What's going on with #StopAsianHate?

well this escalated quickly.

I get his (@ChrisCBR) point of view and don't think it's wrong.

I've heard it from fellow white buddies who also feel repressed by the media. I don't think the way the media is sending information is helping anyone tbh.

An odd side product of the BLM and #StopAsianHate stuff is the radical racists have come out in full force on Facebook and other social media outlet. So we end up with tension between ethnicities (especially those with homogeneous groups of friends)....and have given the racists a reason to come out and be racist lol

A big reason why China has gotten to where China is is because they made America believe they agreed with the "this is the better way." America then continued to strike deals with the "submissive Chinese", and now they've created a monster that had no intention of staying leashed lol
Not buying it. china got where it is because it's a dictatorship. When you can turn your own citzens into hapless slaves with no voice or political power. And totally disregard the envirnoment and other people's copyrights and patents it's very easy to produce cheap goods

When your labor cost is effective zero things get made cheaper.

Ugh. Swore I'd step out, but can't leave it.

I have no beef with a discussion around muting white voices and a cancel culture that says white people have zero say because of 'privilege.' There's lots going on there, particularly across generations. I especially have a problem with people applying modern perspectives to judge historical figures using modern concepts of ethics. Additionally, great swathes of rural impoverished whites, particularly in the southern US, have been marginalized, which has certainly helped feed monsters like Trump.

BUT, what I do have a problem with is citing other groups as "the real problem" without any nuance or understanding of the myriad of social forces and historical events that has created so many issues across racial lines, both here and in the US. Here, we have an indigenous population in many places still carrying the scars of residential schools and other policies, so we can't judge the US at all. A thread about racism and crimes towards Asians doesn't need to start pointing fingers at blacks or any other group. That was my only beef.

And with that, I really will step away. I'm here to talk about bikes, and am kicking myself for wading into other parts of the pool...

So who enabled them?

There's two ******** in that equation lol

I don't know if I've made this clear: I don't like either China or USA. It's like choosing an ******* that'll openly stab your wife, and another that'll stab your wife and blame your brother.

Also, because of my work, I am very anti copyright. I don't want to get into it; many software devs are the same because progression > profits. I'm bringing the above two points up to emphasize it's not black and white.

Forums like this are the only places left for open discussion sadly. Friends are often echo chambers (we are friends with those who think alike), and Reddit is a cesspol of an echo chamber. So I appreciate the different views.

I quickly googled it
China's mind-blowing growth in the last 3 decades has surprised the world. Today, all the big factories are establishing their manufacturing plants in China, making it the world's leading economic superpower. Till 1978, it was one of the least developed nations of the world.Aug. 10, 2019.
I
think one time they were on the brink of starvation

I never cited any group as the real problem. I simply pointed out the double standard of giving other groups a pass and then attacking white people when they do the same thing.

See what I wrote above. If people are going to talk about violence and racism against Asians perpetrated by white people (which is the narrative that has been put forward since the Atlanta shootings), then they better be prepared to discuss non-white on Asian crime also.

How is that fair? I come up with a great idea and you steal it. I might be anti you if that's your attitude.

Because advancement of the field as a whole is more important than an individual's profit.

This is a east vs west mentality btw, I just double downed on it because of my profession. Look up open-source software for a better explanation.

Blame Bill Gates. There was eutopia before he realized that he could be rich by changing the system from working for the good of all to working for him.

I understand what you mean about copyright, but I am mostly on the side of it's a good thing. A company will not pay employees to innovate if that innovation cannot generate a return for the company. That leaves innovation in the hands of volunteers which can work, but at a much slower pace as they have less hours available than the collective might of business.

Well, only skimmed this hot-button thread but on Twitter I saw a terrible video of an Asian guy getting badly beaten by a black guy on a New York subway. I was disgusted by it.

Then I saw this vid of a little old Asian woman on her way to Church getting stomped by some black guy, again in New York.

All I have to say is the anti-Chinese rhetoric in the media is ratcheting up and that, I believe, is spurring those short on intelligence to act out their anger, very unfairly, on certain Asians in North America. Now, I believe most of the problem lies in the USA where media is most fierce in their anti-China rhetoric however, I'm sure there are incidents to a much lesser extent and intensity in Canada.

Beware of the media's agenda to divide via racism. They pick out a couple of really bad incidents and use them like lightning bolts to spur anger. Just like the George Floyd murder and ensuing riots. These are not incidents representative of the common reality. The people you work with and see every day, likely of all colours and races, are surely all good people. That's reality. Not the mess we see on TV and the internet.

Colour isn't everything. A few years back I was talking to a guy and I mentioned being from Manitoba. He said he lived there for a while and couldn't wait to leave.

He and his wife lived in a small town. (Except for Winnipeg all of Manitoba is small town.) He felt everyone was snubbing them so he eventually cornered one of the snubbers and asked what the problem was. Answer: It's your wife. She's Polish.

There is a big fish in a small pond attitude in a lot of places. There are sections of the province that are as redneck as anywhere in the USA. IIRC he was in a predominantly Ukrainian area. Some of them are so smug about their heritage that they feel they are even above Ukrainians from Ukraine. My wife is first generation Canadian from Ukrainian parents (Not totally true but too long a story) and learned to speak Ukrainian from her parents who spoke true Ukrainian, not something that had been butchered over the generations.

It could go on forever. What part of Italy are you from?

Glasgow or Edinburgh?

I imagine this is how my Russian friends feel. Culturally they're closer to Asians or South Asians due to uprising. But color wise....go figure lol

Edit: on a similar personal note: Chinese hate Taiwanese and vice versa. I've experienced racism with a Chinese girl before and booted her out of my car when she told me "Taiwan isn't a country." Gtfo of my car then *****, and **** this date lol

Some, not all, immigrants think they are God's gift to Canada. It usually doesn't last too long and rarely transfers to the second generation.

In some cases an immigrant from a country with a huge number of extremely poor people arrives with an assumption of being upper class. In their homeland some develop a superiority attitude because they have some assets and an apartment, unlike here where we don't have the hoards of unwashed. Most people here have something and attitudes have to change.

A lady from Hong Kong told me she had to do a lot of adjusting financially because in HK you could get someone to come to your place and fix something for a dollar. Here it's a hundred just to show up.

Yup, nannies are super cheap too and they do it all, cook, clean, raise your kids.
Wish we had that kind of pricing here.

Had racist incidents in my younger years. Can't say I've seen it in the last while.
...oops forgot about the time a few years ago a salesman at the Richmond Hill Tasco Appliance store told me to get my "skinny yellow butt" out of the store cause I was asking too many questions about appliances. I was asking about multiple items cause I was buying for 2 households.
