2003-2009ish CBR600RR and YZF-R6 Owners show yourselves!

only thing with these SS bikes, depending on your weight or how much gear you're carrying, you could be stopping every 200ish km's for gas. Keep that in mind. If you need further distance out of a tank, there are many non-SS options to consider as well.

As for carrying a small amount of gear, I assume it is recommended to go with a tank bag vs backpack to avoid the sloshing of weight around on your back (just from many cycling experiences I assume this)?

OP, both are great bikes. R6 as been stated has a more aggressive riding position. If you can, test ride them both. Just sitting on it won't really give you a good measure of comfort. I personally like the higher seat height of the R6 as I'm over 6ft. At least you've narrowed it down, as the more choices the more confused you'll become. Basically these two things should be the determining factor #1 comfort # 2 looks! Good luck with your decision.

I am an avid road cyclist so uncomfortable seats are no stranger to me. I will definitely look to test ride both before I make any purchases.

Tank and Tail/Saddle bags are great if you have them.
Backpacks will do ok, so long as they're not too large and that the straps are tight. If you have one that has a waist/chest strap, even better. Only worry with a backpack is if you dump the bike, everything and anything in your backpack will poke and prod you as you roll down the 401 after your bike.

Decent tank bags can be had for $30-50 if you catch the right sale. Saddle bags are a little pricier but solid investment if you're doing longer trips, regularly.

I will have to look into brands then and invest in a good set of bags.

Here's a very good option, not cheap, but the bags will outlast any bike you have:

They look quite good, do you have a set/experience with them? Are they fairly secure? How do they strap to the tail, under the passenger seat?

They secure with clips that go around/under your passenger seat. Keeps things nice and dry.
I bought a US20 bag couple years back and never looked bag.

There are more cost effective options, like dry bags from MEC and bungee cords, but I'm a fan of the Kriega's.

Great, is there anywhere in the GTA that sells then @ close to MSRP? I don't mind ordering online, just comparing in person is nice.

I picked mine up when I visited friends in Chicago. Don't know about local.

Hey Guys and Gals!

I am looking at buying one of these two bikes in the coming weeks (if we ever can lose the snow...). I was wondering about any common issues to look out for when checking out/owning one of these bikes. They are Japanese so I expect their quality to be very good but just covering all my bases.

If you own/have owned one or more of the bikes in the stated year range state the year and model you owned and what your experiences were with it. If you have owned/had experience with multiple years of a bike it would be greatly appreciated if you could briefly compare them (not expecting much of a change year to year but if there are particular things to look out for it would be good to hear from those with experience).

Cheers!

To me this isn't even a question id go with a 600rr. The yamaha's torture seating position along with all its "minor problems" over the years is a head ache.

You will however spend more on the honda, but its money well spent.

Had a 2005 R6 that I really enjoyed. However being 5"11 I was at the limit of my comfort as I was leaned forward into the cockpit. The low clip-ons made it easy to input steering; but on the highway it was hard on the wrists. There is very little wind protection from the stock windscreen: You may want to go aftermarket. Easy to ride, light and fast. I just found it to be a little flighty a moderate speeds though it was manageable. Power starts at 6000 rpm. Apparently 2005 was the best year of the redesign. I dunno...choose whatever you want.

If you find your ss a little uncomfortable due to low clip ons you could raise the bars with a set of converti bars or a dirt bar kit from lsl/spiegler.Makes the bike much more comfortable for long rides imho

more usable power band?
If you really wanna move pick up an 08+ R6 and I'll give it a usable power band for ya :)

If you're looking at something older try and find 05 R6, better brakes, suspension and fuel injection than 03/04 R6, and better brakes and suspension than even 06-09 R6S (R6S is special model of R6, old style like 03/04 but upgraded fuel injection).

Oh, and you wanted pics. Lots of my old 08 R6 up on http://tafb.xxx/r6 ... a few are nsfw.

A few of my fav's:

How tall are you? I'm a little over 6'2 and I fit on my 05 R6 perfectly. I sat on a bunch of newer r6's and cbr 600RR's and the way the tank is designed my leg for the life of me did not want to fit into the contours, it always sat on against the 'lip' at the top with my feet on the pegs. If I were to hop onto a newer r6 or 600RR i'd need adjustable rearsets for sure. Leg dimensions will obviously play a large part, just throwing in my 0.02. Also TAFB hit the nail on the head, the 05 is a solid choice of 6, you get the inverted forks, radial mounted larger brakes, and the better fuel injection.

Nice bike, sounds awesome!

I'm 5'10" so I should fit on a stock bike

Also in terms of price, is Kelley's BlueBook fairly close to the prices I should expect to pay (I assume it will be a little higher since it is spring time)? Or is it inaccurate for Canadian bikes (many of the bikes I have seen online differ wildly from the BB price, especially CBRs)?

The kbb is garbage for doing for used bikes from my experience

It is American based so I thought it would likely be a little different. I've developed my own ideas about what a year should be on average so I should be fine.

Just have a look on toronto.kjiji.ca and you can get an idea on the prices.

For a "new" 2008 R6 they are going for $8k. Mileage and condition go down from there.
