Why Android is better than iPhone.

When I ask most people why their iphone is better (specs or performance wise) or why they want an iphone/ipad the response I get 9/10 is because "it looks cool" with the occasional 1/10 person actually saying how they've been able to integrate it with their work to improve performance due to apps or whatever.

other than gestures not much. iridebikes and poser are doing for iPhone (turning people away) what afong, motostark and firestart do for Android. all mindless fan bois when it comes to iPhone/Android

actually no.

find one post where i mindlessly extol the virtues of the android phone.

all i have done is question the 'superiority' of iOS products, using verifiable sources, not rhetoric, hyperbole, or ad copy.

cheers.

You will never be able to prove superiority with one or the other when it comes to the UI. Its all subjective to the individual using it. You can compare screens, processing power, ram, etc. But when it comes to how people use it, thats an individual experience with no right or wrong. I like iOS, it works well for me and integrates fantastically with my Mac hardware at work and home. I personally dont care about open source, I dont feel I am lacking at all with iOS and have never come to one limitation that I had me say "gee, I wish my iPhone could do this..." Now others can can replace iOS and iPhone with android and its just as valid. This is the thread that will never end, it will go on and on my friends... so said the lamb with the hand up its keister.

Actually I'm not an Android fanboi.. I see it as a lesser evil. The Meego platform has some potential, but it's too soon to tell and they have a lot of development (both in coding and marketing) to make it viable. One thing I like about Android is that it's open, not limited to one manufacturer and relatively hackable. I just don't see it attracting too much new talent from the Open Source community. It'll get ported to some of the bigger projects, but most of the community is waiting for a platform that will cooperate with'em better. The iOS platform is a lot more capable than the traditional cell phone, but at the end of the day, it's the same as any proprietary mobile platform that we had ever since the 1990's. Gives too much control to the manufacturer and the carriers, at the expense of the users.
With that being said, I am grateful to Apple and RIM for one thing. Their marketing finally made the average user realize that a mobile phone is a computer, running an OS and a bunch of packages. While RIM was there first, Apple's marketing machine was more effective. Android is just a step in the right direction, but I'm really waiting for the next step to become obvious.
In the interim, chances are I'll get an Android device, mostly because Meego's navigation support is only half-baked at the moment and I'll be getting something soon.

oh, there's no question that the ui/iOS of apple products is well designed and user friendly. for ease of use, others do not yet match apple.

for me the issue is the unquestioning, blind, obsequious cheerleading for iStuff that some people are guilty of, as though these products are without flaw or equal. so unrealistic.

I agree 100% and I use Apple stuff, lots of it. iMac, MacBook Pro, Lampshade iMac for jukebox, Apple TV2, iPad, iPhone 4. If someone asks my opinion of the stuff I will tell how it works best for me. But if someone is asking advice, I ask, what do you want to do with it?

There are crazed missionaries for both sides of the debate/argument. It can be an interested discussion at times.

Apple isn't perfect, though for me they pretty much are. Every OS X update has been solid gold and made things easier for me as a pro user. Though the next release is looking pretty "bleh" based on the sneak peak they gave.

See this is the type of comment that makes me laugh and shows me that the majority of people in this thread don't even know what they are talking about.

I just have one question for you: Have you tried all other UI's from all other phones and companies, I am going to guess the answer is no?

I am asking because if you had tried the Webos UI you will know that it is far superior than the IOS, the only one that has true multitasking with it's cards UI, now go on and tell me how many apps apple have ;)

If you want to see true multitasking (done by a user). Then let me know if apple can do this?

Exactly... Most consumers just want a product that works. They don't care "how" it works.
I'm in that group.
iPhone, Android... Whatever.
All I want to do is make a few calls, send a few text messages and surf a little on the web.
And I want to do that for as little $ per month as possible.
Isn't it ****in' amazing enough that you can communicate with anyone anywhere in the world at any time... 'Hell... I can remember having to carry dimes so I could pull over and use a pay-phone...
That the guy next to me has a cellphone that is 10% faster/clearer/cooler doesn't really matter to me...
I have the iphone 3GS.... 'Works for me and unless I lose it or crush it I don't see looking for a replacement.
It works as advertised.

