What was this about

I live right behind this plaza and there are a lot of sketchy people living in the semi detached houses down there street from me. OP you did the right thing but next time call the cops. They also closed the police station in this plaza a few months ago. If it happens to anyone else in this plaza and you are to freaked out to ride right after pm me and come over for a beer until your nerves are back to normal.

Don't know much about OP's stature.
There's a reason I run, weight lift, mtn bike to remain fit. If someone were to try mugging me, I won't give it to them that easy

I stick to a shaved head and goatee. Much less hard on the body.

Do you also know how to fight and have a pyschotic temperament? If not, you may just be a really fit person that's had their butt kicked. If you haven't had experience being in a serious street fight, you don't want to underestimate the potential for lethal results to yourself if you decide to get into a fist fight with unknown assailants. I'd suggest your best use of your physical fitness is running.

As an example of the above, I know a big, strong fit guy who was a pretty good boxer and okay wrestler. He had some short little guy come at him and my friend believed he had all the advantages and took him on. The little guy was beating the crap out of my friend and was only stopped from doing permanent damage by three of us tackling him and holding him down. The little guy was experienced and demented. He'd go off like fireworks with no warning.

My point is, just be careful. Street fights are very dangerous.

Yep, use that fitness to run. The best thing you can do is defuse the situation or run. Don't fight unless there's a loved one with you and have no other choice. The OP handled it very well.

What would stop them from just taking your phone?

After putting on helmet, and you had a BT Headset, you could day "dial 9-1-1" without producing a cellphone.

I always thought u were the other type

If you are OK giving your stuff up for charity, that's OK.
I'm just giving you my stance on if someone were to try to steal my hard earned bike from my hands

When someone is joking or casual about how 'this is a stickup ha ha ha' it totally is a stickup and you make sure you call the cops. Note that you cannot joke around at the airport; your next bomb joke will land you in jail and ban you forever from going to the US.

So it goes when people start feeling you out for a hit.

p.s. and congrats how you handled it, basically calling their bluff.

Well put. It's hard to beat someone who has nothing to lose. To the OP, any way you walk away unscathed is a win.

Tongue in cheek, this would be a rare occasion of a burnout being a good thing while disappearing in a smoke screen.

I would have pulled out my phone, set it to camera, and asked them to smile.

That is some seriously ****ed up crap, though. I don't think I would have remained as calm as you. I would have told them to suck it.

Hey guys thanks for the input and replies. BTW I'm a guy for those who thought I might be otherwise. I'm kinda new to Brampton, been working here for quite awhile but just moved here last year due to circumstances and work. At the very least this situation has got my radar up now. Things down here are definitely not the same as the quiet towns up north from where I moved. If I may say it sucks to be in Brampton lol. Oh well life goes on. As for the situation, I was prepared to defend myself if necessary. I won't go looking for a fight, but I will defend myself leave it at that.
best regards

Carry a knife for cutting open packages and apples.

Next time this happens do some stabbing.

Those guys must have been joking with you. If they were really jacking you they wouldn't have moved out of the way. Maybe you have to develop a mean vacant look. Kind of that crazy, I'm snapping now kind of thing.

My buddy is trying that. Shaved his head, got a scowl going, vacant stare. Maybe join a self defense course and build some confidence. If you are from up north you gotta know people here are not as friendly.

Of course if you are from really far up north and got that squeal like a pig look going, well, people probably wouldn't mess with you either.

My opinion, sign up for a martial art. In 7-10 years you'll have a black belt and a world of confidence :)

This was in Brampton. Middle of the day 3 black males not drunk. I put my helmet on thinking
i was gonna have to give the guy beside me a head butt. An older guy here at work says
The only reason I didn't get mugged was because I showed no intimidation. I was in a bad mood at the time

It sounds like an attempted mugging, and they were gauging:

a) Their own ballz to go through with it. If they met with no resistence they propably would have followed through

b) If you hand over your keys, they might have banked on a technicallity that you let them have it, rather than forcibly mugged or explicitly threatened.

I was mugged by this approach once, which then turned violent when they felt they could follow through with it. I had another friend mugged for smokes in a similar fashion. They were quite upset he lied to them about not having smokes and slashed up his face with a broken bottle. This technique of mugging allows a gradual build up of "bravery" on their part, rather than an all or nothing approach which may cause them to rethink before initiating. But once your "in the moment", their adrenaline can take over. If you shrink in that type of situation they will mug you! If you bend and had over your stuff without an explicit threat, they will likely not face severe penalties either.

My mugging started with: "nice hat, where did you get it? Nice shoes too, can I have them?". The minute I baulked at such a silly question, I noticed the group circle me and instantly their bravado was upped several notches. I was caught off guard by the instant ratcheting of severity, as well as out flanked before I even had time to realize I was now in the middle of a mugging.

This tactic allows them to get real close while leaving your defences low, or delayed.

You gotta be like Bourne in these situations. Every man is a potential threat, and you should be running exit scenarios. Three men get out of a car and approach you....that's an instant threat alert, and be mindful of the worst scenario and prepare your exit strategy.

You played off a little too calm, but it seems to have worked. It's a win in my book! It forced their hand too, they either had to take a massive step up to indicate the threat level they intended, or be explicit (which risked serious charges), and likely they lacked the ballz or resolve to carry it out. Basically you called their bluff.

I also had a 13 year old kid on Queen try to mug me an my 18 year buddy at "gun point" on time using this tactic. He technically didn't pull the gun on us, but showed it holstered in his belt (rapper style). Retard was walking backwards (putting himself on terrible footing), and was 6" shorter than us. He was clearly out-manned, out muscled, and out footed, which led me to believe (after the fact) he had an extraordinarily high level of confidence, quite possible due to the rush of carrying a real gun. At the time, my buddy and I were so shocked by how absurd this attempted mugging was we actually laughed the kid off and told him to piss off and started sarcastically responding to him. It was only later that we rethought it might have been real and the kid was "testing" himself and his resolve as well as his potential victims. That situation ended with him telling us (after looking around, presumably at the masses of people around on Queen and John), "you're lucky there are so many people around this time". Dumb *** picked the situation so I hardly think we were lucky....it's not like the masses of people in broad day light just showed up!

To me, these types of scenarios sound like the beginnings of theft and thieves.

Good call on the helmet. I will also second the recommendation to get into the proper mentality for living in Brampton (or most places in the GTA) versus Northern ON. Whenever I have to drive back from school I need to be a different person. Guard up all the time, not making an easy victim, etc. Even at Bayview/Major Mac I had a similar situation in that parking lot, except with my car. Would've been 3 on 1 but I'm a big boy so they backed off when they realized I wasn't going to hand over my keys. It helps that they're on a lanyard that i wrap around my hand out of habit. Little things can tilt a one-sided situation back onto even footing. Criminals don't like even footing.

Most criminals are lazy cowards, both of which types aren't fond of actually having to work hard for the money they get.

Always easier to be tougher when the odds are 3:1 ... reminds me of a 2pac song....

Just to confirm details:

It was Saturday Aug 25th, morning?

- What mall? (intersection)
- Description of car these guys got out of?

Is there perhaps a coffee shop in this mall that would be worth popping in to? It sounds like just the sort of place to go and politely mind one's own business.

Sad to say. but i think they were just screwing around. wanted to see what you would say or do.

if it really was a jacking they would have done so.

for them it was ***** and giggles.
