Better than nothing I guess.

They offered us a 100% voucher good for an additional 2 years, but I'll take my losses and deal with it when the time comes. Who knows if that airline (LOT) will actually survive this season.

Once we are vaccinated can we ditch the masks and start hanging out with friends again? Or is it going to be, hey your vaccinated but there is a new strain so the vaccine is now useless like what happens with the normal flue shot?

Lol.

They should write code in red ink, so people remember its was written in blood

It may only prevent you from getting the worst of it, you can still contract covid.
And more importantly spread it. Dont expect much to change with masks until next fall.

Also think about the spike if not wearing a mask became socially acceptable and every anti-mask crazy immediately began wandering around stores coughing on everyone.

The mask rules need to stay in place until herd immunity is approached. I would say herd immunity is reached, but I dont know how to confirm we are there or if we can get there once the anti vax and cant vax people dont get the shot.

Isnt South Africa one of the places where they tested the vaccines?

Now we have a new covid virus version.

When does the zombie mutation of the virus happen?
