Buying a used BMW Car

Scanning is not my only concern. My main concern is these cars appear to be throwaway cars designed to last ten years or 150,000 km's. Kind of like the phone market...planned obselecence. We are also looking at Audi A4's. The 2012's we've looked have rusted undercarriages and even fenders.
The biggest question should be how the car was maintained. I doubt a 428 owner would care about the car enough to go extra mile to maintain it. BMWs serve long with preventive maintenance and die quickly if maintenance is ignored.

Enlighten everyone on the "proper BMW software" that is 100% legit and properly licensed and most importantly free (just need a cable)??????
Well, those who care about a "legit" option can pay $$$ to BMW: TisUI

Those who just need to take care of their own car can ignore some formalities. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well then what was your nonsensical comment about on my post saying that was an option,... Sounds like a clone/bootleg/hacked version to me....!

Her Mitsubishi Eclipse GT-P is a great car....the parts are becoming hard to find tho. Finding an alternative to the Eclipse which is a car that just worked has proven to be more difficult than I expected.

Clearly you're a BMW guy and know your stuff which is exactly what I wanted to hear. I have a Nissan guy. I have an Audi guy. I don't know any BMW mechanics. Your input is much appreciated.

She's also looking at Lexus but wants a Coupe in front wheel or AWD.

Hyundai Genesis might have been an option, but she doesn't want a RWD car.

The Infinity G37 looked like a good option but rusted at 2012 and the transmission felt like something out of an old Cadillac Fleetwood. You could count three seconds before it would shift. And she wants an automatic.

She looked at an Altima. Cheap.

The options out there aren't great.

I own an old BMW (e46 M3), it's my 1st German/premium car after a string of Japanese sporty cars. Driving experience is superb, but I can safely say I don't think I'll be a repeat BMW owner. As @Evoex stated, BMW does seem to love to over-engineer, which is a PITA since I wrench on my own cars, and the actual material quality of some of the parts (even oem) can be shockingly poor. Aftermarket replacement parts are reasonably priced, but the oem-only parts can kill your wallet. I can only assume the more recent models like the 4-series have only made things worse by being way more complicated.

If you're weary of BMWs, then stay far, far, far away from used Audis; it's German complexity dialed up to 11, and then it's all crammed in so that even routine issues can mean tearing half the car apart to get to.

For the premium experience, but driving fun isn't the priority, then you really can't go wrong with a Lexus.

My wife insists she wants one...a 4 series... her current Mitsubishi Eclipse GT-P is getting up in km's and starting to die. She's not used to car repairs as the Eclipse didn't break, and whatever did break I was able to repair it quite easily. Parts are becoming harder to find for Mitsubishi Eclipse now as they stopped making them in 2012...so whatever is left in the aftermarket is what's left, period. The 4 series BMW has caught her eye. I know this company is very proprietary and these cars have their issues and require scan tools that no one can get their hands on...so I won't be able to help her should it break. They all seem to be dumping them at ~ 130,000 km's... and that's what she wants to buy. Any used car guys out there? Would appreciate input.

Thanks in advance.

I took a gamble in buying a BMW bike once upon a time, yes, it was a joy..... when it didn't need parts or repair.

I knew right away, when they charged me $35 for a simple oil pan drain BOLT, that I was going to be in for a joy ride with BMW dealer.

luckily all the other repairs were covered under warranty, and glad I didn't keep in long term.

Slightly off topic, 'cos this is about a BMW repair shop that I have used. Not as expensive as a dealer and with the expertise and equipment.

(I haven't been there recently as I have switched my ride to the American pony car)

It has "4" right in the name ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That's like telling someone a ZX6R is a 600cc model, same as the 650R.

one is a street bike and the other is a rocket ship with mirrors and lights!

let's not even talk about the difference in price, average joe is not dropping bread on the m4. 440i was around $75k if i recall, already a stretch for most.

I can't speak to the newer cars, but my 2001 E46 M3 has been wonderful to 300,000 km's, and I've had no major issues. I've had to replace a few things outside of regular maintenance, like the oil level sensor and alternator, but there's a case to be made that they're also wear and tear items. The best part about BMW ownership is that there are internet sites full of die hard enthusiasts that do all my research for me. I've never come across a problem that nobody's heard of, and better yet, hasn't already created a DIY for. Also, parts are incredibly/relatively cheap if you consider that there are SO many OEM parts available. Contrast that to the Subaru forums I'm on for my other vehicles, and there's a night and day difference in being able to find information on a non-STi or WRX model.

The biggest problem with BMW ownership is poor maintenance. That includes blindly following the factory maintenance intervals:

That said, if you can't/don't work on your own vehicles, paying a dealership or even a GOOD independent mechanic isn't cheap. A good indy shop probably charges out similarly to a Japanese dealership. For me, since I do all the work except for engine internals, the maintenance cost for my M3 is actually about the same as my Acura MDX or Subaru Impreza (non-WRX/STi), because most of the parts I can get as OEM, whereas the other two I have to buy original. And no, I refuse to use aftermarket parts.

Here's $600 US labor to get at a $4 gasket:

Whats with all the oil leaks from these German engineered cars? You would think they'd be bulletproof and oil leaks would not be a thing for this kind of money. Most ads for them indicate several "oil leaks repaired by dealer."

I feel sorry for his customer too, if he's charging her $1200/hr.

Here's a 27 minute video with diagnosis and full explanation of each step along the way to fix this problem:
