Audi buying ducati!! wow

I'm gonna go on a limb and say that increase in sales % is more important than overall volume to any one company.

You wouldn't compare volume between BMW and VW. It's meaningless.

Back to remedial math classes for you, son.

We're trying to tell you that you're a clueless fanboy ;)

Isn't Ducati Italian? How is the Ducati Brand better off being consumed by the Germans? If Ducati is in Trouble they should make a deal with piaggio/vespa/Aprilia and keep their brand Italian.

First Germany Bailling out Greece, now the Germans are bailling out Ducati. Where will it end? :)

Italians are great at making beautiful bikes, but lousy at making money. The Italian government and Cagiva owned Ducati during the 70s and 80s and neither could turn a profit.

Here is someone that knows some history of Ducati (motorcycle)... which is/was not the same company as Ducati (electrical) before WWII.
Ducati started making bikes right after WWII, and hasn't stopped since. It has come close many many times.
Ducati financial history is NOT pretty.
Their current idea, straight from Harley Davidson, is to sell " the experience" not the bike. WHAT A LOAD 'O CRAP!
The last REAL Ducati was the Darmah 500... then Cagiva came into the picture... been downhill ever since.

Why would you get your bike serviced at an Audi dealer? Do you get it serviced by an Ontario teacher now... or by Silvio Berlusconi? (That would explain the price)

What in the world are you blabbing about??? Unlike Harley, Ducati actually builds good, competitive motorcycles (both in racing and market terms)

Why they can't turn a profit is a reflection of poor management, not of poor products.

Competing in Motogp which is a very expensive venture along with selling fewer bikes than their competitors ( Japanese and BMW) has an impact on the company bottom line. Yes you are right they make good products but so does the rest of the motorcycle industry make good products also, the level of performanceis marginal for the average motorcycle list which. I do not believe that buying a Ducati makes the average rider a better rider plus the price of Ducati puts it into an elite class which means it is not for everyone which means less volume.

As for the Harley it is based upon the brand that is why Harley is so popular, I was trying to find the article with Steve Jobs when he came back to apple he wanted Apple to have the same brand power as Harley Davidson. Like them or not they are popular selling bike with a select market segment which happens to have a lot of disposable income this is why they are successfull it is about the Brand and not the performance

Having the most advance bike does not mean success when you have a smaller market to sell your product. Two ways to increase profitability sell a lot of bikes at lower margin or sell fewer bikes with higher margin combined with lowering your operating cost makes you profitable.

Or they couldn't sell enough t-shirts and trinkets like Harley does.

There has been several really good Italian bike manufacturers that have gone away since WW11.
And several German bike manufacturers that have gone away since WW11.

Its the evolution of industry.

Couple Japanese manufacturers have gone away also.

Ducati is almost a bigger lifestyle brand than Harley, check out Ducati World Bike Week in Italy, every 2 years thousands show up for a weeklong festival of bands, track testing, fashion shows and parting like rock stars. Its truly awesome.
Never seen the Japanese big 4 ever pull off anything remotely close.

For the record, the Darmah500 was OK, the 900SS was the best thing they ever built and hiring Paul Smart for a one time GP ride was genius when nobody else would touch it.

Not sure how competive Ducati is in the market when it sounds like they could file for bankrupcy? Harley isn't competetive in their market?

Harleys appeal to "Harley guys". Generally, if you are indifferent to the brand, you won't buy one. You'll get more value elsewhere.

Ducati, like all OTHER manufacturers, create motorcycles for many different segments of the market. Small naked bikes, hooligan streetfighters, sport/adv tourers, muscle cruiser, supersports, etc etc. AND their products are very well received in the motorcycling community as a whole. The reputation and the products are both strong.