I'll gladly admit that while the task switching on my phone isn't quite as slick as that is (rather than flipping between screenshots of the current state, it just shows the application icon) it is certainly there. I was just listening to music, while switching between a game, email, web browsing and the fb app. In all cases, the state of the app was saved between switches.

http://www.androidcentral.com/froyo...h-between-your-eight-most-recent-applications

The OS I'm running (http://www.cyanogenmod.com/) (which is possible due to the open-source nature of android) has some added features, among which is the ability to increase the number of recent apps shown as high as 15. Downside is that it shows recent applications. So even if you exit something, it shows up in the list. It would be nice to be able to force an application to remain in memory while also being able to flip though screens like that. No doubt that webos task switcher is super slick.

Also, an interesting read, unrelated to task switching, written by an engineer on the android team, and one of the reasons I like android so much: http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/12/its-not-rooting-its-openness.html

That looks like an awful lot of frantic activity. Buddy should look up from his phone. Or maybe just call his friend and ask him if he has a preference for Chinese, and where?

I don't know, those ads made me feel stressed out. Maybe that's what Apple's "marketing" is all about - making people feel good about using their technology in their actual lives, instead of a hyper-accelerated potential life that they probably don't want to have.

Did that first guy ever get where he was going, or did he get hit by a car on the way?

And FYI, "afong" is on your side. I think.

I don't think I'll run 15 packages total lol
-SIP client
-Music
-Photo manager
-Maps
-Video player/recorder
-IM client
-Facebook client is a BIG maybe.. I don't feel the overwhelming need to post an "I'm taking a dump @ work" status update

So, I see a total of maximum 9, with maybe some other incidentals.

haha! agreed. I regularly use
the phone,
messaging,
gtalk,
browser,
maps,
winamp (nicer than stock; though rumour has it stock music player is getting an overhaul in honeycomb),
pulse (news reader),

and then occasionally
the camera,
photo gallery,
facebook.

But there are definitely some users out there who'd use 15 apps.

With Webos you can have up to 50 cards open and be able to flick in between them (don't know anyone that needs to have 50 apps running but the ability is there)

In no way I am putting down any other OS (except for Rim, come on they need to get their crap together) but it just drives me nuts when someone says that the Iphones UI is better than any other.

I have used every OS available, from Cybians to the Iphone 4 and Nexus 1 and many android versions and until someone comes up with something better than what Palm did and i just demonstrated on the videos, I will be using my Palm Pre. The difference is that I am willing to switch to any other operating system as long as it is better, unlike guys like poser and iridebilkes that drink from the apple Kool-Aid.

Mikey, yeah I'd obviously also use the phone and browser, but that's still below 15. I'm gonna have to look into some of my favourite packages and see if they have an Android port. Linphone does, and I plan on using it at least until the Gingerbread update for One comes out.

Maybe once I wrap up this thesis, I'll make that my pet project. See if I can get something like the webOS "card switching" integrated into Android. Ahh, the advantages of open-source! haha!

lol I think he walked into the neighbors house and got shot.

I know these cases are a bit extreme, but after you are able to flick between applications for real daily activities you will find it awkward to use any other phone, when i do, I always find myself using gestures to get out of something to go into something else and having to push buttons for that is just so 2000's, i just want to trow the Iphone/nexus whatever out the window.

Why push a button to close an application can i can just flick it up, why push a button to go to the main app screen when i can just use a gesture to switch. Give it a try, go to rogers and try the palm 2, you will see what i am talking about

ZX, if there is enough interest in those features, someone in the community will code an implementation and release it. That's a huge benefit of an open platform

Even better than the "multitasking" is "just type", here is a demo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixPsB7-tVGo

Basically, if you let's say want to find a website, most OS will have you open the web browser and then type the name of the webite, with just type from anywhere in the phone or any screen just start typing and it will show up

I agree, I have 124 parches installed on my phone to do anything from changing colors on screens to increasing from 500MGz to 1000 MGz.

I love open source because it allows smart people out there anywhere to enhance the phone given to you out of the box.

You guys need to remember that until you experience the awesomenessss of adding patches to an open source phone you really wouldn't know what is all about, so don't try to convince the Iboys, they won't get it and will start talking about amount of apps and the "safety" of a locked OS bla bla bla

...and Oh my I just realized I am a geek
