Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

I think this may have more to do with the charging network than the cars themselves. I was road tripping in the US during the thanksgiving long weekend (busiest travel weekend of the year) and only once had to wait to use a supercharger. The CCS chargers I saw were all always in use with many cars waiting. It must absolutely suck to road trip in a non-Tesla EV on busy weekends. I wouldn't buy a non-Tesla EV now for that reason. But ask me again in a few years after the rest of the charging infrastructure catches up and the superchargers open up to non-Teslas and it'll be a different story.
Last I had heard, Tesla has opened their superchargers up to all? brands for use. People just need to get an appropriate adapter (if it exists).

Plenty of videos online of Tesla owners raging at other brands taking up a SC spot.

There would probably have been more stations online now to alleviate this issue had Musk not fired the entire supercharger team which was working on maintaining and expanding that network.

And then rehiring them all when he realized the consequences were kinda big.

Yep, what he said. My 2024 Polestar 2 is now compatible after I picked up an adapter ... tested it when I got it and (y) .

How you liking that Polestar?
Still loving it. The system runs on AAOS (Android Automotive Operating System, NOT the same as AA Android Auto btw) so if you're in with that ecosystem of phones like I am, it's cool to just say "Hey Google" and have it act on your commands no different than you would on a Google Mini at home, etc.. Of course, the commands are different so at home I can't say "turn seat heater to 3", etc like I can in the car.

There's an OTA update coming this week that will provide AA functionality so you can mirror your phones apps onto the screen.

AAOS has it's own set of Android apps in the car's screens but not all apps are available there that are on my phone (such as WhatsApp) although many are. I was waiting at the carwash line yesterday watching YouTube videos as an example.

Summer time range is typically 530 with winter low 400's (my version with the Plus Pack has a heat pump so I'd say I lose about 20% range ... with the Volt, no heat pump, I was losing about 1/3rd as I recall).

Have needed dealer level or independent service yet? If so how did that work out?

It’s a model that’s been in the back of my mind for a whilebut parts and service is a concern.

First service is after 1 year which will be early next month. Supposedly just a few checks and change wiper blades, no charge.

Only some superchargers are open to non-teslas, many are still tesla-only. But they're slowly upgrading them to support all EVs.

Valid point. I had to install the Tesla app and then you go in and it'll tell you which are available to you. When I check I see 7 locations available from Oakville to Oshawa. Not sure but I suspect the Tesla's have more than that available to them.

That number always varies wildly depending on the flavour of the news outlet that writes the articles.

The cost and lack of infrastructure argument is normally morons that should never have bought a BEV in the first place. If you can charge at home or work, they are great. If you plan on DC fast-charging only, the economics suck. If you can't charge at home and have a brain, you can hit a happy middle ground where you save the world, probably save a bit of money and not have too much inconvenience (L2 while shopping and similar). People that refuse to change how they operate are bad fits for most new technology.

That being said, I would not be surprised to see the numbers specific to North America, and the USA very specifically) trending higher against EV’s. There’s a war on them right now on both sides with them being presented as “Liberal treehugger greenwashing nonsense”, and the masses are buying that.

I’m not sure how that meshes with Musk being the defacto Vice President right now, but nothing south of the border makes sense anymore, so… <shrug>

The fact that gas is dirt cheap in the USA right now certainly isn’t helping the case as the savings arguments are not even there in many cases anymore either. This past fall while we were in West Virginia on the bikes we were paying $1/L, Canadian.

But on this side of the border, the math is still significantly different, particularly in places like BC and Quebec where driving on electric is a fraction of the cost of driving with gas. Same for many places around the rest of the world, or places where people are legitimately trying to get off oil instead of screaming “drill baby drill” and wanting to live in the past.

The way the survey question is asked can make a huge difference. "Will your next vehicle purchase be gas or electric" is a different question from "if you had to replace this vehicle, would it be gas or electric". Lots of people including myself have both.

Tuktoyaktuk got a Tesla charger. If you can get there, you can fill your battery. The charger is powered by a diesel generator.

Meh, if the electricity is cheaper than gas, for around town stuff, it probably still makes sense.

The car itself would have to be trucked in of course.

There must be something to it though, out of curiosity I looked on PlugShare and although far-flung for obvious reasons, EV chargers exist in a lot of surprising places.

The NHTSA may want to be careful stepping on Musk’s toes with inconveniences like this, next thing you know they could be shutdown by February as a “government cost savings” effort.

I wish I was joking.
