Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2018 Edition)

Today is the first day since sometime in March that I didn't ride in to work because of weather (or more because of the potential on snow and ice on the road when I get home after 7 this eve.)

Ironically last night was the first time in weeks that I saw any other bike on the road and I saw two.. one westbound on Stouffville Rd a bit after 6 pm and one westbound on Goodwood between (I think) hwy 12 and Lakeridge.

Hopefully the weather will settle next week. I need to ride a bit less than 3,000 km to hit 50,000 km for the year and about 4,800 km to hit 160,000 km total on my 2015 V-Strom DL1000. :)

Yesterday wasn’t too bad if you dressed properly. Glad I got out for the afternoon. Today...not so much.

Yesterday was nice, 4 of us were riding,
today :( wet snow 2 inches
:) but it didn't stop my excavator
and the snow won't stay because there is no frost in the ground.

You might have seen me. I was returning from Orillia, I came west on my DL650 from Manchester on Goodwood Rd to 10th, then west of Stouffville Rd to 48 -- I'd have passed there just after 6. It was OK heading out, chilly heading back.

The timing sounds right and with the oncoming headlight glare I couldn't make out which kind of bike it was. I did wave but I doubt you would have seen the wave.

I saw someone turn onto 48 from ravenshoe minutes before the snow squall struck. Just got back from Florida and I'm wondering why I came back
On the other hand, I got some snowmobile bar mitts from Canadian tire that I'm looking forward to trying out

Done for the year folks. Just put everything away today. Snowblower at the ready. HD and Honda under blankie. C-ya next spring.

Went out today to start the bike as I haven't had it running in about a month. Battery wasn't completely dead but didn't have enough juice to start it, so I ended up bump starting it. Went for a 10 minute ride after to charge the battery, but thats all I could handle. Hands got way to cold even with latex gloves under my regular gloves.

That won't fully charge your battery.

Going out for a ride right now to put some air in my tires and some fuel/stabilizer incase I don't get out again. Front tire only has 18psi...I always check pressure at this time of year cause they tend to lose a bit or air with the cold temps.
They are saying next week we might see double digits again tho!

Just saw a couple of riders on Hwy 7 in Markham, nice. . I am in my car.

Eh it was good enough.

Nope, probably barely replaced what it took to start the bike.

If you don't get it on a tender on it or at least charge it back to 100% sooner than later some other way that battery is going to freeze at the first hard cold snap, and you'll be looking for a new battery in the spring. A battery that was barely able to start your bike is probably floating under the 40% SOC mark, and that drastically lowers it's freezing point.

If you're curious, its OCV is 12.91V right now. Doing so great it's off of your chart...

She'll be fine man. Don't worry about it.

Quite possibly just a surface charge.

Logic dictates the battery can't be at 100% SOC if it couldn't start the bike, so it was clearly in a low SOC already. Your bike has a small 200w stator. A 10 minute ride no matter what speed and RPM you drove at wouldn't be enough to replenish any significant amount of actual charge to the battery, especially after it was further depleted by attempting to unsuccessfully start the bike to begin with using the starter.

It would be enough to provide a light surface charge however which can indeed provide false OCV readings. Go turn the key on and leave all the lights running for 5 minutes or so, turn it all off, and test it again immediately after.
