It's a bit of a myth that side bends hit your obliques, I remember reading a long time ago it had something to do with the direction the muscle fibres run..... as well there is possibility that if you use heavy weight to perform such exercises that you're actually growing your waist/love handles, which is probably the opposite result you're trying to achieve...

Obliques are better hit with rotation type exercises...

let's see if i can dig up that thread...

here we go

http://www.ironmagazineforums.com/training/19078-side-bends-good-bad.html

and here's a list of some oblique exercises

http://www.exercise4weightloss.com/abdominal-exercises-oblique.html

Personally, I like to do a lot of cable "wood-chops" or twists with the grips at about chest level

Yep, the obliques don't go up and down, they are diaganol.

I have this horrible feeling that once I get rid of this Body fat my stomach is still going to be bigger than my pelvis, so I'll always look like I have a bit of a gut.

Actual strength and abilit is more important to me than just looking good, specifically because my job requires it.

I actually believe Kane is natural. .

I agree, he looks very natural to me. Yesterday I actually watched a few of his youtube videos (which he has a lot of) when not pumped up, he has a natural stringy, hard look, not bubbled inflat-o-muscle juicebag look. He's just super shredded.

After watching some clips and seeing how he trains, he's very unconventional, that's for sure. He has a morning workout that he does 5 days a week which includes basic calisthenics and I guess he then weight trains later in the day. Interesting and he definitely is a student of the game and appears very knowledgeable.

+1 to Orange Triad... it's a little pricey but it has the MSM + glucosamine + chondroitin blend included in it so you don't need to supplement joint health separately.

Where does everyone get their supps/protein anyway?

I usually just buy in bulk ($200-300) orders on Supplements Canada and get free shipping / decent discount

I picked up 3 bottles of OT when Musclehq.com had them on sale for $18 per bottle plus $11 shipping, BB.com has it for $30 per bottle I think.

I'll normally buy from whoever has what I want at the cheapest price. Bodybuilding.com, fitnessone.com, I forget who else.

These guys inspired me, so I joined!

This is genius

I've been wondering for the past couple of weeks: what stops him from competing like Roasted does? Is a body like that not competition-worthy?

You could go for the Liddell six pack

Exactly but pure bodybuilding workouts aren't good for overall fitness or functionality. As you said you can't run 20 mins. I'm impressed you admit that as most body builders think they are super athletes, love to see them try any knd of high intensity trainng it's pretty funny to watch beach muscles try and keep up.
if changed my workouts to pure body building you are right. Would have different body composition. But based on my genes I still believe im built for power, speed and endurance not looking pretty!

its always funny as hell to watch the big muscled gorillas getting their ***** handed to them in the gym by little guys...dudes try and stare you down and intimidate you like they're the big bad wolf but can barely make it past the first round.
I weigh 160lbs and when you're 200lbs, jacked and getting your *** whooped by someone like me, looks don't mean ****...

Nothing, but a lot of people compete to get exposure, become sponsored, etc. He's already sponsored by Controlled Labs, he's already well known, appears in magazines, writes articles, etc. Plus, he said himself he doesn't really diet and work out to maximize size, so at the top levels (Pro) he would probably get smoked by bigger guys like Oge who, ironically enough, he trained in the past.

Stupidest argument ever. MMA/BJJ/Boxing etc. are skill based sports. Of course you're going to beat someone stronger at something you specifically train at. You want to challenge a basketball player to a 1 on 1? I bet your MMA skills won't mean **** on the basketball court. Does that mean they're more fit than you?

The only people that use the stupid "overall fitness" arguments are the cross fit phaggots because they don't train at anything specific and are mediocre at everything. A powerlifter doesn't give a crap about how fast he can run 10K and a marathon runner doesn't care about his bench press #'s. None of these people have a superiority complex either and argue about who's more fit. No one cares, and even if they did, "more fit" is a meaningless and un-measurable quality without context.

First round of what? Are you talking about some sort of sparring?

I do this wicked exercise for my obliques and they work so well that I can only do them once a month or my obliques just get out of proportion. Assume jacknife chin up position (http://www.bodybuilding.com/exercises/detail/view/name/jackknife-sit-up/) <- like that but holding on to a bar. Keep your legs together and while keeping your torso stationary, rotate your legs side to side

ahh thanks. It's too bad I don't take supplements (aside from purple wraath) - it'd be a good long-term goal to eventually try and get sponsored. Also, thanks for the suggestion to up my carbs. Definitely starting to put on some slow size. It's just hard being patient with this slow bulking thing.

Btw, have any of you tried that intrain stuff or any of the other Controlled Lab products? I stand by purple wraath & leangains.com did wonders for me

First round of what? Are you talking about some sort of sparring?

yes...sparring, and I wasn't arguing anything Roasted...just pointing out what I've seen which is A LOT of big guys thinking they're the **** just because of their size...its just the general perception that "big" is good.
I got a lot more fit and lean when I started doing proper strength and conditioning on the side along with my regular training, I dropped 10 lbs but got much stronger overall.
Funny thing is everyone in my family keeps going off about how I look too skinny and a unhealthy blah blah blah...even their perception of health and fitness is being big and bulky. My cousin whose about 215 and decently fit is the worst, yet he won't have a friendly sparring session because I train, and he's got almost 60lbs on me and should easily be able to pin me down...I even brought home the grip test and I was 55kg and he was only a few kg more than me, that shut him up for a while...

edit: for Roasted specifically, I think fighting skill and ability are much more related to your physical fitness in its true sense than being able to shoot through hoops or get a ball in a net, that's not say if those athletes trained in combat sports they wouldn't kick ***....at the same time I think just BJJ and Boxing are kind of pussy on its own...you're too restricted in what you can do, you might beat a person but you know very well they would have knocked the **** outta you in a back alley.
I'm just a raw mother****er and believe anything goes really, if you're smaller too bad...make up for it with your bitintelligence by thinking out the box or something...
But at the end of gun just changed just changed everything...they've empowered the pussies. Go to ****ing Africa and a 6 year old can shoot you dead...I'm high as **** and might have gone off topic a bit, goodnight.

I think you are the exact kind of idiot the sport of MMA does not need.

You clearly don't have much respect for anything. "I am a raw mother ****er"... ya sure you are.

no disrespect intended, but mother****er you don't me...or what I do.

if you know anything about what you're talking about, I meant in the sense that I'm more of a Wanderlei, Hendo, Shogun, Gatti type of "in your face, kill or be killed" person rather than an Anderson, Machida, or Mayweather whose gonna dance around doing pretty **** and knock you out with some slick ****...

so stop being a *****.

Come on boys, don't ruin a good thread.

Im sure each of us in here has a sport they excel in over most others on the board, simply because that is where their interest or natural ability is.

However, I don't think just because you participate in a certain sport makes you bad ***. I could compare my choice of athletic pass time and make it more had *** than even MMA... Doesnt mean I think I'm a bad *** because I compete in one of the roughest sports out there.

now this is fit....
