Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2018 Edition)

Rode a bit yesterday for mylast ride of 2018. Ended up with 50,294 km during 2018. Hoping to get out in a while for my first ride of 2019.

Wow that is a lot of riding. I am usually around 15,000 or so between two bikes. I would go for a ride today...maybe I will. Tomorrow for sure tho...for work...yuck!

Put the FZ for storage beginning of December.

Planning on eventually getting a 2nd bike, some beater dual-sport that I wouldn't care about getting dirty or covered in road salt to ride in whatever weather including snow. Probably a couple years or so away, content to wait for March now.

Took the bike out for some errands yesterday. The forecast is too sketchy for me to commute to work.

My vstar 1100 is my daily jammer. It's a fun reliable bike.

Hah little too big for me, would have to be something on the light side to practice some wheelies or skid in the dirt without worry of dropping.
Pampering the FZ too much to actually do some hooligan stuff.

Oh I have skidded this in the dirt lots of times, I take it camping. ;) It doesnt go down. I like the weight on the highway, I wish it were bigger actually, without all the fairings and **** you see on bigger bikes.

Well it's several things.

I consider my bike my main wheels from March until November/December. I'll ride pretty much any time there isn't ice or snow on the roads (or risk of them.). I commute with the bike daily. I did two longish rides in 2018 that added up to about 20,000 km. I do weekend rides all the time. I was out yesterday for a bit. Right now I'm starting the year with a little ride. (Port Perry, Lindsay, Sutton - I'm in Sutton right now having a coffee - and then home.)

If snow gets removed from tomorrow's forecast I'll ride in to work tomorrow.

I just ride a lot but it never really feels like enough. :)

be extra careful out there...drivers arent expecting bikes this time of year

Does it take a long time to start (mornings) in this weather? I was assuming most carb bikes will struggle to start in this weather.
I am one of those sick puppies that picked his apartment based on the underground parking. It is in an old building by the lake that literally has only 6 parking spots. I have one spot for both bikes, I do all my maintenance there, I just did my valve service on the gixxer over the holidays. It is old radiator heating so in the morning my bike is already about 25c, at night in the parking lot the bike starts right away, but takes time to warm up before I can leave...maybe 10 minutes. There was only one day when the bike didnt want to start, last september I was camping in tobermory and it rained every day. The bike was under a tarp mostly, eventually it started. The vstar has been a very reliable bike. More so than the gsxr.

Lucky you. My garage is about 2-5C in the morning. No chance in hell my carb 250cc would start. I am looking to upgrade to a Fuel Injected cruiser soon, and hopefully extend my riding days year round.

It should go. Snowblowers fire up. Does it get good spark? Listen I drove a vw beetle back in university in manitoba and that sucker started in -30c no problems. It had no heat mind you, and I had to scrape frost on the inside of the car as I was going.

Pretty much every engine up until 15-25 years ago when fuel injection started to become a thing was carbureted remember, and *most* small engines (powersport toys aside) still are carb'd. Back when I was a hard core snowmobiler I remember when fuel injection just started to poke it's head into the scene around 1989, but fuel injection didn't really start to become mainstream until the late 90's and early 2000's.

Some of the even entry level motorcycles (like the Shadow for example) were still carb'd up until 8-9 years ago. I suspect there's no shortage of small CC / budget motorcycles that still are.

And you can buy 2019 snowmobiles that are still carb'd.
Every small snowblower out there is carb'd.
Lots of things designed for the winter are still carb'd.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is....being a carb'd engine doesn't automatically mean it won't start in the cold.

My VTX1300 isn't a huge fan (it needs lots of choke for the first 5 minutes or so) but it starts fine. My wife's 1100 also starts in subzero with little fanfare.

Then there's a bigger problem somewhere else, likely one of these:

- Your choke isn't working, or isn't closing fully.
- Your battery is weak. Too slow of a cranking speed can be an issue with a carb'd bike, especially in the cold.

With a good strong fast crank and a fully closed carb there's no reason whatsoever it shouldn't start...assuming you have spark and fuel.

Yeah- that's what I meant...I needed to use my choke for about 2-3 mins and allow my bike to get warmed up before i could start riding out during late fall. And I was assuming it would take longer to start up at much colder temp.

Only 1 way to find out- This weekend seems to be warmer temp, so I am gonna try taking it for a spin in the morning.

Probably both. I recently got my choke assembly repaired with @frekeyguy (last week)..I haven't had a chance to test it out yet. And probably the battery is a bit long in the tooth too.
