Working from home and zoom meetings

Minor update for this thread's topic...

Everyone on the software team is either a weeb or accepting of them. After the team saw my lewd posters, the lead dev asked for help in creating a mouse mat with a custom Photoshop image.

Let's just say I thought my stuff was degenerate until I helped with that image creation lol

Edit: also worth mentioning a director from my old job ordered me a pillow cover...it's a literal hentai image. This went far more positively than I thought it would lol

Devs are the weirdest people… I’m 100% sure if I put something like that on my screen I’d be fired in an instant (govt job).

Oh for sure. Government is all about appearances (aka. inclusiveness) and not rocking the boat due to the "old boys club" culture.

I would not push my luck with a work culture like that....I'd also probably quit because I've found open-mindedness extends beyond 2D waifus lol (problem types that can be classified as "no clue how to do, no idea what problems I'll run into" require very high open-mindedness to solve.)

So I decided to order a bunch of half naked posters of Chun Li, Cammy, Tifa, etc. etc. (Google for reference!)

I've also plastered them all over my wall. I'm not going to take 'em down but I'm curious, since we got a bunch of old school managers here, what would you do, during a zoom meeting, if the software glitches and an employee's background showed a bunch of half naked ahegao faced girls covered in white liquid?

I'm half serious about this question because I'd love to troll/see the reaction of the older more sensitive folk and push boundaries. But there are some legit issues involving work space versus home space now, especially since WFH will be VERY common.

I never show my face for meetings btw lol

I'm late to the party and too lazy to see if anyone already said this, but the issue with your posters is essentially that seeing them could make your female coworkers feel like they aren't valued for their contributions (that coworkers would openly display objectification posters during meetings is iffy) or that the environment is not professional and safe.

snowflakey male colleagues could also end up complaining about it too - so....I would fix that or have a wall you can point your camera at that doesn't show them even in the case of a glitch

and really...work is a time to build your personal professional brand...do you want to be remembered as the poster guy?

I am aware. My room is blurred during meetings. The ones who know, including females, are people I got a feel for and realized they aren't oversensitive SJWs or insecure folk.

And yes. I've been working on my branding for over a decade as an extremely competent, athletic, driven, and open minded software developer. It's admittedly a bit tiring as the path is always against the grain, but had I followed the advice people gave me when younger, I'd be ****** right now. It's definitely gotten more painful post graduation because the sanity checks (aka. people who think alike) are far more rare.

I want to work without a mask, something the vast majority wear at work because they are afraid of being themselves, and I encourage others to do so through example.

I am going to assume you have asked all those people why they are wearing a mask and they have ALL told you that what you stated is the reason.

If not, I would suggest you refrain from the 'holier than thou' attitude.

Gov job, you could not show up for 6 months and still have a job, nothing to worry about there. I would put some degrading photo of JT as my desktop. 🤷‍♂️

I might be able to pull that off….but stupid me is proud of doing a good job. Plus our entire team comes from the private sector so it’s 12hrs/day for the higher ups. No slackers on this team.

Sounds like my team. Work harder for the gov than I ever did private. No one is forcing us to, but our own drive to affect change.

Yeah I hear you, should be proud of the work you do and not lower your standards/ethics.
I was doing some work for a gov agency earlier in the year (CP), just grunt work, and I was told to slow down, don't work so fast and basically to take breaks every hour...

Tell me why you wear a mask at work then.

So much this. This happens at private companies too, especially if management is focused on optics over actual results. I had 6 hrs of free time out of 8 at my previous job lol

Soft skills....

You can be the most technically astute person in the world but soft skills are the difference between those that truly get ahead and those that just do well. From your continuous job related threads this seems to totally escape you. It is what it is (for now) if your current situation is all you want to achieve don't develop them, but it is not the path to the truly big money.

Being a jackass, even a passive aggressive one by blurring what many people know is there is not soft skills. Of course a manager etc. with soft skills will totally manipulate you by appearing to be "on board" or positive because they are using their soft skills to manipulate you to do your job for them or for future efforts--to like them. Sure it gets you notoriety and maybe serves a narcissistic need if that is all you want to achieve. I can guarantee this is being discussed above your pay grade (not in a positive way) and you are getting enough done to put up with it--for now.

The tech world is full of CEOs and executives making very big money, they are not there because they still have mad developer skills, they are there because they got this sooner or later. They may still portray a "nerd" persona and may not be the classic MBA suit guys but they get this.

Everyday you market yourself on the job. There are many positive ways to set yourself apart, this is not positive branding.

I appreciate the concern but there's too much projection and you haven't figured out what the issue is with the gen x and boomer work culture that impacts productivity directly.

And what makes you think I have an interest in management or that the pay for a tech lead/system architect is not ridiculously high? And why would I want to be a CEO? This is what I mean by projection.

I know where your mindset is coming from and I'm not the only one that has no interest in working for such companies: its why the companies I want to work for exist.

Also, your great soft skills is a big reason why ppl put on masks.

That's freaking weird. If you have a fetish for half naked video game characters then whatever floats your boat but don't have them visible to other employees.

I can see why some people are suited to sit behind a computer all day with little to no social interaction.

Shortsightedness.... I work in a similar/same industry and I know exactly all the things you keep talking about, I know/have known hundreds of you... You can take advantage of this feedback or not.... that is growth or not...

You will get older. You are in a fairly young person's game. Eventually you hit your 40s or 50s+ and if you keep in the same/similar position you will need to keep up with people in their 20s/30s and there will be another new bias against you (ageism). Having a family also comes into it as family responsibility will slow your learning curve, if you want family time of course. If at that point you are still seen as the difficult narcissist, but now the "old one" with fading skills, you will find yourself on the street. Even worse, on the street you have to compete with those same people and the ageism will be worse and of course reputation (codes like a 50 year old, acts like a teenager). The best way to avoid all this is personal growth, soft skills are a big part of that. Of course there is also the risk of offshoring, soft skill guys that can change will still have jobs.

Soft skills....
People go into sales, consulting, management, team leadership, some find a nice niche as they are the only person left that knows some archaic mission critical code or equipment and can maintain it. Some publish and present, industry leadership which increases their brand, but it requires soft skills. Some go to teaching. Very few can keep up all the way to retirement, but so many think they can, "they are different", "they are special".... Some make enough to fully retire young (usually stock options...). CEO and management are just examples, there are many others. Many change industries, guys in front of me when I came up in the industry went into real estate, went back to school, some now work at McJobs to make ends meet.

You will also find that the decision makers that you impress today with your development skill set will not be there forever. The next ones come in and you start from scratch, what is the first impression they will see? As a lowly engineer early in my career I was on the first name basis with the senior execs to see a house cleaning and now I am just another face in the crowd--multiple times actually.

The truly smart people don't think about today but are looking decades in their future. Does it ever turn out exactly like they planned on day one, no but adapting is part of growth. I know you think you have the world by the balls today, that will not last forever. The exercise, look at all the people you work with, look at the age profile and what their jobs are????

Look to your future, grow up and get rid of the BS at work. Enjoy what you want on your time, don't advertise it at work if is is not a positive brand image. It is not selling out, becoming the "man", it is not about being a manager or a boomer it is about your future success decade(s) from now. Also having a family makes things NOT about you, that higher paying job may not be your dream but it is no longer about you except for hardcore narcissists of course.

Nice. But probably entirely wasted on who it was intended for. 🤷‍♂️
