What happens to people like this?

Will any jail time be served? if it were up to me it'd be a year in jail for every fake bank account made. Will the government be lucky to get half of their money back?
It absolutely astounds me who in the right mind can make over 400 new bank accounts and think to themselves that this is ok? Or maybe they thought even if they do get caught the punishment will be worth the crime? My friend said this guy was already making 127k a year I guess that wasn't enough for him. The amount of fraud going on in this country is ruining it. How do you even get into that position to be able to get your hands in these pots? 10 million in commission to steer government consulting contracts..so how big were the actual contracts? 50 million? who knows.

Another friend told me he knows of a guy who has been in India the entire pandemic and has been collecting CERB payments while running his immigration business from India making a mint over there setting up papers and whatever else you need to get into the Canada temporarily and then stay for good. Oh...and he just came back to Canada to move into his new build million dollar house that cerb helped pay for.... the same scammer had his brother come here on false papers for permanent resident and my friend reported it to immigration and nothing was done about it or even followed up with a phone call. Same friend also reported shady real estate agents in brampton area doing all kinds of mortgage schemes and whatever else they do and all he got was an email back saying "thanks, this is a well known problem we are looking into it"

Non violent crime. Yawn.

Years ago when we had PST I pointed out to someone in the ministry where they were losing tons of collectible taxes but they bluntly said they weren't getting off their arses. All they did was send letters to sellers to confirm sale prices. If the seller ignored the letter the case died.

The above should have all their assets seized until proven guilty. If guilty they immediately go to a holding prison with a five year sentence that starts when they return the money.

Absolutely nothing of major consequence happens to those people. A slap on the wrist? Maybe.

jail time? Hell no

Get to keep proceeds of crime? Most likely as the govt won’t go chasing it

I need to learn to steal.

Well you work with the Gov don't you, that is Step 1. :ROFLMAO:

Both those people worked at decent Gov jobs, I don't understand how or why, what turned them to steal.

Anyhow apparently all their assets have been frozen so maybe the Gov can take back in some sort of way.

Bingo!

Different rule book for these people

LoL yes…yes I do work for govt.

As for why? Easy…greed. Nothing more than that. I’d like to make a few more million but I’m too dumb / scared to even know how.

Why is it greedy? If I’m getting paid X and a private company is willing to pay me X+20-30% for my labour I think I’d take it. Is it being greedy?

How many times have you switched jobs in the last year? We had threads where you yourself had requested and gone for higher salaries. I wouldn’t call that greedy.

I am switching jobs so I can have a livable salary :(

That's everyone's argument no matter what level they were operating at. The crook that the OP posted about saw all the government waste and wanted his family to get their cut. The person making 70K and watching house prices run away from them argues they needed 100+, the lawyer at 250 is cash flow crunched from the big house, muskoka cottage, boats, fancy leased cars etc. All of those examples are not that far from collapse, they are just operating at different levels when times are good.

I could use the same argument for me. An extra 20-30% salary would make my life much easier in terms of financial stability.

For instance, I went to BC to spend time away from my family for 2x my Toronto salary...is that greedy? smart? My buddy makes 300-400k/year and his wife tells me they're 'poor' LOL I almost fell off my chair laughing when they used that word. BUT...house for 800k, renovation for 400k, cars worth $1200-1500/month in leases. Golf memberships for 30-40k....etc, etc, etc, etc.

Anyway I don't want to derail the convo here. Fact is, everyone has a 'lifestyle' that they try and maintain / portray.

Salary goes up, lifestyle goes up

What!?

You already have a house, kids and whatnot. What do you need another 30% salary for 0_0?

Are they in the Liberal cabinet yet?

Basically, they hire Eddie Greenspan or the equivalent and get off.
Any minor non related players who didn't cash in big time, are thrown under the bus and become the "ringleaders", since they can't finance a defense.
