Best dual sport or something along those lines?

He does have the right mods/accessories. Add a skid plate and rad guards and go. In 2011, I sold my 2007 drz400s with a ton of off road goodies with 21k for $3900. It was January, he was a friend, he had to move a mountain of snow to get it out of storage to his truck! Lol

Sorry, didn't really answer you. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a drz with 20k on it, if it's been cared for. Offer him $4000, stick to it. They come up on kijiji all the time.

Re 100kph plus on the WR - If you have to do lots of highway riding, a WR is probably not a great choice (nor is a DRZ) but Ive heard that they're similar on the highway. The WR is aided by its 6th gear (although it wont help you go faster). Lots of people take both bikes on the highway and tolerate it fine.

And there is a big aftermarket for the WR. Not sure if its as big as the DRZ (probably not) but its big.

But yes, 400 is a bigger engine than 250 so you have a bit more torque. What you dont have is FI, a modern frame, the 6th gear, etc....

Dude. This is crazy. Just buy a pickup truck and a non-street legal dirt-only 50cc funster and have at it. You say all the time that this is only for with the kids. Kids don't want to do stuff as much as you think they do. I don't think you will like riding on dirt tires on the road after coming from a SS. Don't set yourself up for unrealistic expectations especially with the kids.

I live with a 9 year old.

Hahaha yes but I also have 3 adults who ride the ganny regularly and I would love to hit it up just with the sometimes...50 wont cut it. I dont care about the big ss's anymore as they are useless to me, but I do think the DRZ would be a fun bike from what I have seen, and I can still hit the trails.

You are right neither bike is highway friendly, no question about it. I personally preferred the 400cc passing power if I needed it, especially when terrain get's a bit up and down .... if that bike had 6th gear, it would be very good .... but the 6th gear will not happen as long as Suzuki is selling them as well as they do (and that will keep happening until someone else starts selling better bike for the money average person is willing to pay).

I am still perplexed as to why Yamaha doesn't come out WR400X version ... it's not like it would need whole lot to turn that engine design into 400 cc version or 450. Maybe they know they cannot compete with price Suzuki set for DRZ ... so they simply gave up.

I should say that you are probably right about the aftermarket ... when I was looking at the bike 3 years or so ago there was nothing, except for slip-on .... it will never be as big as DRZ, but that doesn't mean it's bad or insufficient now.

There's an 07 sm nicely farkled, 13k on Hamilton kijiji. $4500, hit him lower, see what happens. I'd buy that in a heartbeat if it was an "s" model...

I emailed it when it was first posted... I offered $3500 and he said he wants more... he was nice though and said if it doesnt sell in a week or so then would consider my offer. I am in no rush, so will see what happens.

Very cool bike but stick with the Japs. The farthest I'd go to the more "rare" stuff would be KTM.

Apparently these are better then ktm from what I have been reading... alot less maintenance needed.

Not sure what you're reading then. All this BS about KTM's being a lot of maintenance is either old wives tales, or people trying to use race motor KTM bikes and comparing them to long life non-race motor Jap bikes (like a 250SX-F against a CRF250L, yep the 250SX will be more maintenance, of course it also has way way way more power....)

The bigger issue is dealer parts and service network for Husky will be way worse than KTM and virtually non-existent compared to Jap bikes.

Based on all of the posting in this thread it seems to me you really should be getting the DR400SM. So just bite the bullet and buy a brand spanking new one and go enjoy 2014!

Husky/ ktm are the same. High performance bikes that require more frequent maintainence. Will it cost more than a drz long term? Propably, but it's not going to bankrupt you. If you know how, or can learn to do your own valve checks etc. it is no big deal. That 510 is a fun bike with a good reputation. It has pretty good power, so tire choice will be very important off-road. Last but not least, the huskies are just so sexy!

would 4 grand for that bike be fair? i talked to him and said the first motor blew up and had to get a whole new motor from husky and it cost over 3 grand just for that. he has the receipts and since the new engine, has only put about 5 hours on it.
