what the **** is wrong with people?

Homeless people don't get cheques from the government. In order to qualify for social assistance, one of the stipulations is that one must have a permanent address.

The social resources our homeless have are actually glaringly scant.

Um seriously.... they do and they are under the NFA(no fixed adress) group of people that usually pic them up at the end of the month.

If you don't believe me just stand out front of any social services office at the end of the month and you will see.

You clearly didn't do your research, or it's changed since you were a kid.

I was a street kid. I received no money from the government.

I've been dealing with homeless for the past 11 years, talked to them try to help them. Most don't want help or don't like the help that is out there. It will blow your mind if you stand in a social service office and see who is getting checks. Also, there is the public gardien trusty who issues money to the homeless crazy people that have family with money but they can not handle their money so it's given to them weekly or as needed.

I'm from Toronto but I've been raised by old school religous parents and I help out where and when ever I can. I'm not able to turn my back. As for the homeless, I know they have all the resorces out there for them(whether or not they chose to use them is an other story) and even get checks and tokens from the government. I would never give them money as they are already getting our tax money. I will however give them food or drink or try to get them some shelter when it's cold out. Have the Street Help # programed in my phone.
Everyone says that...and it makes me wonder how often you're downtown, or where the hell you walk around downtown. 'Cause on a busy stretch of road, you'll get a lot of homeless people. You're gonna go broke trying to help out even just one block. Unless you just help one and that's your feel-good deed for the day?

Not trying to doubt that you're a good person - I'm just really curious 'cause it never adds up.

lol I guess you didn't read where I wrote "when ever I can". I'm not rich so I can't help all the time but when ever I can. My dad at least once a month goes shopping (trunk full)and drops off groceries at a church down town that feeds the pore and homeless.

Yeah theres also something to be said for people helping themselves out.....You can only do so much, at the same time homeless sometimes arent even willing to help themselves, Ive seen them turn down help of a shelter, Ive seen able bodied people still begging for money instead of getting a job, Ive seen homeless take handouts and head right to the LCBO for another bottle, so despite some peoples good efforts to try and help a homeless person when they can, it wont look like it made a difference if they arent going to help themselves.

Today a homeless guy made my day. Guy come in from up north, he's in town for two days and found a job. He's at our office getting some help to find somewhere to stay and get some money to start out with his new job. Doesn't want to stay in a shelter cause he is a recovering heroin addict(doen't want to be anywhere near drugs). He is awesome and I hope he makes it. Grabbed him some granola bars from the office snack bar cause he hasn't eaten all day and I could see he was getting slitely moody. He is seems to be pretty happy now and he will prob be in a better mood when he goes in for his meeting:)

Proof that if you want help to turn your life around, it's there.

I met a lot of street kids who had nowhere to go. Literally. Our system is ill-equipped to handle homeless youth (unless they've broken the law). We also have to remember that a lot of people have been shuffled out of mental health facilities because of cutbacks, and again, these people have nowhere to go. Being homeless also leads to depression and apathy, which explains why when some people are down on their luck, they turn down any help that is available to them.

Aw girl don't get me started on the mental health cut backs....makes me mad.

Everyone has there reasons, some people as stated above don't want to go near a shelter as it will trigger addictions, others can't because of past abuses at shelters. Some people are mentally ill due to past experiences (I know an engineer who had a great job, house and everything, lost it all when his wife and daughter died in a car crash, now he lives on the streets because he's not all there anymore). Don't put all the eggs in one basket, this is the same as walking by the little girl who was dieing.
Also, I don't give money to the homeless, but if I am grabing a sub or something, I might ask one of them if there hungry and if they want a bite to eat. Its not about being from the city or out of it, it depends on who you are. I've lived in Thunder Bay where homeless people were treated like dirt and I've lived in Toronto where they were treated the same way. All depends on the persons involved.
