who's still riding? (in toronto)

Cold starts alone will not catapult your engine. Do they cause premature wear? Sure, that's not uncommon knowledge. But trying to convince everyone that a cold start = engine death is a little over the top. My car has a timing chain, has 200k on it, still running. My other car, again a timing chain, again over 200k, and again still running. My bike's been run as low as -7*C and at over 22k it's still running. As soon as I get heated gear it'll be run even lower.

Ever think you may have just been unlucky?

I thought most cam chain tensioners were automatic these days.

My Car has 316,000 km and no issues with the timing chain. (Oil changed every 15,000 km synthetic. Stsart and go, never sit and warm up unless windshield is iced up.)

My 2006 DL650 V-Strom has 202,000+ km, was routinely ridden in winter temperatures (down to -16c) and also up to 52c (126f) With no issues.
My 2012 has about 82,000 km on it. It lives outside all the time. I htink the coldest I have riddin it is around -12c.

I suggest that cold itself isn't the reason for the problem he had. Maybe wrong oil, maybe bad maintenance, maybe bad habits (like sitting there idling) probably just bad luck.

Given the source of these cam chain explosions, i'd say it's a fable (or black helicopters)

I remember reading reviews of the K1300S and in the photos there was snow all around. Possibly the temp was above 0c, though... But in Europe do those guys "winterize" ??

Further reflections on the K1300S in winter.

After sitting outside all day at -7c yesterday, its battery seems a bit low on cold-cranking-amps. It was really struggling to turn over, then had to be forced to churn on its starter for 10 seconds, and then it ran _really_ rough for the first 30 seconds with some moderate throttle pressure to keep it going while its block warmed up.

Afterwards, it was perfectly content to be riding around at -7c, if you can ignore the sounds of salt pinging off its fairings and cooler. Certainly snapper than around that -2c - +2c range where it likes to hesitate.

Today this guy was making the KTM sing in downtown streets. A much needed soundtrack at this time of the year :)

2013+-+1

I'll be riding tonite.lol Yabadabado who cares who's still riding or not!?

Funny seeing RWD cars stuck or drivers too scared to drive and pull off to the in a live lane creating more havoc

One poor sod is sitting at a corner he took too tightly ....almost bare pavement around him but he's sitting there spinning his wheels in a mound of snow and slush....looked very strange.

Took the KLX out today for a quick boot to an abandoned gravel pit by my house. Unfortunately the snow was to soft and deep to get too far but it was nice to be out.

Got out for about a 75km ride yesterday (Monday, Dec. 30). Roads were in excellent shape and besides the chill, it was a beautiful sunny day.

Riding?? Hell I'm not walking outside....

Lovely - can't recall the last time it was -22 in Toronto.

unfortunately, I had to walk for at least 15 minutes from the station to work. It's not fun at all. Out of the 25 years i've been here, I don't remember it being this cold...or perhaps it's been awhile.

According to Newstalk 1010 at 6 am this morning the windchill was -34C commentator said same thing couldn't remember it being this cold in a LONG time. His producer chimed in it was -35 windchill 5 years ago this month. It is just as we age we can't handle the cold like we used to. BTW it was -22 in Toronto when I left Port Perry this morning it was -28 without the windchill..lol Obviously in my cage. Not ruining my bike with all the salt and sand. look at ANY parking lot they are all just WHITE with the salt cover.

My Thermometer said -29.

I wish I could ride! I'd have to shovel and pick out 50 feet of ice to get my car to my ice-covered Driveway. Then I'd have to navigate 50 feet of ice-covered driveway to get to my ice-covered road. If I managed to get it to the road I would find clear pavement in about half a KM.

I don't think I'll be riding for a while. :(

With the rate our winter is going, what date do you reckon we can start riding again? Tom, I know you ride in crazy weather so i'm asking for us somewhat fairweather folks. lol

Yep, Tom doesn't count. He's in a world of his own.

I expect around the second week of March, about 70 days from now. Start counting down. Of course, a January thaw would be nice. Last January 12 I rode in lovely 13° weather.
