Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2024 Edition)

Still riding daily, but tried something different today. Loaded the electric thing on the truck, drove down to the Don Valley, unloaded, and went for a little ride.

Mandatory kick-off at Brickworks pic. The calm before the storm.

By 5:30 pm I had already gotten lost and it looked like this out:

I got lost 2-3 more times in the dark and eventually came up on some sorry mountain biker using his phone's flash as a light. I offered to stay behind him to provide him with light from my headlight in exchange for him getting us both back to the main trail.

Well, that fucker got us lost too. By the time we got back to the main trail I said "Thanks so much, see ya later!" and left him there.

In the end I was out about 3.5 hours, rode only about 1.5 hrs, and had an average moving speed of just13.5 km/hr...

Moral of the story: Stop working earlier in the day next time.
I'm going to need more details. What's that bike and where exactly did you take it? Sounds like my kind of adventure.

A camera is what I needed when it first happened, as the bike was upright on the centre stand. I hoped the gasket didn't slide too far down into the tank. Eventually I had to move the bike, so there's no doubt that now it is at the bottom somewhere. The tank is so narrow down there, that Its almost impossible to imagine retrieving it now. I have 3 of those claw tools. They all have a strong springy outer, which defaults to straight. I would need one that can hold its shape to be pre-bent to fit down into the crevice. i have never seen one that can hold a bent shape. Thanks for the offers, guys. I think I'm down to 2 options: Leave it there and forget about it until I need to change the fuel pump or its attached filter, or drain and remove the tank and turn it upside down. I'll probably do the latter, because knowing it's there is gonna bug me. But I'll probably wait until Spring.

What about a tiny vacuum hose after draining - maybe something like this ?

Sunday is looking like a prospect. Lots of rain between now and then to wash any crap away that they've decided the roads needed.

Planning with a bud for something. Once again, the eternal question though....where to go.

Since you are already east, how about a nice lunch in Calabogie at the Redneck Bistro and on your way there or back, hit up the newly paved South Lavant Road.

I thought about something like that. I could make one with stuff I have. I'm fearful of gas fumes accumulating in my vacuum to the point of explosion. Maybe it would be neat to blow up a shop vac, but then I'd need to buy a new one.

Yeah, don’t use a shop vac for flammable vapours, they’re absolutely not designed for that - the motor and brushes and all sorts of electrical bits are not only exposed, but often cooled by the very air you vacuum.

Ah good point. Here's another possibly crazy idea that is likely not as easy as just tipping the bike over and using a garden hose, but fun to think about.

Use the venturi effect and something like the outlet of a shop vac or leaf blower or compressor to create the suction at one end of a hose while exhausting any tank vapours at the other end of the hose and avoiding possibility of drawing vapours into the vac/blower/compressor

Just looked it up and there are lots of devices like this on Amazon, driven by air compressors. Look up "vacuum generator".

Here's a video of someone jury rigging the same idea with a couple of parts you probably already have. If it's good enough for Cajuns, it's probably good enough for us!

How much surface area does the fuel filter have? Compare that with the size of the offending paper. You should now feel better about just leaving it where it is.
edit- just looked up 85k100 fuel system. The fuel strainer is the size of a coffee cup! Leave it.

I'm up for a ride but I'm also on the wrong side of the GTA.....

It's about the size of a nickel. It's in my V Strom. There are 4 separate inlets to a strainer about the size of a flip phone. I think I will leave it until the next time I need or want to remove the fuel tank, like for air filter service, which I recently did. Removing it is a PIA.

I'm gonna have to plead the fifth on where I ride so I don't self-incriminate... and I wouldn't want to give you any potentially illegal advice... So instead let me tell you what you totally should not do:

1) Do not get something quiet/electric so you can be so stealthy and slow when people are around, and stupid and reckless when they aren't.

2) Do not go to trailforks' map page, here: https://www.trailforks.com/trails/map/?nearby=1

3) Do not go to the top left corner of that page and select "MOUNTAIN BIKE"

4) Do not play with the filters which let you select trail types like single or double track, paved or gravel, rail trails or wilderness trails, etc. and definitely do not use these filters to map out the trails that Karens definitely won't be on.

5) If you're hauling your electric toy in, you definitely should not use Google Streetview to find a quiet residential street you'll leave your SUV/truck at, and you definitely could not also use Google Maps to find a nearby community center, a nearby cemetery, or a nearby hockey arena with a parking lot to park in either.

All of this would be very very bad and would really upset the squares if they found out you did this.

For about a week now I've been riding almost every night, then getting naked and wet, and then riding back home again.

That ends tonight.

Don't worry, I'm not breaking up with anyone's mom. And no, I'm not putting my Harley-Davidson Girlsbike away for the winter either.

But tomorrow I should finally be getting hot water at home like a 21st century human! Since last Monday I've had no hot water, so I gotta get on the bike and ride to a hot shower every night or every other night.

Fun fact: Warranties on tankless water heaters are like 15 years, so even though mine was 8 years old, and I didn't have any receipts because the previous owner put it in, I reached out to the manufacturer, sent them a bunch of pictures that they asked for, along with the serial number, and they're giving us a totally free unit which saves thousands of dollars.

We had a similar situation with a component in the furnace a few years ago... Moral of the story, your house **** is probably covered by warranty, go annoy the manufacturer, they'll probably give you new stuff for free.

Went out today for a couple of hours. Light rain off and on and a mean wind. It was warmer than I thought 6-7 degrees.
I had the heated liner and gloves but on lowest setting. I put on the one piece Aerostich as I hadn’t worn it since spring. I don’t remember the back pad being so obtrusive, it kept shoving the bottom of my helmet. The ‘stitch didn’t leak so that good. Topped up the tank once more with some stabilizer. Hoping for one more ride before the snow and salt/brine flies.

I thought about going out today when for a few hours this morning the sun was peeking through and it seemed kinda nice, but the roads were still wet and then this weird light fog rolled in for a period of time. Between damp roads and then damp air, I decided otherwise.

Tomorrow not looking good now. As always, what was forecasted 3-4 days ago didn't end up being reality. :/

Looking at next Thursdays forecast, it might be time to get the Ryobi snowblower down out of the rafters in the garage. You know, if that forecast actually holds.

Sheeesh. Time's have changed, growing up i'd be handed a shovel and told to earn my dinner.

I've reached the "Everything hurts" stage, I'm done shoveling by hand when there's an easier way at hand.
