Your home is not your castle

I really hope our government reviews just how stupid these charges are before Mr. Tomson loses his house from legal fee's

the fact that they're pressing forward after dropping one charge (that the evidence in their hands outright proved was false) means that is the intent. Mr Tomson defended himself, ergo he MUST be punished.

WOW, thats pretty messed up. So the correct thing to do in this situation would have been... wait in your home till you burnt to death.

Lesson learned: Always use the rifle with a bayonet :)

The real lesson is that if you pull your gun out, shoot to kill. His statements indicated that he was shooting over their heads, to scare them off, which indicated that he wasn't in sufficient fear for his life.

How long do you think it would take to load this?

Clearly the gun was still in use after he put it on the table, since the threat was still present. Are the cops trying to say no one can ever put a gun down, ever? You either walk around with it or lock it up?

I hope after this is laughed out of court the guy can sue for malicious prosecution or something.

Remember, we live in a world where legal gun ownership has you being treated like a criminal. It's all about politics, not common sense.

Setting an example for others? Roll over and let the crimminals do what they want? That doesn't jive with me. I agree with the majority of this board. Someone comes into my house, they're leaving in a body bag, or an ambulance. See what my mood is.
Sorry Crusingirl. My attitude isn't directed at you, just this situation. It's absolutely ridculous. Mr. Thompson showed them mercy by not killing them and now he's fighting for his freedom. All this after they lobbed some firebombs.

Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a judicial decision to prevent future charges. meaning that someone has to be the guy that sits in court. I hope that is indeed the case.

If I were to set a precedent though. I would be hard pressed to find a better one.

In Canada, if you defend yourself, you would end up in more trouble than the criminal.

What a beauty!!

Is that yours? If so, where can I get one?

It's just a replica, in .44 cal., of a 1861 Colt Navy revolver. There are a few companies in Italy, that make them. Had it for 20 years or so. I picked it up, used, at a gun shop in Nobleton, for $125.00. Don't think that they've been there for years, but could likely be ordered from any shop that carries pistols. It would likely take me 5 minutes to load, if I was in a hurry (cap, ball, and powder). In the Old West they would carry an extra loaded cylinder, so that they could reload quickly after emptying the first.

By the way. Believe it or not, it's still considered a restricted weapon. Back then you could buy one, in New York State, with just your driver's license.

Which brings me to a fairly simple way that Mr. Thompson could have been ready to go in seconds, after hearing he attack; gun safe with a keypad lock and pre-loaded magazines stored separately, which is a distinct possibility given the way that things had been going.

I read in an article that an re-enactment of the process by Mr. Thompson showed that he could arm himself with the guns from his safe loaded in 38 seconds.

That seems well within normal to me.

I believe its perfectly legal to have your guns and ammo together in the same safe.

Yes, it is, as long as they are stored under lock and key, in some substantial way. A gun locker is good enough. A gun safe is better.

An actual gun safe (advertised as such) will just make it slightly less likely for an ignorant yahoo that works for a service that has a strong anti culture to ruin you financially with improper storage charges. I'd bet that most of the TPS still believes that the official reason behind the storage regs is to prevent theft. Note to the uneducated: It is to prevent instant access that may (theoretically) facilitate a heat-of-the-moment killing (including suicides).
