At track power options

What bugs me about generators is that no matter how many people spring for the quiet inverter type, there will always be "that guy" (usually more than one) at the track who has a 3000W non-inverter type that can be heard clear across the track. So we can't win. haha...

I've got a 3200 for the camper. It's loud. Deal. :)

That type of attitude might result in a middle-of the night unplugging/shut down. Not that I would ever do such a thing, but I've seen/heard others do it or be victim of it.

That's how some people "deal".

I don't leave my generator on after 10:30. Because that's asinine.

A good generator is what $2000-3000 that puts you at 50-100 track days depending on which numbers you use. Or in other words a few years before you could have bought your own generator.

I picked up a BNIB Honda EU2000i for $1000 all in, good deals are out there, you just have to hunt for them.

Anyone running a generator at a track after 10 p.m. is asking for trouble. Either the cord will be cut or something worse.
It's just plain rude and inconsiderate to run a genny at night. As for buying the cheapest genny and getting the longest cord, that's just dumping your loud crap on someone else unless it's hidden in the bush which is not likely. Building a quiet box for the genny with all the money you saved is an option......

I've been to Jennings where they have outlet for each pit stall. So nice not to hear a bunch of genny's running all day. And you can imagine the convenience of it at night for lighting, PC's or heat if needed.

October round of SOAR, nighttime temps were near freezing.
Yup, lots of gennys ran all night. Luckily for me, my buddy allowed us to plug into his 3500 watt Yamaha inverter genny that is nearly silent, so we had electric heat.

Had a Hyundai inverter that was nice and quiet and cheap on fuel, but unreliable, for a yr. Then when it couldn't counted on anymore, I cheaped out and grabbed a used Coleman from another racer. It lasted one round before seizing up solid.
Yamaha inverter coming for next season.

Then we'll get along just fine :)

lol Like I said, before lights out, people can run whatever they have.

I want to upgrade to an enclosed trailer this year and get some basic electric heat (won't need much), so even if I pre-warm the trailer I should survive the night.

What type of electric heater do you use?

I slept in a tent beside some champion POS with a garbage can and my truck infront of it with earplugs in. It ran all night but I was able to sleep....just.

Bart used to bring a huge 6500 watt non inverter....he had a plywood 3 sided box with a lid for it, and the inside was covered in corrugated eggshell type foam. The back side that faced away from the pits was left open so the genny always had air and let the exhaust fumes out. He would run a 100 ft ext cord to it, and it really was barely audible to us. He said the panels and foam didn't cost him $50. Well worth the time and money to make the box if you have a non inverter I think.

Let go what you can't control. There is no way someone isn't going to show up with a loud genny so control what YOU can. Set up further away. Earplugs. Those options you can control and maybe it won't bug you as much.

I didn't express how much it bugs me, just that it bugs me. I'm not holding onto it, I was just saying... The reality is that it bugs me very little. I'm happy with my EU2000i. I'm doing what I can.

It bugs me as well, especially when "i was there/set up first" and someone came along squeezed nearby and put their genny 50 feet away from them, but only 20 feet away from me.

That's discourteous, but some people are ignorant... nothing you can do about that.

BUT going back on topic: there is no need or efficient way to find another power option. Tracks aren't open 24/7 so they won't be setting up for a huge power draw. That and most race organizations have members that are self sufficient.

If you're searching for alternative/natural energy sources, you'll need to use both solar power and get your own wind propeller/generator for when it's cloudy and windy :p

For campers and tents.... consider gas heaters. That's what is in my (last three) camper, and other than that I ran my battery down at Calabogie last time and had the gas alarm go off at 4am... it was all good. :lmao:

If I'm in an enclosed trailer, I would probably pre-heat the interior and then shut it off when I go to bed....... I don't want to catch fire or die of gas fumes or something LOL

1<3 this woman.

Don't let the little things get to you.

Agreed. I'm on the grass at grand bend for 2-3 nights..... there is no escape from the rattle boxes even if they are 30-50 feet from you.

I don't care about on-track time... everyone runs their generators. But after lights out? Almost unbearable if you have a clunker (and you'll get the reputation of being the clunker-buyer that annoys people overnight).

I slept 10 feet from my friends Yamaha 4000 and only woke up when it ran out of gas in the middle of the night (once). I'm a heavy sleeper, but I've been annoyed by the KRRRAAAAAAAAAARAAAAAAAARRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAA clunkers from crappy tire time and time again.

I have gotten up in the middle of the night, unable to get to sleep because of someone's BIG noisy generator that was running overnight (and there was no chance of putting it somewhere that wouldn't bother anyone, you could hear it in the WHOLE paddock), and went over to it with the intention of turning it off. I didn't ... only because I couldn't find the "off" switch.

Reminder to self: buy a LED flashlight for this purpose. And bring a bottle of water, in case someone gets the brilliant idea of starting up the generator again. Take one guess where that water would go.
