Personally, that’s the kind of event I’d rather see from bike brands - more festival/flea market/food kind of vibe than test riding.
I get that test rides are supposed to spark desire and get their product added to the shortlist, but if a buyer is serious about purchasing a new model, they’ll go to the dealer and ride *one.* They don’t ride what they’re looking for and then multiple others not even in their consideration set. All demo rides do is satisfy curiosity, or check off bucket lists.
It’s the “something to do with other people” that I think most riders are looking for. Maybe the major brands need to collabo with third party organizers and get behind a Honsuzikawiaha Pollooza fest and really kill it - can’t miss events that become highlights on the calendar.
I used to manage demo days in the ski and high-end bicycle segments - mostly tire kickers; people looking to rock high status equipment for awhile; and some just looking for an excuse to thrash somebody else’s good stuff because they’d already wrecked the hell out their own equipment.
I can say though, that I did once demo a competitor’s ski at their demo day and was so over the moon about them that I bought a pair after giving them back. So…?
