Wtf is happening down south? Party like it’s 1894?

Handmaid’s Tale is being moved from the fiction section to the reality section of bookstores.

I’d like to say “it couldn’t happen here” but lately some of our worst imports have been “things fringe Americans like to ruin for everyone for 100 Alex”.

And look at the draconian laws red states are putting in place now that the Supreme Court has given them the green light. Some rights should be inalienable.

Curiously, just yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled that states could not restrict the rights of citizens to open carry guns.

Not hype…it’s not been an issue for any previous Supreme Court for 50 years. Overturning a previous Supreme Court ruling is to put it mildly, not normal.

This is a christofascist wet dream for the nutbars . Public opinion be damned.

Poland is a notable hold out for abortion laws since they regressed last year. Even Ireland, where I suspect a lot of the christofascists claim heritage, has fairly liberal abortion laws now. Italy where Mr Pope man lives has liberal abortion laws too.

You also realize there's no law in Canada that guarantees access to abortion as a right. Our own door on this isn't closed.

That’s by design I think. Laws can be repealed. In Canada it’s a human rights issue.

well, what they should do is enshrine it in the constitution. i don't see any party making that jump. instead we'll politely ignore the fact that the wind could change direction at any moment and pass more laws to ban black plastic .22 rifles.

No one is killing off future generations. Despite what the anti-abortion side might portray no woman thinks to herself “oh, it’s just a bit of surgery no biggie”. The choice is what’s important here. Take the emotion out of things and that clump of cells inside a woman is the difference between life and death or a decent living vs a life of poverty in some cases. In other cases of rape or incest do you still think the baby should be carried to term if the mother doesn’t want that? Are women just incubators?

I've written and deleted a few pages of responses to this thread. It's a touchy subject, particularly on Canadian forum.

I'm gonna watch this one quietly before going too deep with comments.

My early thoughts are that if one is really interested in this decision, learn about Scotus mandate, the 14th amentiment, and the demarcation points between US federal and state constutions.
 
Just had a look outside... sky's not falling, were all going to be ok. Seriously though, if your in a state that bans something that you want/need... move to a state that allows it.

Gotcha....no big deal if the healthcare in my province is suddenly taken away....just move to another province. Sounds really stupid when I type it. Oh and no guarantees the state I moved to keeps the healthcare that I want because the minority makes the rules.
