What pickup truck do you use?

What do you guys think about a RWD pick up?
The only reason I was considering a 4x4 is so that I can get anywhere I need to in the winter months.
But realistically speaking, will a RWD be a pain or what?

I had a 2wd Toyota truck for years. As long as you are not trying to do unplowed cottage roads or some such, it's fine. Having said that, I've been stuck in the muddy paddock at Shannonville in my Jetta with the trailer behind...

Im a RWD F150, with traction lock rear end its very good in the snow. Im not saying it will run through a foot of snow like a 4x4, but reasonable speeds and cautious driving has gotten me a long way. I just didn't want to push the extra 1ooolbs of running gear around all summer because it wasn't really a requirement for what I do.

my duallie is 2wd absolutely terrifing in snow worst vehicle I have ever driven. I have an old OJ bronco for snow. if buying dualie go 4x4

if that means the back hard cover that comes off then yup. looks just like the one Al Cowling was driving when OJ was cowering in back. Even white :) mine has a plow though.

Sorry, couldn't resist. During the Simpson trial, in our HVAC biz we used to joke about A.C. Cowlings as air conditioning cowling.
OK, back to regular programing.

haha didn't put that together. but yup to AC cowling :-D

My last two trucks have been 4x4, I can only really think of a handful of times I've actually needed it, to me it's worth it, and it will also help for resale.

Same.

I had 2 wheel drive for years, and got stuck with it multiple times.

Had 4x4 for for the last 5 years, and only been stuck with it once. Actually got stuck so bad it took 2 tow trucks, and a massive John Deere Tractor to get all of us out.

Years ago when I drove tow truck our running joke was the biggest difference between 4wd and 2wd was the extra 200ft of chain you had to take along for the guy with 4wd that was sure he could get through anything. The ironic part was I would drive into the middle of no where and hook out guys in a 2wd dually. But I also had dual winches and ground tackle so self rescue was always an option.

So true.

We always find the big SUV's and 4x4 so much further off the road in an accident.

I've gotten 4x4 GMC 2500 stuck in the snow a couple of times in. They reduced the ground clearance on the newer models so it doesn't take much. My WRX could probably go through close to the same stuff.

Last week I was driving a 2wd Chevy Express van up in the Soo and it was ok. It did almost get stuck in 4" of snow once. Without the stability control it would've been all over the road once it was unloaded. We also found out that the traction control cannot be fully turned off. As soon as it starts getting fun it turns itself back on. :-(

Love my 4x4 Ram! I live out in the country so it sure helps when they take forever to plow the back roads around here... haven't been stuck yet, and hauled around a few bikes in the 6 foot bed.

That's because there's an abundance of idiotic fools who don't realize that just because their 6000+ lb 4x4 has great acceleration in the snow that it's braking doesn't improve with it. I remember driving a mustang gt in the winter when I was younger and I used to honk and wave to all the tools in the ditch with their big bad trucks.

What type are driving do you do when youre getting double the mileage in the diesel?

Both trucks loaded with tools, sheet metal, furnaces, a/c's etc. Equal mix of city/hwy driving gas 550km to approx 130l, diesel 1000km to same size tank, straight hwydriving gas mabe 750, diesel 1200km. I personally wouldn't buy any other diesel on the market.

I drive an 05 dodge ram 2500hd, cummins 5.9l rwd. Before that I had an 03 ram 1500 4.7l v8 rwd. Four 24"x30" patio stones for winter weight, Goodyear wrangler territory a/t tires, no problems. The ram 1500 was great truck, but the 2500 diesel is miles ahead, easily twice the mileage form the same 134l tank, and I can pull anything. 4x4 is great, but expensive and unnecessary. Oh, I live near Barrie and spend the bulk of the winter in muskoka area for work, my rwd sees alot of snowy cottage trail type roads.

Some say unnecessary... I say invaluable. At least you picked the right truck though. :D lol

The only way to get to this beautiful isolated campsite is 4x4. :D
