Cars and Excessive Rolling Stops

What is it with cars doing these excessive "rolling stops"? I'm talking about the cars down the road making right hand turns into your lane. It's not like they're even trying to stop anymore -- they're doing full speed right turns through stop signs or red lights with only a brief look to see if there's any traffic. I always have an escape route and think I had to jump into the next lane at least 5 times this past weekend because cars just don't fully stop at right hand turns anymore. I think it's gotten worse over the year or so. And those cars making u-turns from the left turn lane in the middle of an intersection -- that ticks me off too. Just venting. :)
 
I've noticed this quite a bit lately. Nobody, but nobody stops at stop signs or red lights anymore.
 
Pretty much symbolic of the general deterioration of driving habits/skills. Not to pull the "Old Guy" card, but back in the day drivers would at least make some sort of effort to stop at signs and traffic lights....even ambers.
 
I don't care if someone rolls into my lane ahead of me when they're supposed to stop. As long as they're not impeding anyone who has the right of way, I say go for it. I do it all the time. But I won't force someone to take evasive action, or even cause them to feel concerned that we're too close (but that's the same behaviour as when I come to a full stop).

For me, stopping is optional, but the right of way must be strictly respected.

due to the road design here, there are too many stop signs, and 4 way stops. A lot of other countries use "Give Way" or "Yeild" rules rather than a stop. Essentially, thats what our stop signs have become here.

The problem is way too many traffic lights and stop signs are used in places where yield signs would more than suffice. People are getting tired of having to come to a stop every 100ft, and rightfully so, especially in areas with so little traffic.

One stop every 5km? You'll stop. One stop every 5 seconds? You start to roll through them.
 
There's a shopping plaza near me that has a four-way intersection. Three of them have stop signs, the other has a yield sign.

I use it a lot but I have no idea what the rule is. Do I yield to anyone in the intersection? Do I yield to anyone who's at a stop sign? Do I hold my place until all other traffic has cleared, or do they clear the way for me? Note that they almost always assume I have a stop sign so apart from being unclear to those who approach the yield side of the intersection, it's also misleading to everyone else.
 
Wow - never seen a 4-way intersection with 3 stops and 1 yield. If you're on the yield, I would think the following:
- If there's a car already going through the intersection, you need to yield.
- If all other stop signs are free of cars, you can just go through without fully stopping.
- If a car just pulled up to a stop sign or is fully stopped at a stop sign, you can go through without fully stopping.
Do I fail the road test? ;)
 
I was in a friend's car, she's a lot younger than me. When she came to turning right at a red light intersection, she didn't stop or even pause. I asked her why she didn't stop before turning? She believed stopping before a red light right turn wasn't legally necessary. I told her to look it up.

lol.. where did she get her licence? ;-)

Its like a lot of people now dont shoulder check because the newer vehicles have cameras and lane indicators.. so they just trust them..
 
Noticed that on the weekend while passing cars with blind spot indicators on the side mirrors. Somewhat reassuring that those things light up as you go by them.
 
I notice majority of folks around here use strictly their side-view and rearview mirrors when they're reversing for whatever reason. In nyc and for the majority part of the States we always place our right hand behind the passenger seat and turn our entire body when reversing - significantly more effective too. But on the plus side here we get to turn right on a right - something that should be implemented everywhere!
 
Motorcycles tend to be worse.
Everyone thinks that they've balance on there bike for a split second,
and can therefore disregard yielding to anyone else, because of their acceleration.
But if you look carefully, you'll notice that their wheels never stopped turning.
It's ironic, because motorcyclists constantly complain about others not yielding the right-of-way,
they are among the most vulnerable of road users, and yet they disregard the rules that they want others to follow.
I like to get my foot down, and look both ways, just like when I was kid crossing the street.

Anyway, it's not caused by having too many stop signs.

There are way fewer stop signs here, and yet people blast right through,
as if they haven't noticed the stop signs or red lights.

It seems to be more about the me factor, my rights, and my needs.
I need to get there a.s.a.p., even if it's to work, and you have no right to want me to stop. :p

A good many newer vehicles have atrocious rearward visibility, making it pointless to look out the back window. High trunk line, mail-slot rear window, etc.

Issue isn't confined to newer vehicles, because trucks, SUVs, and vans have always had bad rearward visibility. In a big truck or van you are TOTALLY reliant on your mirrors.

I have a van, with the fortunate benefit of new technology ... back-up camera. You are still very reliant on mirrors but at least the camera shows what's behind.

Traffic lights are typically placed (added) at an intersection which was originally controlled by a stop sign in one or more direction at which repeated collisions occurred; stop smashing and there won't be more traffic lights added.

The increased occurrence of stop signs has been an ineffective method of trying to control speeding in residential areas by the government. If people didn't constantly speed, there wouldn't be as many stop signs.

As for your comment about too many stop signs causing rolling stops; do you even know what a rolling stop is? When I see a driver performing an actual rolling stop I am impressed (due to rarity) as typically drivers travel at 60-65 km/hr in a 40 km/hr zone slow to 40-45 km/hr at a stop sign and continue thru. Is that your definition of a rolling stop?

This is directed at the posters who think that they are too important and can't spare the time to stop; how about at least performing an "actual" rolling stop?

Meh, I stop at ALL stop signs and red lights. Good to stay in practice because if I go back to Aus with the bad habbits drivers here have Id lose my license in less then a week. In Aus the stop sign means STOP (dead still) for at least 3 seconds, and cops actually book you the moment they see you take off before the 3 seconds is up. On a motorbike you have to actually stop and put a foot on the ground before taking off again.
 
I've noticed it too around the city, I've had a few drivers cut me off walking across the street and its just like dude WTF! I'm pretty habitual in my stopping unless I'm in a serious rush and I have no around. I cant afford to get any tickets. I generally go both feet down for at least 2-3 seconds at stop signs and right on reds. Like i said- I can't afford the tickets. NVM I want to maintain good habits through this season to next for my M test..
I used to be bad when I road my R1.
