Buying a used BMW Car

Those that love them and report nothing more than "normal" maintainance, have not revealed how much that cost them.

I guess they rely on people like me who are not sending back used brake pads or oil. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Even if their policy allows it.

My wife’s ‘08 is250 Lexus costs more then that.

I’ll look up my last oil change since we use the same place.

There seems to be a lot of focus on BMW service cost in this thread and not much on handling, driveability, accident avoidance and overall safety. What's a serious accident or perhaps your life worth?

Is bmw substantially better than others on those fronts? Ime, the car makes a difference in feel but the weak link in handling on almost every vehicle is tires and few people are running the best handling rubber. I'll put my money on an econobox on ps4s over a bmw on all seasons in most handling tests. Sure, it will wallow like a pig and feel bad but it should have a better time/higher speed.

Depending on your budget, I'd really try to make a 440i work. The B58 motor in that model is extremely robust; it's actually based on a diesel engine and has a closed deck design. BMW has been using the B58 in a bunch of their cars and was also co developed with Toyota for use in the new Supra.

Long before the current supra came out, the 35i N54/55 motors were referred to as the new 2jz's in the aftermarket scene etc...
Makes you wonder if Toyota got wind of it and decided to run with it?

I bought a pristine CPO 328 xDrive GT from Budds with 60k km with 3 year full warranty (paid extra 3k for that). It has 80k on it now,No issues so far, service cost surprisingly same as my Odyssey. But that's juts regular oil and filter change. I wouldn't buy a European car from private party.

My buddies wife had an X3, he use to call it the Bavarian Manure Wagon …BMW for short.
That's a new one. Haven't heard that one before.

The problem is after a hard night, it could be running on empty. No fluids causes more damage.
Went to check out a BMW 135 M-Sport once (N55(?) motor not the troublesome N54(?)). It was that sexy blue, low mileage, and in fairly good shape. Price was OK also (16k).

Drove great, and everything checked out.

'Low engine oil'. 'Replace immediately'.

'How long has that light been on?'
'Not sure, about 3-4 months'.
'Why haven't you replaced it?'
'I'll let the buyer deal with it. No need to do an oil change if I'm selling it right?'

I still regret letting that thing get away...but I was too scared of going down that rabbit hole.

If he was confident of no issues I would have paid for an inspection under the agreement that your money is returned if it was in fact going to be a problem. Otherwise it was non refundable deposit towards purchase.

Finding ways to find sellers who are serious to sell is not too difficult.
