2024 Day Trips

I use a Cardo Packtalk Bold and almost never connect with other riders. I just use it for music and the very rare phone call.

But I should use it more for group rides I'm leading, because it would really help when missing a spot and wanting to do a u-turn, or warning riders behind of some hazard etc.

The sound quality on the Cardo and upgraded speakers is what makes it the best choice for me.
The ability to warn other riders is really beneficial.
Especially when passing other vehicles that may be obstructing what's up ahead.

For sure that's a big one.
The helmet comms can play a super big role in keeping everyone safe.

I've also used it on longer rides with my wife and she will tell me to look at the bear on the left or the eagle on the right, which is great if I'm too focused on the road to notice things like that.

Nice day for a ride!

Went over to Borden to check out the planes! Then off to Creemore, then Terra Nova river road, north to Pretty River Road.

BTW I saw my first ever Goldwing train as I turned onto Pretty River Road.

Is Borden open for the public to go though? For the longest time it was closed.

Ride from the other day. Was thinking to go to Kingston, but the wind kept kicking up, so went a different way.

Pontypool, Millbrook, Port Hope, Cobourg, Brighton, Campbellford, Hastings, Keene, home

Never been through Pontypool before, found this building a bit interesting.

Nice. You were firmly in my neck of the woods.

The building in Pontypool is an old grain elevator. Interestingly, it's constructed with 2X4's or 6's (real 4" or 6" ones) laid on their sides for strength against tons of grain. There was a plaque there at one time, it may be gone.

The rail line adjacent is still active and goes from Scarborough to Havelock, which is where you took the picture of the rail cars. The line through Hastings was pulled up in the late 80's/early 90's and was a CNR line as opposed to CPR. Those cars are loaded with a substance that's used in glass production. It's harvested from a mine well north of Havelock.

That rail line was originally the Ontario and Quebec railway which was acquired by the CPR. It used to run all the way to Ottawa. There are plans, though kinda pie-in-the-sky to upgrade it and reinstall the tracks to create a passenger only line from Toronto to Ottawa and on to Montreal.

There's an EXCELLENT bakery in Havelock, off the main street that serves great coffee, sandwiches, shortbread cookies and pastries and bakes really nice bread.

There's a bunch of interesting places in the general area, that can be found while travelling good, smooth, and scenic back roads.

I haven't been to the donut place in Campbellford, though I'm inclined to say, "Mmmmm...Sprinkles!!!!!"

Thanks for all the info.

I think I mixed up the towns, Havelock and Hastings. I guess I have to go back now since you mentioned the bakery, I honestly didn't think there was much there other then the train cars. But I will have a look next time.

Here is the the bakery in Campbellford

They must have done some structural work on that elevator as a few years back was plastered with Danger signs and looked like it was close to falling down.

Sburns - the old rail-trails are easy-peasy and a nice change of pace if you want to run one from Hastings to Cford for example. Your Vstrom will be just fine.

They did restore it a few years ago as well as knocking down a single story shed attached. It was going to be an art gallery but it never materialized.

Good suggestion about that rail trail from Hastings to Campbellford. I believe it's available to ATV's etc., unlike the trail originating in Peterborough.

Colour Colour COLOUR!!!

Did a ride through Algonquin yesterday, and it was amazing. Colours are at peek pretty much right now!

Morning started out rough, cold, kinda wet, but once I got past Huntsville and the sun came out, was much better. Went from West to East on HWY 60. I think this way is better then starting on East end, the colours show better with low sun and setting in the west, and you are not riding looking at the sun.

Someplace in Bracebridge

Huntsville lookout, and it was packed, I barely had a spot to park, got out of there quickly

Nice. I'm planning to go for a ride this weekend with my wife so we can see the fall colours.
Watch out for gwakers. There was a section midway where they all were parked on both sides of the highway causing everything to slow down. From what I saw briefly there was moose in the trees.

The park is suppose to be enforcing for this not to happen, doesn't seem to be working. There was a park truck there which didn't seem to be doing anything except have it's flashing lights on. Also there are unmarked/blacked out police cars on HWY 60.

Otherwise enjoy!
