Anyone here a cyclist?

Is much of that in English?

Sub compact refers to the size of the crank? What’s the deal with that?

One thing I don’t like with my current bike is the flat bars. Also, how are seats these days? I don’t want to feel like I’ve been to a single gender orgy after a ride. Basically if it’s comfortable I’ll ride it.
Sub compact/compact refer to chain ring sizes. Full size is something like 42/52 teeth. The link you had was 32/48. 48 teeth is more than enough, you won't run out of gears any time it matters. Compared to full size crank, your leg speed would be about 10% higher in any given gear/speed but that's OK. You don't have the legs to cruise at 40+ and don't need gears that let you do that.

I bought a bike to turn into a SS that I could ride into town and leave locked up outside a pub. Number one requirement - had to be black on black with black accents.

Ooooooh, these Avid Ultimate Black-Ops brakes will look nice on it. I have some Syncros hub and Mavic ceramic rims sitting here. Theses OG Shimano DX BMX pedals will work. Oh yea, some black Pro Tapers. Carbon Flite? Sure. It's comfy and it is black. Why not. When I stepped back it was worth too much money to leave unattended. Well, I did try. Didn't pan out. :)

I tried a pink bike one year. Still got stolen. Painted one caterpillar yellow (poorly), stolen. Good parts go on good bikes that I never get off unless I'm at home. I can understand your progression but I was able to avoid it.

Ordered the Decathlon GRAVL subcompact bike after a chat with a local bike repair guy. He had an amazing used bike for sale, a really lightweight Giant but it wouldn’t take fenders or anything for commuting (his advice, nice guy, wasn’t pushy at all). I showed him the Décathlon and he said it looked like a good deal. He’ll tune it up for me and assemble it properly. Got an extra 14% off going through the Brim Mastercard e-shop.

Wife is worried about safety so there’s a deal on the Garmin Varia bike radar today so I ordered one with an integrated light that gives a warning of approaching cars and also changes the flash pattern of the light to alert drivers.

Now I just need a helmet, fenders, a rear rack and probably pedals.

Don't know what part of the GTA you are in..but the bike zone in mississauga has decent deals on helmets here and there.

I have a rear rack that ive been saying ill install for the past 2-3 years but haven't ...if you want it it's yours (wife likes it when i get rid of stuff i dont use ... maybe thatll get me brownie points for a new bike?) lol
Fender wise i like this style myself

ive been eyeing the GRAVL let me know how you like it!

since im going extra cheap for the commuter bike swap im thinking of getting this guy:
but it would require some fiddling around with duty and what not

Very kind offer thank you but I’m in Kingston.

I think full fenders will go better with a permanently attached rear rack. Pedals will be flat as the idea of clip/cleat things scare the crap out of me for some reason.

Fortnine has a bunch of pedal bike stuff on sale (didn’t know they did pedal bike gear) so I’ll probably get a helmet from there. Some really good discounts if you rummage through.

Ime, bicycle Helmet fit is more fiddly than motorcycle helmet fit as there is very little padding. A helmet that I wanted to buy did not work at all for my head shape and was painful. I would try helmets on at a bike store (or decathalon) and buy one that is comfortable. It will be expensive but it's only every 5 years. As with motorcycle helmets, once you find a brand that fits your head shape, it is normally pretty safe to buy that brand online in your size.

In my case specialized helmets fit me well and cat-like is a hard no for my head.

I love my flat pedal bike. The other 2 are clipless and by now, it's fine and second nature. But for riding in bumper to bumper traffic, flat pedal is superior for reaction time/instinct

So…this is a huge rabbit hole that I went down and it may have been obvious to cyclists but it wasn’t to me that you can get dual pedals. So I got some Shimano T8000 hybrid pedals and a pair of Adidas 5-10 clipless shoes on sale. So now I can try both.

I have dual pedals on my mtb right now (time atac speciale 12) as I was having a hell of a time unclipping with my bad ankle. Imo, they are worse than plain flats or clipless but for a commuter may be a reasonable option.

If you haven't try tuning them by adjusting pedal release tension and cleat position on the shoes you might find the sweet spot.

There were a lot of concurrent factors. Ankle injury made my well worn spd's an issue as clipping in hurt. Release on the atacs feels substantially different than spd. I'm not sure if I don't like it because I am used to a different feel or if it's worse. Biggest issue is pins to make flat pedals grippy wreak havoc when clipped in. Shoes/clips have some flex/movement so often shoes bind on pins which vastly alters release effort and feel. Setting the pins low enough that that problem is solved leaves you with really slippery flats. My current compromise is front pins only and rear pins completely removed.

Bike arrived. Pretty well packed with only the handlebar and pedals disconnected. There is a very small issue but Decathlon customer service have been excellent and very quick (24h) in sorting that out for me with a generous refund to cover costs of sorting it out. Night and day customer service difference compared to the Bayside Performance nightmare I had. I’d be confident in doing a lot more business with Decathlon after this.

The bike needs a tune but I’m having that done anyway in the next few days once some more bits and pieces arrive. The brake lever travel needs adjusting via the cables as the adjusters are maxed out and the shifting needs a bit of adjusting too.

The bike is very light (compared to what I had before). Shifters were weird as I’ve never had paddle style shifters before. Brakes got better after a couple of rides and I like them.

Waiting for a rear rack to arrive now.

The tires on the gravel bike I bought are “tubeless ready”. One of the things the guy will need to do that tunes my bike will be to switch over a tire that was put on backwards so is it worth switching to tubeless while he’s doing this? It just needs sealant and different valves apparently. Everything else is already in place.

Tubeless is great... most experienced avid cyclists will say go for it, game changer.

BUT for the average casual cyclist IMO it is more work and can be frustrating, I would keep the tubes in this context. The bike sits for a year and the sealant is dried up. The tires are flat after a couple of weeks (leak down) when you want to just go for a short ride. More maintenance, etc.

Depending on the bike I run some tubeless and some with tubes.

Not mine and sale is pending but I saw an ad for this and it's pretty awesome. I've never seen anything like it. Apparently a 1967 Eaton Glider. $1,800.

Does nothing for me.

Now, if it was a Sekine VX GTO I'd be interested. 70s cable operated front disc FTW. Only ever seen one IRL, and the guy wouldn't sell it to me. Took it on trade for handyman work. Had no idea what it was.
