Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

So there's no more new Bolts from what I'm seeing. Was looking at those, and now they're all gone and replaced by the new EV (Equinox?).

Too bad. The Bolt had a good space v price.

But yet again...paralysis by analysis by MP. I only want new so I can lease the damn thing as I'm not sure if I want an EV long term considering the market shift recently.

A Cummins ISX15 engine, available in Class 8 trucks (tractor-trailer tractors), has between 400 and 605 horsepower depending on application. Does a pickup truck really need that much to tow the puny-by-comparison trailers that a Class G license-holder is legally allowed to tow?a

Back to EVs. I spotted a blue Silverado EV in the RST trim level at the GM dealer in Orangeville, parked amongst the regular T1XX trucks. The nose is notably lower and the hood slopes down more towards the front. And that is a GOOD thing.

This is the first Silverado EV that I've seen in anything other than black or white, which were all that was available at launch.
Torque is what matters in this context... HP calculated from torque--the formula is HP = (Torque X RPM)/5252. HP might sell cars/trucks but....

That Cummins (without looking at the specs) likely makes ~2,000 lb.ft of torque and that much way down low and those HP numbers could be at 1600 rpm. For the pickup they get the HP numbers at a much higher RPM and it is putting out no where near the same amount of torque anywhere in the power band. Without that torque the pick-up has nowhere near the pulling power.

For every torque (lb.ft)/HP curve
RPM > 5252 RPM, HP > Torque
RPM < 5252 RPM, HP < Torque
RPM = 5252 RPM, HP = Torque

In all honesty...the GTI is the first car that I actually feel vulnerable in since I started driving. It feels tiny.

I've had Sentra, Civis, Volts, Genesis Coupe, Hyundai Elantra and have never felt so small in comparison to other vehicles on the road.

It's one of the reasons I want a Maverick, or something bigger. I just feel tiny, and I don't want my kids to get injured if we get hit by one of those things. Especially the Cybertruck.

That thing will literally open up the GTI like a can opener. At least with a bigger car those high bumpers are closer to my mid-section instead of my head.
If they hit you in the side, regardless of the vehicle, you are in very bad shape. Airbags help but there just isn't much room to accelerate your head. VW normally holds up quite well in crashes. If you want to feel vulnerable, try the mini. No airbags, no structure, no weight, no crumple zones, 6" lower than gti, etc.

Size doesn't automatically equal safety.

Look at the SmartCar for example. 2 seater go cart. But despite everyone thinking it was a deathtrap in a crash, it actually had amazingly high crash test ratings.

It's this "I need a land yacht to be safe" thing that has led to every soccer mom driving a giant pickup truck around when in reality a 4 door sedan would actually be far more suitable for their needs.

I don't think that was the reaction people that paid 100K were hoping for.

Almost $140K is the cheapest option in Canada IIRC. Before taxes and all the other stuff.

Imagine paying almost $160,000 to drive one of these things around and get laughed at.

About 60k more than promised at launch. :(

Musk is the one laughing.

He's now the richest man in history at north of 300b.
Did he get paid yet? Wasn't he getting blocked.

Surprising nobody.

And? Wealthy people are often a**holes. He's the epitome of that.

I'd rather hang with someone worth $50 to their name and who is a good person than someone worth however many billions of dollars who would stab you in the back 30 seconds after you walked away if it meant they could make themselves another $100, or inflate their ego a little more at your expense.

Money can't make you a good person. You have to choose to do that bit. We've seen what Musk has chosen to become.

There is a Tesla "dealer" on Dundas between Kipling and Eastmall across from the old/closed Honeydale Mall. The parking lot of the closed mall is totally jammed with Teslas. Are all these waiting for delivery?? It is not unusual for high volume dealers to have large offsite storage, but I am not seeing much in the way of turnover in that lot.

There is a bunch of those ugly trucks at the dealer itself.

The next 6-12 months of sales reports for Tesla will be interesting. We’ll finally get a window into how badly the CT has flopped, and what the results on regular Tesla sales are now that Musk has gone full potato.

In unrelated news, I’m also adding “Can survive a water bottle thrown at it with probably no damage” (much less $3000 USD worth) to my Volts checklist.

Wasn't that the Ford/Jag dealer at one point, before they moved across the street? Roberts Jaguar? @mimico_polak

Not sure which you're mentioning specifically, but there was Robert Motors Jaguar where I worked at the corner of Dundas / North Queen.

200m east of there was the Volvo counterpart under Robert Motors also.

That was a fun job...had a chance to drive some nice cars during that time. 2003 S-Type R being my favourite. The Volvo V70R also has a special place in my heart.

The spot identified by @backmarkerducati was an old Ford dealer, and a JEEP dealer beside it.

Long and detailed video about EV brake lights (or lack thereof).

TL: DW Many vehicles with regen don't activate brake lights when using regen. Brake lights are tied to friction brakes only. EU explicitly banned brake lights with regen. They finally passed a revision that brake lights must activate above a certain deceleration which makes sense. The person behind you doesn't care if you are using friction brakes or regen to quickly stop.

My Gen1 volt doesn’t activate brake lights with regen. It was a huge complaint. Gen2 Volts do activate them beyond a certain level of regen deceleration now.

Anyhow, in unrelated news, I’ve added “Rims do not shatter” to my list of things that have never happened to my Volt.

Given that both front and rear are destroyed, I am going with hitting an object/pothole with a 7000 lb vehicle. Without a lot more information, I'm not going to blame tesla for that one.

Not totally unfair, but a lot of cars hit potholes or things in the road (this appears to have had a side impact, possibly the median) and alloy rims literally shattering at the base isn’t a widespread occurrence. If whatever was hit was so insanely forceful as to break the rim, the tire should be damaged as well. The rear tire pictures appears to still be perfectly inflated.

Time will tell on this one.
