Working out! Fitness! Nutrition!

Does anyone have a good link/site for something that'll give me a crash course in nutrition? I'm finally at the point where it all comes down to nutrition (started off at 5'10 & 145lbs, now I'm at 165lbs & I don't want to get any bigger). I just want my bottom 2 abs out (5th & 6th, I'm not even dreaming about the 7th & 8th).

Started counting calories & cutting down on carbs (which kills me to do 'cause I eat a lot of rice)...but I know that I could do better. I just want to get my body fat down to a percentage where I only have to do cardio once a week 'cause I'm eating right.

& thanks for the review, dizzy. That looks like a decent workout plan...I'm thinking about starting that one up in the summer. Do you think it's one of those things that need to be followed strictly? I can only do 3 days a week so I'm thinking it'll take about 5 months instead of 3...

Also, I'm working on getting you guys a hilarious video of these guys that work out together. They spot each other during pushups. Lmao he basically sits on top of his friend and pulls him up and they do like 100 reps all while grunting & motivating each other.

It's def a program to be followed exactly as it laid out, both the nutrition and routine. So maybe wait until you can find the time to commit 100%. It's a great program though, can't say enough about it.

As far as nutrition goes try not to over complicate it or nit pick to much. I use to avoid carbs like the plague and while it "worked" I found it extremely hard to control cravings for sweets, bread etc... and would eventually binge and feel like crap. There was no balance and maintaining a low carb diet was daunting.

Now with that program I did, I ate 6-7 times a day with each meal consisting of fist size portion of carbs and a fist size portion of protein, no dairy, no sugar and fats came from the meats. I never counted cals.... Two 20min cardio sessions a day at very low intensity. It was a lot of food and a lot of carbs but the fat melted of of me. The best part is I had zero cravings for sweats etc during the entire 12 weeks.

Now on my bulk I kept the diet the same and just added back some dairy and good fats. I've put on some good size and the fat gain has been minimal. Bottom line is I'll never do the low carb thing again, I might lower them here and there but they'll remain in every meal I eat.

You need to find what works for you and one that isn't hard to maintain. If you feel like you're on a "diet" the greater chance that you"ll cheat or give up on it.

As far as an eight pack this usually come down to genetics, it's literally impossible for some people to get an 8 pack some can't even get 6. Just work on getting rid of the belly fat and see what pops up. Don't kill yourself with ab exercises. I worked abs maybe once a week and was shocked to find an 8 pack under their. I'll thank my genes for that.

Thanks, so much. Sent you a pm for some advise:)

Nope.......all diet. If anything I do less volume (less exercises/sets) and try to lift equally heavy as when I'm not dieting down so I loose as little lean mass as possible while dieting (high reps for cutting is complete and utter bullsheit).

The difference is that I eat ~3300 +- 100 cals every single day no matter what (I weigh my food), I don't drink, I don't eat crap, I eat roughly the same amount of carbs every single day (which last time was pretty low ~150g a day), etc.

It’s been great to read the experiences of others on exercise, diet and weight loss / control. I had to lose at least 10 lbs which should reduce my BP from stage 1 hypertension. I aimed at –17 lbs (ideal weight) and I’m now at –13 lbs in 4 weeks. My doctor said my meal types and portions were fine. So I got the P90X program that I think fell off the back of a truck with all the accoutrements. After 2 weeks of an hour a day the exercises were too hard – I was completing 30-50% of the reps of the program but it got me into a habit and I had lost 5 lbs in those two weeks which was very encouraging. I dropped the P90X and switched to a cardio based program and now run 3 miles every day at a 9 minute mile pace (gerbil wheel), row for 2 kms at a 800 calorie burn rate and do weights (bowflex) for about a 600+ calorie burn each day. The pounds are falling off and I’ve never felt better. Tuesdays is hockey which is likely even more than 600 calories as we play 4 on 4 for an hour.

The daily 1-hour workouts are now at the point where if I miss a day, I’m grumpy. The week I skied at Big White I thought I’d gain some weight as I ate and drank a bit rich – but I had l lost 2 lbs – yay!

As Adrath (?) said, being a parent makes getting the exercise tough but now that I’m single again, I’m able to do these things. Having been a GTHL assistant coach and trainer is actually a prescription for weight gain. Driving, eating arena food and being sedentary – 6 nights a week added to a 10 hour work day – never again.

Thanks, Dizzy. You pretty much described exactly what happened to me when I cut my carbs down. I developed such a sweet tooth and I had to keep snacking (ended up buying chips throughout the day & all that crap).

I'm not even trying for the 8 abs...I'd be happy with 6. I have a theory that my top 4 abs over compensate for my 5th & 6th. When I was in elementary, I used to do 700 situps a day (no one believes me, lol. And I can't even get past 100 now...). & then I got the top 4 insanely defined but I could never get the bottom 2 after that

One last question, though...why the low intensity cardio? What advantage does that have? I've been doing high intensity for 30 minutes. I never really understood why the machines would say that fat burn occurs at the lower heart rates - the only thing that I could think of is that you could keep the constant heart rate and go for longer; but I've been keeping a constant high heart rate (180~) for 30 minutes so I figured that in theory, it'd be even better. haha

The daily 1-hour workouts are now at the point where if I miss a day, I’m grumpy.
Congrats - that's a milestone in fitness for a lot of people. After working out on & off for years, this year I'm finally at that point and I love it.

Silly question for you guys. How do you determine body fat percentage?

My pleasure!

I wish I could go with you to VA Beach! One of my favourite places...

I'll be going min three times this riding season. Gilligan moved down in Jan and I'm trying to see him as much as possible. Its beautiful there.
