Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2018 Edition)

Re: Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2018 Edition)

Here's hoping... Feb has been pretty terrible with at least one storm every week. If the spring like conditions do arrive after a few weeks, I hope they last.
Yep! Another 10-15cm of snow in the GTA tomorrow.....larger amounts along the lakeshore. UGH!

FWIW before 2016 I never got a chance to get out in February, and rarely in January. Since then it have been able to get out a bit every month of the year. In 2017 2,270 km before the end of Feb, last year 1,590 km for end of Feb, and this year looks like I will be stuck at 1,743 km before the end of Feb. So for all the crappy weather there still were a few nice days to ride.

I've had a nasty cold so haven't ridden for a bit even though there have been several nice days that were very rideable. I did get out today for an hour and a bit. Weather said it was going to stop raining but it kept drizzling the whole time. I hadn't washed my bike since the fall so decided it was time to give it a bit of a wash and did that just before getting home.

So you ride all winter with no washing and it doesn’t effect the condition of your bike?
I’ve been rinsing after every short ride out of fear that my bike will turn into a big ball of corrosion.

This will be the first spring in many years that i am going to hold off and wait till the roads are cleaned up.I bought a really clean used Ducati in January and spent a lot of time detailing it.

Naaaah,**** it!

I kept meaning to wash it. :)

Here is how it looked before washing:

Yeah they don't seem to rust that quickly. I'm beginning to think some of the stuff people use to clean the bike causes corrosion.

I think this is irrelevant for this topic but I started riding in March for 2019 season. From 9th March to be precise.

I am curious how dirty you are getting riding in less favourable conditions? Car spray and such.
...

I try and avoid the worst of the road-spray days.

When I get caught in them the bike gets coated but the worst part is keeping the faceshield clean. I carry a dry and wet microfiber cloth in my tank bag but if it is going to be really messy I will probably drive.

I don't think this counts, because I trailered the bike to Virginia, but I got my first long ride in yesterday from Bluefield VA to Charleston SC.

I've got a system for the faceshield that works great. I use one of those kitchen brush thingys that have a reservoir for soap. Fill the reservoir with rainex. Attach a piece of microfiber cloth over the bristles with an elastic band.

In use, I pull it out of the pocket of my tank bag, and push the button on it to release rainex into the microfiber. Wipe off the faceshield. Look left and right to blow off the beads of rainex. I couldn't have gotten it cleaner if I'd stopped to do the job.

I cut the bristles off the brush, but that probably wasn't necessary.

I may ride to my mechanic this coming Saturday as it's only 6km from my place and it's going to be 2c. Rain and 12c weather on Thursday may help the roads a bit.
If the roads are still caked on Saturday I'll re-schedule....may just man up though as it will only take me 8-10mins to get ride it there or take a nice hwy boot to get all the fluids moving at operating temp after the winter storage.

Fresh salt thrown all over the place out here again.

Argh. And just after all the rain washed things so clean.

Darn! I have my fingers crossed for this Saturday.

Looks like no salt will be laid down....and that's what I am always the most concerned about.
Bikes been sitting in underground for the last 3 months (battery on tender inside house) and it's about -2c or so down there. Should I let my bike sit outside somewhere a bit warmer before starting it up, or should I be ok? Usually hovers around the 5c mark underground but the last couple weeks have been oh so cold!
Older fella in my building that rides a Thruxton said he always lets it sit in the sun for a bit before his first ride to let everything kind of expand....never heard of anyone doing this before though. I guess he was saying that in regards to all the metal parts with seals condensing with the cold weather ?

I think his blinker fluid is a bit low.

Anyone planning on riding this Thursday? Weather is looking pretty promising. I'm just thinking that all of the snow banks that will be melting might make some of the roads a mess.
Double digits....so tempting

thats my main concern to be honest. the place where i park at work is still full of ice and snow banks. roads are looking fine though for the most part!

Some people go to ridiculous extremes with their motorcycles when it comes to what they envision in their head (or their third uncles brothers cousin told them, or they read online somewhere) as being something they need to do to "avoid damage" or whatever.

Just start it. Let it idle for 10-15 seconds to move oil to all the places it hasn't reached all winter long, and then ride without going WOT or anything crazy for the first 10-20 minutes of the ride.

Whatever that guy is doing, well...I guess if it makes him feel better, whatever floats his boat. But it's kinda silly.

x2.

I’m planning a ride Thursday, double digits should feel balmy this time of year. Fired the bike up yesterday to make sure it’s ready.

It actually looks like it is snowing outside right now (in Scarb just a few flakes).....<sigh> will this $hit never end... I use to like winter much more before riding, but now I just want to get the bike out for a run.
