Boat Rentals

Well, hey, I guess we’re doing it wrong as we’ve been doing a 35’er in about 60 minutes for close to 10 years now.

Hull blasting is someone else’s job and admittedly no included in that time But it’s not getting a 6 hour wash, that’s for sure.

Zincs are a quick inspection. Yep, they’re there. Replace when needed. Doesn’t seem to need them regularly.

It doesn’t get shrinked as it’s stored inside, and at a place near enough to the marina that the top doesn’t even need to come off or even be folded down.

I don’t count repairs like bellows and such as part of winterization, those are repairs. Separate line entry.

Sounds like this is one of the differences between “fancy yacht club owner with deep pockets” vs “owner operator willing to get hands dirty and not throwing money around” marina boat owners.

🤷‍♂️
You can do a quick and dirty, but you said they’re doing that for $5k a year. That doesn’t add up.

Slip and storage at Scugog is $4500 for a 30’ if you have a trailer. Cheap Oil, filters, antifreeze is going to be $150. A pressure wash on a 30’ is going to be $6/lft below the waterline and .50 above. That’s another $450. If you don’t own a trailer, add another $400 lift & launch.

Winter maintenance includes inspecting and servicing critical systems. This include drive seals and bearings, zincs, cable linkages, at haul out. Otherwise yours looking at outrageous repairs if those item fail in season.

Bottom paint is a 3 year max plan, $30/lft is another $1000, or $330/year.

You’re storing unwrapped, so you can defer the cleaning cost till spring, either way it’s still part of annual maint costs.

You can do cheap, quick and dirty winterizations. Skip a hull cleaning, pay 20% more in fuel. Skip rotating system maintenance, you will pay with in season downtime and 3x repair costs. Fool yourself by not accounting for the incendentals and it all works!

When you hear the bad stories about heavy boat ownership costs, they are always linked to poor or cheap and dirty maintenance.

Even reciprocals at Yacht clubs are changing, true reciprocity hasn’t existed for years and now popular places like Niagara on the lake or Picton give you the second night free and ding you $3 a foot night one . But sitting on the deck at RCYC on Toronto island is special, looking at Toronto skyline at night . When you have travelled a ways and can stop at port credit and use the pool and get a beer , it’s nice . And we use it when we travel , many places like Royal Barcelona YC have the best patios in the city . St Petersburg YC in FLA is a beautiful place . You can have great community in any marina , the YC experience is portable , it works for us .

Been 2 years since I dropped my memberships. Before that, I never had a problem just showing up at most clubs on Lake Ontario.

Couldn’t get reciprocals in FL unless advance letters were sent, often those got no reply. Nice thing is if you belong to a decent golf club in FL, you get drop in privileges at almost every yacht and strip club on the Gulf and the Atlantic coast.

I’ve overnighted in LYC and golfed at Doral next day based on a golf membership in Toronto.

Guess I’m going boating this week , friend bought a Bayliner 32 fly bridge in some marina in the swamp at the bottom of Simcoe and wants to move it up to Orillia. Asking was 26k and they settled on 17k . Apparently she was in the water , initial test run was perfect and it appears as almost new condition. Very weird , in talking he told me the sellers name and turns out we knew each other from my time selling power tools . Small world . Gonna needs a toque and sunscreen next week .

22 degrees again on Tuesday apparently. Perfectly passable boating weather. And riding too lol.

Other than the typical US marine dashboards and cabinetry they are great boats.

Most of those boats have twin Hinos - some have twin 454s. The diesels are easy on fuel and are known to go for 10000+hrs. Diesels get over 2mpg at 9knots on a clean bottom boat. Gas… 1mpg @8knots.

You're gonna have some beautiful boating weather on Simcoe in the next week or two. Just watch the wind forecast, but you know that. Yesterday it was rough as hell.

Another vote for having a boat on the Trent vs Ontario or Simcoe - the water is always pretty flat on the Trent lakes. Even the long N-S lakes like Sturgeon and Pigeon that are subject to a lot more wind wave creation really never get that bad.

