Bikes with character...

If MP wants to pile on the miles, he doesn't need to worry about belts on that one. You have 24 months or ~30K km before they need to get done again.

I think that one will be a tough sale. It's obviously a nice bike and not worn out but over $10K and a decade old is a rough market for private sales.

I talked him into getting new belts last year. Tires are oem tho.

Way too much power, and way too much price for my needs.

@Baggsy good point about the 100+ hp. The MT09 was too stupidly fast for my needs/wants in Mode 2 (whatever HP that gets you. Mode 1 is highest.

BUT...the 821 was oodles more comfortable than the 796. I liked the 796, I enjoyed the power of the 796 but the seat was painful...

Indeed @Baggsy has a good point. If you can't get it done with 100HP you might be doing it wrong.

I think Mode 2 is still full power, just slightly tamer throttle response. You need to go down to Mode 4 for power restriction.

Wingboy, you and MP talk him down to $9-9500 then go buy it. Don't think about it, just buy. I've ridden the same bike and adore it. Rated 145hp but really more like 125-130hp and it's a V-Twin and not peaky at all. Easy usable power that doesn't feel silly.
Here's a comparo:

No let's not do that. That'll cost me 2k/year in insurance and i'm def not interested in that.

I'm not part of the GTAM ballers club.

Going from an arm ripping 25lbs torque and 42 hp on a CB500 to triple that on a1200S could be intimidating.

At 1200S delivers more torque at 1500rpm than a 500X at peak.

Someone earlier was looking for a Z650RS.

Step away from Japan. Europe is more interesting. Also, anytime a seller puts "rare" in the description, they are cookoo for coconuts and will probably be severely overpriced. Every bike in Canada is rare. There aren't that many sold.

Old motorcycles are not as valuable in Canada as they are in the US, and way less than they would cost in the UK.

I'm thinking about thinning the hear this winter. I see plenty of 'rare' bikes, not all of them are desirable for collectors, some not-so-rare bikes are sought by collectors. Also noticed Canadian prices seem much lower than US prices -- not sure why.

We get to ride them less and have few options to cheaply insure a fleet here. I would have no problem signing a declaration that I was the sole insured rider if that meant I got the fleet at most expensive plus $100/bike for paperwork instead of adding up all policies like they do in Ontario now.

The wife rides a regular Z650. It feels nice and light, and fairly peppy. She would definitely have bought the Z650RS instead if it had been available at the time.

That being said, it's not a huge difference in character from the Honda 500's that you've been riding.

It's the opposite for Harley's ... a couple of places here routinely go to the US and pick up HD's cheap to sell up here.
