Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2018 Edition)

I’m eyeballing Sunday, if for nothing else, at least a trip to the gas station to get the stabilizer through things, and fill the tanks on both bikes.

I may continue on. My wife, doubtful. If I get her out at all lol.

Rode down yonge st this morning - 4c. Only biker out there lol. Dry roads but very comfy ride. Probably packing up the season next week. Salt is a pain in the *** apparently for bikes.

I was out there!

I rode in to Vaughn from Port Perry this morning. -7 when I left home, I think a balmy -4 when I arrived.

Salt is a great excuse not to ride!

Corrosion is a myth according to some folks.Just don't buy a bike from them.

Haha. My plan is to ride until constant snowfall and salty roads. Then wait until global warming to kick in come March.

just got back to ON
first time since mid August
was hoping it would be ~10 degrees, and maybe some sun
put a few miles on
instead all I can do is drain the ethanol gas
get some decent stuff in there with stabilizer
change the oil, and put the batt tender on
bummer...

That only applies when the ground it frozen and it's not yet.
Sort of, but not completely correct. Ice starts to melt when it's surface temp hits 0F. If there is 1" of freeze, that piece of ice may stay frozen for quite some time after the temp rises. It's been +4 all day here and I still have ice on my driveway and deck.

If you're riding a 2016 VSTROM (like mine) in the salt, prepare to be shocked by the corrosion a little salt brings on. A few late rides last year on salty roads tore the plating off my spokes, turned every hydraulic fitting orange, and white crusted a lot of aluminum. Want to see?

Just say NO to salt!

Fine steel wool to clean it up and coat it with pure tung nut oil is the best I've found. Works on woodwork shop tools like chisels and planes, alloy or painted rims, good on brass sailboat parts too.
Is a food safe natural harden oil that you can apply with anything including your finger  do it when you put the bike away, it dries very slow in cold, polishes up shiny. (use only pure, don't use polymerized it contains solvents to promote fast dry)

Commuted to work last night. A little over a hour each way. Bar heaters combined with bar mitts are the sh_t!

For some reason this morning I took a backroad on the way home, which suddenly brought me onto ice patches. No harm done; all the gravel riding I did this summer probably helped. Last time for that particular road for a while though.

what kind of bar mitts do you have? im considering getting some barkbusters but i feel like they cost more than they should.

My bar mitts (handlebar gauntlets) are fur. My first choice is to make them from beavers however most furs will do - unbeatable for wind protection and dryness. I've tried a few off the shelf creations, the only modern creations I likes were made from neoprene (wetsuit material). The nylon and polyester snowmobile versions you can find online (Moafner, Moose, Bikemaster etc) are lousy for motorcycling because they wick moisture and soak your hands.

I used to make gauntlets them in my sewing shop, don't know where you can buy them today. If I can find my old patterns, I'll post them here. All you need is a cheap used fur coat off Kijiji and about 2 hours to cut and stitch.
