ZX-10 getting spanked by a station wagon @ 300 kmh

Let's see, I'll start: cars at high speeds do have superior (as in, better) drag characteristics than bikes, particularly supersports. The 'busa is a good example of what a bike designed to lower air drag looks like. Second, the relatively low pressure inside the car compared to the very high pressure of air outside the car would have the effect - although perhaps not literal - of sucking the windows into the car. And man, did it look like they were about to.

Go on now, explain how much smarter you are. Or are you just being a jerk?

Superior coefficient of drag doesn't necessarily mean superior aerodynamics. You have to factor in frontal area, and you'll find the numbers swing back in favour of the motorcycle. Of course this doesn't include elements contributing to lift or downforce... the latter of which creates even more aerodynamic drag.

The simple truth is that bikes don't have the crazy amount of power it takes to overcome drag at high velocity. They don't have more drag, they just don't have enough power. Double the speed and you need quadruple the power.. but you've also quadrupled the drag.

U ppl take comments way too serious, chillout, geez
All i can say is this vid does not look good for Kawi's~

Maybe your 250, but my gixxer RIPS... even a spoon civic.

So, the lower the coefficient of drag, the less drag an object has on it at a given speed proportional to its area. The problem is that with rider, a bike has a fairly high drag coefficient - approaching 1.0 if some studies can be believed. That means that for its overall area, a bike with rider could have as much as three times the coefficient of drag force working on it, compared to the same amount of area on a car - for example, a Corvette with a 0.34 drag coefficient. Compare the total frontal area of both (with rider). Is it three times as much area? If it helps, think of laying the bike with rider on its side in front of the car and comparing the frontal area of the two.

Of course, it's true you can put more power (and more tire patch) into a car application.

Here is a formula explanation I found with Google:

Formula:

Dt=Cd(q)S

Where: drag is determined by five factors. Cd, surface area, local pressure, local temperature, and air speed.

Assume: Standard atmosphere (sea level, 15 degree C, and a barometer of 29.92), Car at .35 Cd. Bike at 1.0 Cd. Car surface area at 19 sq. ft. Bike surface area at 7 sq. ft. (surface areas and Cds are approximate numbers).

50 kts

Bike Dt = 59.32 lbs

Car Dt = 56.35 lbs

100 kts:

Bike Dt = 237.3 lbs

Car Dt = 225.44 lbs

150 kts:

Bike Dt = 533.90 lbs

Car Dt = 507.20 lbs

Conclusion:

In the case of cars vs. bikes the bikes generally have triple the Cd but 1/3 the surface area so Dt remains about the same regardless of speed. Cars kick the crap out of bikes at high speeds because at high speeds the predominant factor is aerodynamics. As speeds increase the rate of acceleration decreases and the superior HP/weight ratio that gave the bike superior acceleration at low drag speeds cease to be the deciding factor. At high speeds where rates of acceleration are minimal you need horsepower to overcome the drag factors. As we have seen, aerodynamic drag is approximately equal so whoever has the most horsepower wins.

FYI, I see "8" square feet listed in other articles on bike + rider frontal area in other places. But I can't add to that.

Couldn't agree more. Back to the vid. I thought all German vehicles were speed limited to 150 MPH?

That's the problem. They (Canadian drivers/riders) wern't taught anything other than starting an engine and engaging drive. The most skill your average Canadian driver has is the ability to text, drive and still sip their Timmys, while sitting at 110kph in the outside lane of an empty 400 series highway. And, unfortunately, its as likely to be an OPP cruiser as it is a member of the general population.

First thing you do is remove the speed limiter. Anywhere from €500-€1500. And the fun only goes up from there.

If that's an accurate assessment of the average Canadian driver what's that tell you? Most Canadians probably don't give a flip about hiway heroics and jockeying for position. A to B is what it's all about. At 110 you're already above the limit so why cry foul? These are public roads not private racetracks.

Damn this is how my commute to blue mountain should be. Not puttering around at 100KM/h. That's moped speed.

That most Canadians do not care for road rules...we also have the issue of ppl from all over the world driving with different road manners. England, germany fine...but india, indonesia, china etc... it's just...safer to stay home at times lol.

That car is hauling *****

A $$ is not allowed :(

I wonder if it was S65 what the reaction would be

I drive a pickup and tend to cruise at 115-120 on the highway... This means I'll be passing people, but there is still a few going faster. I'm a constant lane changer to keep myself cruising at my speed but allowing the faster people to go through without interruption... I wish more people would respect each other on the roads, we would all get there faster and safer and less people would get stressed out on the drive.
So what if someone is doing 110? They aren't the police, they should just get out of the way and let the cops get the speeders further down the road. I like having people drive faster than me, takes the heat away from me!
Those idiots doing 110 in the left lane cause so many issues that they are oblivious too, just like those doing 100 in the middle lane as everyone passes on either side of them and then tries to get situated again in their proper lanes. It's dangerous.

I did my road tests with a stick... And I think it should be mandatory. If you can't drive well enough with a stick to pass the EASY tests we have, people shouldn't be driving.

rmmedic for prez! I agree with you on all the points there and yes, I'm also one of those who go out of their way to get outta the left lane when a faster vehicle approaches from behind. That's proper lane discipline, not properly taught here.

Lol the gentleman in charge of our highways who completely ignored the petition and research done to increase our speed limits openly admits to putting along at 100km/h and almost causing accidents that way.

I don't have a problem with any of that. I'll do 115-120 when the mood strikes, although at that I recognize I'm approaching potential police interest. I like to save my moving violations for the bike. Seems I get one every year or two.

If I'm doing 120 in the fast lane and come upon someone doing 80-105 I might grind my teeth into a fine brown paste but if they're at 110 I check my emotions. If I'm doing 120 and somebody comes behind even faster I think "Bugga" and move over.

But the fact remains that speed limit is 100 so to accuse "idiots doing 110 being oblivious" is putting the blame in the wrong spot. People need to chill.

People need to move out of the way. OP video shows us that even travelling at 300km/h is perfectly safe when you can depend on other road users to follow the rules and get out of the way of faster moving traffic.

The posted speed limit is meaningless when the average speed on the 400 series highways is 120km/h. 110 in the left is downright dangerous. I move out of the way no matter what speed Im doing. Its the simplest rule to follow yet so many imbeciles just don't get it; or they're too arrogant to move, thinking that whatever speed they're doing should be "good enough" for anybody behind them. Selfish.

Exactly. You drive on the 400/Hwy 69/Hwy 17 up north and you see people jetting at 120-135 in the right lane and the PASSING LANE is open as far as the eye can see. For passing.

I can't speak for the other three but Kawi's are not limited to 299. The speedo simply won't read any higher than 299.

The tach will redline in 6th at 299 but if the bike has enough power the rpms will continue to climb. My 04 was geared but I never had a speedohealer, I could hit the limiter in 6th and the speedo would read 299 @ redline, and would also read 299 @ the limiter.
