1st whiny rant, sorry

+1 to this. The red cross has been the 1st to be at disaster areas & has been helping for decades

The second worst offender this year is Marsha J. Evans, President and CEO of the American Red Cross...for her salary for the year ending in 2009 was $651,957 plus expenses. Enjoys 6 weeks - fully paid holidays including all related expenses during the holiday trip for her and her husband and kids. including 100% fully paid health & dental plan for her and her family, for life. This means out of every dollar they bring in, about $0.39 goes to related charity causes.

I'm fully aware of things like these.
Remember the whole Salvation army fiasco? Who was stealing the toys? Lol

Pay top dollar for top people. No other way. That's how it was explained to me. Red Cross it is.

If you're going to take a shot, at least take a shot at the CANADIAN Red Cross.

World vision has always seemed fishy to me.

A few years ago I was in the slums of Nairobi (Mukuru) and damned if they weren't much better dressed than in north america. All the clothes were clean and the kids were amazingly happy. Most adult men (including people in the slums) wear suits, I wore golf shirts and felt significantly underdressed in most situations). Apparently some of those clothing donation boxes do make it overseas to help people. Sure, if you look really hard you can find the kid surrounded by flies with runny eyes and nose, but they are a tiny minority that is portrayed by world vision as typical. My money now goes to Mukuru to help the kids.

Wow Mr. Knowledge you don't get it.

Ever heard of self esteem? It's huge in this hemisphere, why not Afrika? Toss the kid a clean T shirt fer crise sake.

Charity by design is not a profit center. Every time somebody trots out the "you have to pay the best to get the best I need to hurl" Thanx.

knowledge makes a point. Do you want an organization with a hundred million dollar budget being run by an accountant that couldn't balance the budget of a chip truck? That said, wouldn't it be nice if some of the CEOs that haul in the multi-million dollar coin could take a year off and volunteer.

Re the kid in rags, advertizing is usually aimed at the bottom of the barrel. Everyone does it. The SPCA type show pictures of the cute "At risk" species not the snakes and lizards. You, the OP, obviously look a little harder at the picture.

I was on one of these rants a while back and someone pointed out that if only half the money did any good was I really that hard done by that I should stop donating completely?

My aim is to respond w/o offending. It's been kinda hit and miss lately. You talk about a hundred million dollar donated budget and then talk about half doing any good. Are you in government?

Lets talk about the rags another time.

I really don't see the need with helping people in other countries. Are you really guilted into where you were born ? into having a decent family ?, into working hard and having a good job ? Go walk downtown and help people living on the street. At least they will thank you and you do the exchange in person. A lot of people just sidestep the homeless, but they feel guilty when they see a starving African on T.V.

There was this lady who pretended to be homeless. She ended up pulling in an age income from doing nothing. Tax free too

My friend sees people from her building collecting welfare and begging on the street corner pretending to be homeless. Makes her so angry cause they are not homeless.

Well I guess people help other people in countries like Africa since in those countries there is absolutely no support system for the poor and destitute and the chances of these people turning their life around is all but zero. However, in countries like Canada there are more programs, help available, and the chances of turning their life around is better than zero.

And again, is that your fault ? is it Canada's fault that we were able to implement this support structure to help our fellow Canadians ( still thousands upon thousands in need mind you ). Like it was stated earlier, Africa has been like this forever, even when support centers like this opened up 40 years ago. In a lot of the cases rebels will raid the supplies and feed and cloth themselves.

Same goes for the war in Afghanistan. Few friends of mine went over and say it is such a hard thing to combat. They attempt to help and teach kids in schools but when they leave, Terrorists come in, ask the people to join and the ones that don't get shot. The support system we use here, does not work in other Countries.

Still doesn't detract from the fact that the poor and destitute may need more help there than those here. Just means that there are more obstacles and hardships associated.