I was always told Bayliner was a bit of a lower end boat , but looking close at the photos it just looks like an average cruiser , like Cruiser boats or Trogian . And for 90% that’s fine . This one has 454 mercruiser fitted , which may be part of the lowered price . It will move slowly . Buddy went yesterday aft and topped up both tanks , I asked on the phone what that costs , he wouldn’t say over the phone in case his wife has a phone tap on him. I think we will do the run Tue’s/ Wed , it’s been really windy for the last couple days . It’s not a long trip but I’d like to enjoy it .

To the original thread of renting. Sorry but renters don't get the same respect as owners. Rental houseboats are at the bottom of the list.

Hunh - talking about Bayliners and fall weather brought back memories.
October 30th and the kids and I were out on Stoney Lake in short sleeves.
I think that was the year I rode motorcycle every month...maybe 1998...the year that busted all the climate records and cooked the reefs here.....this before I met my current squeeze.
Had a 15' Bayliner with a 50 hp outboard and it was sooooo easy to handle in and out of the water.
Got the urge to move up and a few boats later had a 22' Bayliner inboard.....thus ended my boating phase.
Wonder where those photos are?
Buddy has the same boat still.....and sent me a photo of the pair.

Good memories of when there were actual fish to catch

Barramundi is the equivalent fish here, tastes fantastic but unlike a pickerel puts up a very credible fight. Grows much larger and fav croc food. So certain precautions in order when shore fishing

The early Bayliners had a bad reputation for durability but being lighter they didn’t need as much power as a similar size Searay, making it lighter again. Blasting along with the Donzi crowd was hard on them.

The early ones came in blue and grey or grey and blue. Your choice.

That only matters if the renters actually care, which they usually don't as they're out to have fun, not to impress anyone.

Like how some Harley owners turn up their nose at the Metric riders, if the Metric riders give zero F's at the end of the day, well, it's all irrelevant.

When I was flying and renting I got along OK with the rest at the club but it upped a lot when we bought our own plane. A lot of that was from doing the $100 hamburger flights to other airports.

It was hard for renters to book that much time on a plane without paying massive standby charges

No longer houseboat renters on the bottom it’s “skippery “ the boat share program that’s in Toronto harbour and Hamilton harbour, Oakville refused them space . You get a $29 PCOC card and rent a 20ft bow rider or similar in the fleet . No clue about channel markers, speed limits , ROW or the fact you need a Toronto harbour license for ANY boat and Toronto harbour extends out into Humber Bay . At least with a houseboat you mostly just annoy people, these guys are a bit dangerous in the level of training not required .

How does a company get insurance for something that high risk?

How does a company get insurance for something that high risk?

Good question. I can’t imagine theres a “facility association” for boats where “if you can afford it, you’re legally entitled to be able to receive it” like road vehicles.

How does a company get insurance for something that high risk?
Do they get insurance? Company A owns the boats and rents them to Company B and requires Company B to insure them. Company B rents them to uninsured morons (maybe as part of the rental contract says they need insurance). When the crash happens, Company B points to the Skipper and has no assets so it's not worth suing. Company A is a few levels away and was never directly involved with the Skipper.

The PWC/Jet Ski/SeaDoo rentals make Skipperi look super pro. A colleague was telling me about how he rented some with a group of friends, and they basically took a credit card and handed them the keys. Zero training, no PCOC, no info on where to go, just tap the Visa and off you go.

They must have been absolute menaces, because they roused the harbies from their slumber (and/or ogling the pretty girls at Harbourfront) enough to get stopped and ticketed. Considering the insanity that lot largely turn a blind eye to, it would have had to be really bad.

They were shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, that they needed any sort of certificate, and headed straight back to the rental place to complain about the fines. The rental guy apparently laughed and said something about caveat emptor while collecting the keys.

While I got a sweet dose of schadenfreude from being told that story, the reality is it's only a matter of time before a kid on a rented PWC kills somebody in the harbour. Odds are it'll be a collision with a pontoon water taxi that's also ripping through the bay at 30 knots, piloted by a teenager...

A rental guy tried to set up jetski PWC rentals in Oakville , nope , no business permit for him. Nobody needs that here .

The TOharbour water taxis are a bit of a menace , speed limits optional , meanwhile the two private ferries RCYC operate are like an institution, calm , civilized, total professionals.
